  • A Game-Changer for My Pool: BLACK+DECKER Variable Speed Pump Delivers on Efficiency and Value!
Size: 1.5 HP
A Game-Changer for My Pool: BLACK+DECKER Variable Speed Pump Delivers on Efficiency and Value! As a long-time pool owner and dedicated smart home enthusiast, I'm always seeking ways to optimize efficiency and reduce energy consumption. So, when my trusty (but ancient) 24-year-old Hayward 1.5 HP single-speed pump finally gave up the ghost (cracked basket housing and an insatiable appetite for electricity), I knew it was time for an upgrade. After a month of intensive research, the answer was clear: a variable speed pump was the only way to go. My whole-house energy monitoring system had been screaming at me for years about the Hayward. On some days, that single pump was responsible for a staggering half of my total energy bill. The promise of a variable speed pump – saving half, if not more, on energy costs – was incredibly appealing, especially living on an island where electricity isn't cheap. Add to that the significant hurdle of shipping costs and a whopping 45% duty plus additional taxes for any imported pump, and the "right price point" became a critical factor. Local pool companies offered little in the way of variable speed options, and what they did offer came with eye-watering price tags. Enter the BLACK+DECKER Variable Speed Pool Pump In-Ground with Filter Basket and Easy-Programmable Touch Pad Interface, 1.5 HP. This pump arrived at precisely the right price for my situation. I was immediately impressed with the thoughtful design. It came with both 1.5" and 2" tailpieces, and the 1.5" was a perfect match for my existing plumbing. Even better, the base plate was a pleasant surprise – it eliminated the need for any modifications to my existing connections, making for a truly seamless fit. The only installation change required was to accommodate the voltage difference: my old Hayward was 110V, and the B+D is a 230V unit. Another unexpected bonus was the weight; the B+D unit is noticeably lighter than its ancient predecessor. I've had the pump installed for about a week now, and the setup and programming were remarkably straightforward. The manual was easy to follow, and I had it up and running in no time. The difference in operation is astounding. This pump is incredibly quiet, a stark contrast to the old Hayward's roar. But the real star of the show is its efficiency. Even running at 3,000 RPM, I'm seeing an estimated 60% to 70% reduction in energy consumption. At lower RPMs, the energy savings are even more significant. I'm currently running on the factory program, which is performing beautifully, keeping my pool sparkling clean. For now, I am extremely pleased with this purchase. The BLACK+DECKER Variable Speed Pool Pump has delivered on its promises of energy efficiency and ease of installation, all while fitting within my budget constraints. I can confidently recommend this unit to anyone looking for a reliable, efficient, and cost-effective pool pump solution. ... show more

  • Nice VFD B&D Pump for inground pool Nice VFD B&D Pump for inground pool
Size: 1.5 HP
I am impressed with the installation, quietness, programmability and overall value. You do need to understand proper pump requirements as far as minimum pipe lengths upstream and downstream of pump connections, and if piping it up, skills on PVC priming and gluing to avoid leaks. My pump replaced the original 1.5Hp single speed pump that just sucked power. This one can be programmed at (4) different speeds 24hr/day, and I discovered I didn’t even need to run it faster than 3000rpm for those short high flow periods you may want. 2500rpm actually matches the same flow as previous pump so hoping for good $ savings. I also would prefer NOT to winterize and utilize the previous temp sensor to operate the pump when ambient temp is 38degF or lower and there is another review that states he talked to tech support and there is a similar feature, however I haven’t gotten to that point since it’s not even Spring yet. At worst I could set it to run 1000-1500rpm when I know it one cold 🤞🏻 Really proud of this install!! ... show more

  • Quieter, more efficient
Size: 1.5 HP
I have the 1.5HP version and, after several weeks, it is working like a charm. The main reason I spent more on the Black and Decker version over the Blue Torrent version was the 5 year warranty. More specifically, I looked up the people behind this B&D branded version, who check out as pool guys who actually know something about pool pumps, and I believe they will be around long enough to honor the warranty, if needed. The flexibility of the programming, once you figure out how to do it, is for most people more than you need. I only set 3 of the 4 speed options. The motor is quieter than my previous pump (I used to hear a humming inside my house, now I hear nothing). I greatly appreciate the 2 sets of pipe connectors. Adding up the wattage use as indicated on the pump settings screen, this thing seems to be using half the energy my previous 2 speed variable pump used. I've been tracking energy use and even though it is hard to accurately measure usage change, I can definitely say it is not using more. One suggestion I have to improve this product concerns the wiring housing. The hole for the NPT cord connector is too close to the back of the box to use a lock nut, which is an option I wish I had. I have a whole box of nylon cord connectors that I could not make work. The only option is to thread the connector to the housing, but I could not find a thread that fit. I dug up a metal connector, but the thread on that, even though the right diameter, would not thread properly. I ended up jerry rigging a combination of the metal and nylon connectors (it is secure and water resistant). I do not know if it was the connectors or the box, but the threads did not match. If the hole was moved maybe a half inch from the back, though, I could have accomplished a secure connection using a lock nut. Maybe in the future a wire connector can be provided? Besides that, another improvement would be better instructions. Luckily, there are a lot of video reviews of this product and I was able to set it up watching them. I will follow up if needed. ... show more

  • Well made pump and motor, with some exceptions
Size: 1.5 HP
I ordered the Black and Decker 1.5 HP pool pump in April and installed everything in May. The motor works fine, with very low noise levels. The variable speed controls work great so far and are easy to program. Hookup to my existing plumbing was fairly straightfoward. However, my filter basket developed air bubbles while on a lower speed setting and that kept growing throughout the day. I checked every connection, replaced some O rings and used silicon grease on them. Didn't stop the air bubbles, but I was able to trace the source to the plastic lid on the filter basket. Adding some silicone grease to that O ring helped some, but did not stop the bubbles entirely. But, when I put some of the silicone grease on top, where the clear plastic meets the orange handle ring, the bubbles stopped. Either it's a bad O ring, or something is wrong with the plastic lid itself. I'm trying to contact Pool Parts to Go about this. Also, the cover on the variable speed settings broke off after only 2 months use. We were very careful and gentle in closing and opening it, but a tiny plastic piece broke on the hinge. Able to fix that with some heavy duty Flex tape as a new hinge. UPDATE: Pool Parts to Go got back to me on the same day I contacted them about the air bubble problem. They are sending a new O ring for the filter basket. Hopefully, that solves everything and I won't need a new filter basket lid. Good service. The O ring was the culprit and the new one works fine. 2nd UPDATE: After running the B&D 1.5 HP pump for a full season, we are still very pleased with it's power, quietness, and various speed programming ability. It definitely saves on electric use over our old 2 speed Hayward pump. ... show more

  • LOVE this pump!!
Size: 1.5 HP
I’m a HVAC guy so I’m familiar with pumps and motors. My single speed was costing way too much to operate so I shopped around for a variable speed pump. For a fraction of the price compared to the big names I’m completely thrilled with my purchase. It’s extremely quiet! Has time settings and very easy to program. It’s self priming and doesn’t use near the power my single speed did. At 2000 rpm it’s pulling a whopping 328 watts, 1.6 amps. My old pump was pulling 13 amps! I have the 1.5HP 240v version. Took me all but 30 mins to swap out, plumbing hook ups were easy. I recommend this pump to all my pool friends, some have purchased and happy with it. Going on 3 months with it running 24/7 and I’m very pleased. ... show more

  • HOW WILL IT BE IN A FEW YEARS.... UMM IT WON'T. :)
Size: 1.5 HP
Works wonderful in the beginning. However, as others have noted this brand appears to have a known faulty shaft seal that leaks water into the motor before you even realize it... leaving the unit to be a huge electrical shock hazard. Eek!! Black and Decker, as well as the subsidiary Pool Parts To Go, are aware of this and say that's just how things go sometimes. It appears that unless you take this ENTIRE PUMP system apart every month to inspect it peice by peice, with a magnifying glass, neither will honor the warranty. Consider this a disposable item after the Amazon return window closes. No proprietary parts are available locally for anything on the fly.. which was always an issue as we did preventative maintenance. (Nothing at Leslie's, Pinch a Penny, Lowes, Ace, or HD will fit this.) If you actually needed something for it quick... your pool would likely be green by time it arrived from the black and decker store I'd imagine. Unfortunately I learned a hard lesson about this company when I sought assistance, despite having professional pool care weekly. I should have thought more long term than saving a few dollars on the front end... but all I saw was the 5 year warranty. As you know it's going to be a huge pain to pull it all out now, so do yourself a favor and get something big name you can plug and play in the future. Cody the Pool Expert was fast to deny the companies responsibility for the internal failure, which he did in about a 12 hour turn around time, so Ill give them credit for that speed I suppose. :) I just want future consumers to pause and think twice about what you are about to spend a decent bit of money on... and before you know it... replacement money on. ... show more

  • Great quality, great price
Size: 1.5 HP
Working like a charm 1.5 years later. Reliable & quiet, the two things I wanted most out of it. Does not disappoint! I've been very impressed with Black and Decker stuff for the last decade. I have multiple power tools which have been workhorses. I realize the pump is a rebrand, but it seems they do care about their reputation because the stuff they release is quality, and we benefit with their great prices. I've been running it non-stop at 1000RPM, summer/winter etc. It barely registers as a blip on our usage at that speed. ... show more

  • Love it so far!
Size: 1.5 HP
My 8 year old Pentair Intelliflo that cost $1200 in 2015 went out. The replacement model was $1859 and new the one was already discontinued for a more expensive one. I started looking at different brands and the B&D kept popping up. At first I thought it was too cheap and wouldn't be the same quality, but after watching a couple YouTube videos I decided to go for it. Two things jumped out at me watching the videos; 1. I didn't need the 3hp a 1 1\2hp would be plenty and 2. They made the B&D practically the same size as Pentair and Hayward for easy replacement. It was a perfect height match for my Pentair and just about a 1/4" shorter from center of outflow to front of inflow, luckily I was able to slide my sand filter a 1/4" and then it was perfect. The wiring was a cinch just 3 wires in the box and the ground to earth wire. I have seen some people say you can't fit a 90 deg flex fitting on but I had no problem and if it was I would have simply taken the fan cover off. Pros over the Pentair: 1.Quieter than even the quiet VS Pentair 2. Simpler scheduling set up 3. Warranty 5 year B&D vs. 3 month Pentair 4. Shows the watts used at every rpm so you you know exactly what it costs you to run the pump 5.Comes with 2" or 1 1/2" pipe fittings ( I didn't use either as it was a perfect match to my Pentair I literally just screwed old ones off then screwed them on to new pump 6. I saved $1000!! Con 1. The orange and black color scheme ( it's a reach but I really haven't seen a con yet) I will update my post if warranted but so far it kicks the other brands butt ... show more
