  • Excellent pump for the price. Easy to install and very quiet Excellent pump for the price. Easy to install and very quiet
Size: 2.2 HP
My brand name single speed pool pump failed for a second time. In the last 15 years I had to replace it twice and pay a pool company to install it. This time I decided to get the Black + Decker 2 HP variable speed pump based on the reviews, and I installed it myself. I was a little hesitant to install it but reading the reviews and watching some online videos I gave it a try. To my surprise it was easier than I expected. I spent more time redoing the PVC connections since I have very little room to install it between my pool water heater, the filter, the inlet valves and all the plumbing. Once I completed the installation, I turn it on, and it completed priming fairly quick, faster than my previous 2.2 HP brand name pump. Also, it was noticeable less noisy when running at full speed, 3,450 rpm when compared to my previous two single speed pumps. Then I tried the four different preset speeds and it is super quiet, I can even tell is running when I am by the pool, about 15 feet away from the pump. I am running the factory preset default schedule and I will try it for a week or two to see the results and I will be tracking my power consumption. I read you can reduce the power consumption up to 80% when compared to a single speed pump. I will be extremely surprised if that is the case. I will be very happy to see a 40 to 50% less power consumption to keep my 16,000 gallon swimming pool clean. I will report back when I get actual power consumption readings after a couple of weeks. In summary this pump is great, and I hope will last longer than my previous brand name pumps that would cost me about 50% more for a single speed, and almost double for a variable speed compared to the Black + Decker. ... show more

  • sips energy from the wall and easy install
Size: 2.2 HP
The BLACK+DECKER Variable Speed Pool Pump Inground with Filter Basket, 2 HP, offers remarkable energy savings through its variable speed feature. This feature tailors the pump's speed to your pool's requirements, leading to substantial electricity savings compared to traditional pumps. Its 2 HP power suits most inground pools well, ensuring efficient water circulation and chemical distribution. The pump's durability is crucial, and although specifics are unavailable, look for corrosion-resistant materials in its construction. The included filter basket reduces strain on the pump and extends its life. Installation is straightforward, and after watching a YouTube video, programming the pump becomes quick and hassle-free. This pump operates quietly due to its variable speed nature, making it suitable for noise-sensitive environments. A user-friendly interface enables easy speed adjustments, timer scheduling, and power consumption monitoring. Checking for compliance with safety and efficiency standards is recommended before purchasing. In conclusion, the BLACK+DECKER Variable Speed Pool Pump offers energy efficiency, easy installation, and quiet operation. Its variable speed capability, coupled with user-friendly controls, contributes to its overall appeal. ... show more

  • Very surprised such a cheap pump be so good
Size: 2.2 HP
In 7 years I have gone through 3 Haywood pool pumps so I thought I would try this. I was very cautious as it was so cheap. I got the 2 HP model. It has variable speeds from 800 RPM to 3450 RPM. There are 4 programmable speed buttons (you choose what speed each button does). The one negative review that said you have to manually change speeds never read the manual and is false. You program the start time and the pump comes on at whatever speed you have programmed for speed 1. You define how long you want it to run at speed 1 before going to speed 2, then 3 and 4 etc. If you just want it to always run at 2,000 you program speed 1 to 2000 for your chosen duration, set speed 2,3 and 4 for a duration of zero and it runs at only one speed. You can then manually set 2,3,4 to different speed if you want then for occasional higher or lower speeds. I set mine to be 3,450 for 30 mins, 3,000 for 1 hr 30 mins and then 2,000 for 6 hours and speed 4 for 0 hours. This runs fast to prime the pump, does a full turn of the pool in the 2 hours then is in slow turnover for the rest of the day. I love this control for the price. The pump is so quiet compared to my last pump, at 2,000 I had to go over to check it was actually on. Installation is easy. Mine became more complicated because changing the Haywood pumps 3 times mean there were so many couplings on the piping (jut and re joined) I couldn't add more so I had to re plumb the the whole area, but if you can take out your old pump and add the new pump in it's place the connections are in the same spot as the Haywood If I have any issue, I'll update the review, but so far so good. ... show more

  • Works great, super quiet
Size: 2.2 HP
I was pleasantly surprised. My pool guy wanted to spend about 50% more on the well-known brand with the California name I'm sure you all know, but I insisted on Black and Decker since I've always been pleased with their products. I wasn't disappointed and neither was he. It went in easy and he programmed it to just run all the time at various speeds. I only ran my old pump for 8 hours a day since I have a surface skimming robot, but my electric bill has actually dropped since I installed this unit. I only wish I had Sense to give you accurate numbers on power draw, but that's not even the best part. I used to have to turn off the pump when we sat by the pool. It was so loud my dogs thought someone was opening the garage door when it came on. But they don't even hear this one at all, and we've been having great weather in Florida this winter, so spending lots of time by the pool (not in it) and I can't hear it at all. Even on high RPMs it is barely noticeable, and you really have to be listening for it. One thing I did notice is that my pump is in the sunlight and even here in Winter, the sticker on the top is starting to look old and it's only been a few weeks. I guess I'll have to install a cover for my pump area to extend its life, but so far so good. I also noticed some price differences, so be sure you are comparing apples to apples when shopping for yours. I seem to have paid a bit more than other people. ... show more

  • The digital drive quits working if you have a power outage and only lasts two years The digital drive quits working if you have a power outage and only lasts two years
Size: 2.2 HP
I liked this pump. I really did. But when my power went out during hurricane Ian, it was out for a week. When my power came back, my pump did not. It wouldn't start and gave at least three different error codes. I contacted support and they have been indeterminate as to warranty coverage, saying I would have to ship the pump to New York for testing to determine what is wrong. Really? No local repair facilities in the United States? Black & Decker? Really? I looked at the pump's website and they show a replacement drive for a about $700. Wow. Therefore, no way I can recommend this pump and motor to anyone. With no overload or current fluctuation circuitry protection in this digital drive, the TEFC motor is useless. There was no warning that this expensive pump would be rendered completely useless if you lose power. I have a Century TEFC motor that has gone through numerous power outages and still runs like new. You would think Black & Decker could sell you a replacement circuit board for a reasonable price or provide a local repair facility. So the 5-year warranty is useless, folks. The pump sure looks nice though. UPDATE 5.1.2024: Regarding my original review, I was finally able to get B&D to fix this pump by shipping it back to New York. So 4 stars, even though no local aupport. In the meantime, they were very nice about it and didn't charge me. While I waited for them to fix it, I had installed my old Hayward Superpump back on there after replacing some parts in the pump. Ran the Superpump until it started leaking, so put the rebuilt B&D pump on and now, after less than a year, it just quit and will no longer start. I removed it and carried it to my workbench. I heard something rattling around in the controller box. So I removed the top cover and wow, it didn't take Sherlock Holmes to figure out what had occurred. When they repaired the pump the first time, somebody left a loose screw to roll around on top of the circuit board until one day, yesterday, it vibrated to a position where it shorted out something critical on the circuit board. I've emailed their customer service to see what, if anything, they can do. Maybe send me a new circuit board? That would be ok. The pump was running fine, quietly, pumping well, etc. So maybe it is a good pump after all, but we'll see if they step up. I really like this pump, but it's nearly as expensive as the "big boys" and so let's see what happens. ... show more

  • Wow!! Very Impressed.
Size: 2.2 HP
I purchased this pump in an emergency after my 20+ year-old Hayward single speed pump failed while opening the pool this year (I live in Colorado). I found this pump on Amazon, and was at first very hesitant because of the "Black and Decker" name, but based on the reviews decided to to purchase. Pump was in stock and arrived in 2 days. Very easy to install if you have basic PVC cutting and gluing skills, you'll be fine. If you are replacing a Hayward pump, the height of the inlet is exact, however, I found that Hayward threads do not match, so I did have to replace the thread coupler with the couplers provided with the pump. Wiring was very simple. The only wiring issue I had was that I had to change out the wiring harness coupler from 1" to 3/4" (reducer found at Home Depot). After installation, this thing fired up and self primed very quickly and has been amazing. The amount of water this thing moves at 3000 rpm is amazing and it's very easy to program your own programs or you can use the pre-programed settings. I had to re-program a couple of settings only because my heater will shut off at the lowest setting (1000 rpm), so I had to kick that low setting up a bit to keep the heater running. Very easy to do. I have a 50,000 gallon pool and the 2 HP pump is perfectly adequate. The pump sits roughly 30' from the pool and the suction at the skimmers is amazing. Also, I have a large sand filter and it runs the filter at 20 psi at 3000 rpm. I am going to purchase the 3 hp (same dimensions as the 2 hp) and install for the main filtration and move this 2 HP over to my water features (fountains, slide and deck jets). Great purchase, very, very happy. ... show more

  • DO NOT BUY!
Size: 2.2 HP
FINAL UPDATE: My solution to all of the below was to install a wifi switch in line with the power supply. Specifically, I used this switch: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FPCJ1L4?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1. After water-proofing the switch, wiring it in, and connecting it to my wifi, I then programmed the switch to cycle the power every morning, with a 5 minute delay between OFF and ON. This has fixed the problem of the pump electronics freezing up every five-or-so days. I know it's a total hack, but I now have a reliable pump. I also picked up some new functionality. I can now operate the pump from my phone as a single-speed pump. I can also write a routine that turns the pump ON when the temp falls below a certain level, and back OFF when the temp increases. I know the pump has built-in freeze protection, but it turns on when the temp falls below 40F, which is way too high. Also, I suspect that my activating the freeze protection on the pump is what caused all the other issues I experienced, i.e. caused the pump electronics to randomly start freezing up. I am still leaving the 1-star rating, because you shouldn't have to hack a brand-new pump in order to make it work, but at least I am content now. The short of it, only buy this pump if you're willing/able to do some additional hacking after install. UPDATE 2: This is my fourth review for this pump. I started at 5 stars, dropped it to 3 stars, then 2, and now I am at 1 star. The short of it is this pump IS NOT RELIABALE! As others have stated (read the other 1-star reviews), the pump frequently becomes unresponsive and quits working. In my previous reviews I expressed concern about the pump electronics freezing up while I am on travel. Well, I just got back from a two-week, summer vacation, and my pool was a green swamp. Sure enough, the pump electronics froze up while I was out of town. Had this happened during the winter months, I could have potentially experienced thousands of dollars in freeze damage. Although the pump is powerful, and it is quiet, it IS NOT RELIABLE. The pump is worthless to me, if I can't count on it to run when I tell it to. I am going to try the whole customer service/warranty route, but given what I have read (again, 1-star reviews), that is likely going to be a waste of my time. Now, not only am I out $1,000 for an unreliable/worthless pump, I have to spend $2,500 for one that actually does work! I REGRET PURCHASING THIS PUMP. UPDATE 1: There have been two times, within the last week, that I have walked out and noticed the pump running at very low speed (1000 rpm). None of the 4 speeds I have programmed are at 1000 rpm. I have no idea why it's doing this, and then when I shut it off and restart the program schedule, it doesn't run the schedule, I looked in the manual for instructions on how to do a factory reset, but I can't find any. I am beginning to suspect my pump is defective. I am really not looking forward to going through the whole warranty process. The pump has only been installed for 6 weeks! Now, I am starting to regret my purchase. RE-WRITE: Although I do not regret purchasing and installing this pump, I am not nearly as happy with it as I was originally. I have two main issues with the pump. One, it cannot be controlled via RS485, which means I have to either rely on a programmed schedule, or I have to walk over to the pump and manually turn it on each time. Two, the scheduling doesn't always work. The pump frequently ends up in an unresponsive state, which requires its power to be cycled via the electrical panel. I still haven't figured out what exactly causes it to become unresponsive, but power outages appear to be *one* of the reasons. I am now worried that the pump will become unresponsive during a freeze, while I am out of town. If this happens, the cost of the damage caused by freezing pipes will far outweigh the money I saved going with this pump. Fortunately, I don't have any plans to travel this upcoming winter, so I will be able to babysit it during its first encounter with freezing temperatures. If it does fine, then maybe I will feel better about it again, but for now, I remain concerned about its reliability. ORIG: My original, 5-star review was rejected by Amazon because I included an off-site link. I had a lot of nice things to say on the day I installed it. Little did I know ... ... show more
