If you no longer want to swing an axe this is a great transition. If you need to split a lot of wood quickly I would recommend moving up to a motorized splitter.

If you are unable to swing an axe, then this would be a great option to split any logs you have that are less than 8 inches in diameter. First and foremost, this splitter is not light weighing in around 80lbs. Wheels are affixed to the ram side of the unit which will make maneuvering this on a hard surface fairly easy, however when you are on softer ground, they tend to just sink into the surface making moving rather difficult so keep that in mind. I do not fault this unit for that as that is just physics. A benefit for softer ground is the unit moved less than it does on a more solid surface while being used. No for the splitting aspects. The two arms work at different rates which allow you to make contact to the log quicker and then switch over to the other arm to give you more leverage / power to start the actually splitting. As you split the log, you might have to add a spacer to fully split smaller logs. a section of a 4x4 is a great option. No when you release the pressure for the rod to back off, you can quickly stop the release to prevent the rod from fully going back in to save you some pumps for the next log you will split. Do not think for one second that this will make splitting wood effortless as the pumping does take some effort. I wish this would split larger rounds but for the price it is a great value, and I would suggest something like this or upgrade to a gas-powered splitter if you want to be able to cut larger logs and or want splitting to be easier. ... show more

Worked perfectly right out of the box. Quick and easy to use. Handles store conveniently along beam. And the splitter stores great vertically along the wall taking up very little space. The media could not be loaded. This log splitter is pretty cool. It is powerful and compact and fairly easy to move around with the two little wheels. Mine seems to have a leak on the easy pull handle side and also when using the easy pull handle side when it comes to a load it seem to back off half way or most all the way when you crank the lever. Maybe something is wrong with the check valve on that side or something. Also when you hit a heavy load you need to put your foot on it so you don't lift the whole unit in the air. If I did not have an issue with the easy pull handle I'd rate it 5 out of 5 but now I'm worried about how robust the pumps are. ... show more

I ordered this because I have quite a few logs I needed to split. Nothing huge, just a bunch of oak branches that were about 4-6 inches in diameter. This product ended up being much larger than I had expected. Yes, the dimensions are accurate in the description, but in my mind it just wasn't that big for some reason. Either way, i was able to split my logs as needed; but this thing can split way bigger logs than what i had. I'll surely be lending it to some neighbors that need some large trees removed; but as for me, my trees are just fine, other than regular annual pruning. ... show more
