  • Great machine
Amazing log splitter, split 22 inch logs all day with this. I did run a string tied to the handle and the other end loops around the wing nut that you need to remember to loosen. That way I never forget, as it will mess up the machine otherwise. Not sure why there can't be a one way valve there but I'm not messing with it. Works wonderfully. Very helpful in the colder months, my husband broke his lower back in a motorcycle accident a year ago so this obviously makes things 100 times easier. ... show more

  • Impressive, especially for the money
The nice thing about electric splitters - they start every time! I was a bit reluctant to make the move to an electric splitter because I was afraid that those in the 5 - 6 ton ($350 - $600) range would not be strong enough for our needs. Turns out I need not have worried. While this (and its ilk, I'm sure) would have a challenging time with gnarly oak or elm, it sure will split pretty good size (up to 10 - 12" if you are careful in positioning the log) maple, apple. and ash. Six to eight inch logs have been absolutely no problem. There are several brands with a basic configuration that seems to be identical to the Boss. Companies differ in the details. The Boss was well reviewed on several websites as being "rugged" and "well made", and having worked with it for a few weeks now, it certainly lives up to those reviews. In sum, I'm very satisfied with this purchase, and it worked right out of the box. Complaints: 1) Wheels are too close together and diameter is too small. This makes moving the machine something of a chore unless the ground is firm and flat. 2) It would be nice to be about a foot taller. Right now it is pretty hard on one's back after a bit of splitting. I'll be making a stand before we take on the next pile of bucked up logs. 3) The arc of the hydraulic lever is pretty wide; a shorter throw would be more convenient (and faster). ... show more

  • Really good splitter.
Annoyingly loud, but definitely does the job. Strong and very easy to operate. Unit is heavy and unsteady to pull on uneven ground. I like the one hand operation. Overall a very solid unit.

  • I CAN say that it is very easy to use and has enough power to do most ...
I can't speak to the durability of this product as I have only used it two days and split one load of wood. I CAN say that it is very easy to use and has enough power to do most of what you want to do. Like many others I spent a few days looking at different splitters and watching Youtube before I made a purchase. I already own a 22 ton gas splitter and probably burn 2-3 cords of wood per year. I burn hickory and oak mostly but also the occasional black walnut and pecan. I did NOT buy this to replace my gas splitter but a supplemental piece to see how it would work. I split one truckload of pin oak yesterday afternoon and today. This was a HUGE limb, 3 truckloads out of one limb, so you can imagine how big the tree is. It ranged from almost 24" across down to the smaller limbs. The limb fell in April, in Alabama, and was cut up and left on the ground in early November so it is what I would call "semi-seasoned". Most of the bark stayed on when splitting and there was very little rot. Lengths ranged from 12" up to 24" and I had several pieces that were 20" which is about the maximum size. I unpacked the box and read the instructions, for what that was worth, and had it running in about 5 minutes. I sat the splitter on the tailgate of the truck and used a 25 foot heavy extension cord under my shop awning. As you can imagine, the splitter had trouble with very knotty pieces but no more than expected. It bogged down several times because of knots but every piece that caused it problems would have been difficult to split with a maul. I split a lot with a maul for the exercise so I know the limitations. Straight pieces without knots that were less than 12-14" in diameter split extremely easily, as they would with a maul, and this was my main objective. I cut as much as I could into very small kindling which is difficult to do with a maul. It took me about 3 hours to split the truckload and that was with all the experimenting I was doing. Large logs needed to be split around the edges, again like a maul, but the splitter worked just fine even with the 20" diameter pieces. The only real negative I can say after two days is that the Ram is too small. Pieces that are not cut straight can tend to pop off the rail which can be dangerous if you aren't ready for it. I easily solved this by using a piece of 4x4 but may try to rig up something permanent. The ram could be 2" taller and it would be much safer. I wanted this to be able to split kindling and as a backup for when the gas engine decides not to start. I will try to use this with a power inverter in the next month so that I can take it back into the woods and run it with my truck running. I can easily pick it up and move it around but it does weigh a little over 100 pounds so many people may need help lifting it. For just rolling it along on concrete (the wheels are very close together) I imagine most people could handle it easily. ... show more

  • Great customer service from a USA company.
Well packaged, fully assembled. There was one small problem when I received it, the strain relief on the power cord was broken. I called the mfg, Boss Industrial, and got a typical push 1 for this 2 for that. I left a message thinking here we go again. Six (6) minutes later my call was returned. Rather than return the splitter they agreed to send me the part so I could fix it without effecting the warrenty. After using it for a couple of hours to split Almond, a very hard wood, the ram wouldn't retract fully. It was stopping approx. 6 inched short. After a couple of calls it was agreed that I could dissassemble the hydraulic selector valve for troubleshooting. I found a very small metal shaving that was blocking the return port. Throughout this whole process the company rep always returned my calls within a few minutes and although they wanted me to return the unit agreed to let me do the troubleshooting and would have sent me any parts if needed. The splitter work better than expected, is well built and rugged. ... show more
