  • Beautiful Pergola
Color: Light Brown Size: 12ft x 12 ft
Materials were easy to work with. Was able to assemble by myself but recommend some help if available. Beautiful color and instructions were easy to follow. Quality materials as well and size was just right. No missing parts.

  • Great purchase!
Color: Light Brown Size: 16 ft x 12 ft
Beautiful! We did hire someone to put this together. He said it was very self explanatory. Just takes a little time. We are so happy with this purchase.

  • Good company, good products
Color: Medium Brown Size: 14 ft x 10 ft
I'm a big fan of Backyard Discovery products, having bought two so far. (A Saxony gazebo being the other.) Product-wise I have no complaints, but delivery-wise I was furious because not only was there no ability to choose a delivery date, but even after being instructed on what to do by Amazon, after I contacted the shipping company like Amazon said to, I still wasn't able to set a delivery date. Before I realized what was happening, a giant delivery truck and two giant boxes of lumber appeared at the front of my house - no phone call, no email, no text message, no notification beforehand. In fact it was lucky that I was even home at all, because I wasn't supposed to be. Not happy about that, but the driver was extremely cool and actually helped get it to my back yard, which he didn't have to do. Like the gazebo kit I bought first, (I had no delivery problems with that one and was able to schedule a delivery date/window for it), this pergola went together much the same and was made relatively easy with the BILT app for instructions. Like the gazebo, the lumber in this kit is untreated and it absolutely needs to be sealed before assembly to make it resilient to rain, sun, and the general outdoors. I'm a giant fan of Seal-Once Nano-Poly and STRONGLY recommend using it to treat this lumber first. I used the "Light Brown" color, results are in photos. As for assembly, these kits are definitely a process - Day one was spent gathering tools, work tables, equipment, and setting up the back yard to accommodate all the pieces of the kit. Step one with any of these kits to unbox it all and inspect the wood from damage or warped boards, then dealing with the company to send out needed pieces. I didn't have any damage and everything looked straight enough to work with, (not everything was perfect, but hey.... it's lumber), and my 14 year old son and I went to work unboxing and staging all the pieces in the back yard in like-sized piles. Day two was spent sealing the pieces a few at a time on a set of sawhorses and a portable work table. Since Seal-Once dries quickly in the Las Vegas air, we were able to stain/seal about four pieces each and then transfer them over to a makeshift drying rack on the concrete slab. (A tarp laid out on the floor and some 2x4s creating the "rack".) Once the pieces were drying, we then got all the hardware staged and ready to be used. We let the Seal-Once cure overnight. Day three we assembled it, with all of it going together and fitting with the same ease as my other gazebo. Again, the BILT app helped tremendously. This kit has quite a few pieces to it, so it took us most of the day. Ensuring that things are aligned correctly and bolts are going in in the right orientation is time-consuming, and all the slats across the roof also take time to get affixed in place. Once it was all assembled and inspections were made, we made some additions, which is what make these kits great - they loan themselves great to customizations. For us, because I needed far more shade than a pergola provides, I added more of a roof with the trellises you can purchase from big-box hardware stores, colored to match. I also added one on the side of the pergola to shield the afternoon sun that reaches there. Besides providing shade that actually breathes instead of making the pergola an oven with solid metal roofing, the trellises make for great platforms to grow vines up and over the roof. Then we added 120v wiring and outlets where needed, powering misting fans, hanging lights, and a television. (That was a lot of work unto itself... not worth going into here.) Finally, an outdoor TV enclosure was constructed and hung on one end, giving the whole thing a rather "enclosed" feel to the pergola. Eventually when some hanging plants and some vines get put in place and grow into it, it'll be a comfortable little nook in the corner of the yard. ... show more

  • Double check measurements!
Color: Medium Brown Size: 10 ft x 10 ft
This is on me. I thought 10x10 would be the measurement of the footprint created by the four vertical posts but it is not. That measurement takes into account the overhang of the trellis on top. The footprint, as clearly indicated on one slide, is much smaller, by multiple feet. My error. That is okay but different than I expected. Just hoping to help someone else to not make my same mistake. It went up within three hours, done by three professional assemblers. Beautiful design. Very solid. Fixed to existing concrete pad fairly easily. You can see by photos that with mid afternoon sun in SoCal, it provides probably about 40-50% shade. In evening when we will probably be sitting out there, the shade will be considerably increased. The cedar material is solid and we didn’t notice any significant warping. The third party transport company delivered it without a knock on the door and we didn’t realize it was here until we went out and discovered it was there, in the driveway, on wooden pallets. I thought they would need a signature? Not placed in most convenient place but okay. We would have asked for it to be moved closer to garage, maybe 3 feet closer, so we could park a vehicle behind it for security purposes. I will say assembly cost was close to cost of pergola itself but that is probably due to supply and demand in Southern California. If you are handy, strong and have friends to help, you may be able to save on that. Overall, would buy again. Four stars instead of five only because of the fact we don’t know how it will hold up to weather and wind so we reserve the fifth star until we see. In a year, we can upgrade if it passes. ... show more

  • Well worth the money!
Color: Light Brown Size: 20 ft x 12 ft
This pergola kit is well worth the money and easy to put together. It is definitely a project that you need some time and patience because there are very detailed instructions and you need to read and follow them to the letter. The kit came in three very heavy boxes so be prepared to have help moving from the drop off point to your installation area. The pieces are not heavy individually but as you put them together they get heavier and you need at least one extra set of hands. My husband and I had a total of 24 hours in labor putting it together. We did it after work in the evenings and did not have any problems. The holes were all drilled exactly in alignment and we only had one small board on top that had a little natural warp but we hid it by placement. No other issues. The bolts are all shiny black and very nice looking. Compliments the light wood nicely. We had a contractor give us an estimate for the same size pergola and it was 15k. This kit was 2500.00 for the 10x20. No regrets and we have gotten so many compliments!! There is one comment in the reviews that I want to add to. Someone stated that the posts are not solid 6x6 posts. This is true, however, they are very sturdy and we have no concerns whatsoever. The week we put our pergola together was the week of the terrible straight wind storm in Tulsa Ok. Limbs were down all around us but this pergola never budged. If you are kit instruction savvy at all and enjoy completing your own projects this kit is for you! ... show more

  • Excellent Kit
Color: Light Brown Size: 16 ft x 12 ft
Just completed building this pergola. Customer service was fantastic, one of the posts was damaged in shipping and they sent a new one out in three days. The kit came together very well. There was only on hiccup that was no big deal. When installing the purlins, the end holes were right on, but the field holes were hit or miss. Some lined up with the frames below and some didn't. Very impressed with the quality of this kit. Someone complained about the hollow posts, but they're very well done and plenty strong enough. Besides it makes it easier to move around. The wood is very nice. I would buy again. Looking at one for the back yard. ... show more

  • Beautiful Pergola at an unbeatable price.
Color: Medium Brown Size: 14 ft x 10 ft
The wife wanted some extra shade on the back deck so I decided to purchase this pergola. It arrived as scheduled in two very heavy long boxes. Moving the boxes is definitely a two-man job, but Amazon only sent the driver. Lucky I was able to help him move the boxes or I'm not sure he could have moved them into my driveway by himself. My pergola arrived undamaged and came with all the required hardware. The wood is real cedar with that nice cedar smell and comes pre-stained. I decided to add a coat of waterproofing so I spent the first day just laying out and painting all the pieces. I used Seal-Once Nano-Poly Premium Wood Sealer which I also ordered from Amazon. It goes on easy, dries fast and cleans up with soap and water. The next day I started assembly of the separate sections. This can be done by one person, but is far easier with two. I would recommend that you have at least an intermediate skill level to assemble this on your own. The instructions are clear but you need to make sure you are assembling the right pieces in the correct orientation. After the 4 sides are assembled you will need at least 3 people to stand up the sides and bolt them together. Once that is done then 2 people are enough to finish the job. The entire assembly part (not including painting) took me 2 days. More people could probably do it in one. I mounted my pergola to a wooden deck. Securing the legs with the supplied mounts requires some careful measurements, but they work fine. I wanted a semi-transparent tarp on top and ordered a Windscreen4less 10x14 Sun Shade Sail on Amazon which fit nicely. I used eyebolts and zip ties to secure it. The wife also wanted a mosquito net so I measured carefully and ordered the Apex Garden 10X12 gazebo net on Amazon which fit perfectly. I secured it with white plastic-coated curtain wire which you can also purchase on Amazon. I am very happy with this pergola and for the price you will not beat the quality. You couldn't even get just the wood alone from HD for this price let alone the cutting and hardware. I know people who have had pergolas custom built for over $5K! This pergola is an excellent value! ... show more

  • wth?!! NOT worth "One Star" - took entire leisure away from such item
Color: Medium Brown Size: 14 ft x 10 ft
Paid for contractor service (via Amazon) to assemble - only to come home, to find pergola [VERY] crooked [photos] - just too late to do crap because I paid a lot (EXTRA) for cement to stabilize [because I reside in desert where wind speeds are often 25-60 mph]. Pergola was already assembled/in the ground, with poured concrete; however, the contractor (both deaf and only communicating me with pointing and using their cell phone's text/note feature to communicate). Also, I discovered few broken pieces (already assembled) & many beams not level/not secured. AND not even adjoining adjacent beams/posts. Pergola is beautiful - serves its purpose (car shade). Material is marketed as 'Chinese Cedar'. I ain't an expert, but this material fractures easily. Just hope it "holds up" - esp with high winds & frequent temps 90-118° AND that its set in forever, in concrete. Reckon I got what I deserve/signed-up for (??) buying something so large, so time-intensive, so complex, not having ability to physically inspect item, buying off the internet, and ETC, ETC.. I even received a berating email that the contractor had to assemble this item in excessive heat. 1st off: I didn't make anyone agree to perform anything, under any conditions, any date/time. And salt to wound: I even tipped these 2 contractors $80 -AND- bought each of them a full lunch (Panera Bread), in addition to water/drinks. They even knocked on my door, asking me if I had anything for them to drink. THEN.... (gets worse): the lengthy email from the contractor assembling this item went on & on how they had to make 2 trips to Home Depot for tools to assemble the item. The contractor went on & on about how he "went out of his way" to obtain items, to assemble this item. So, I'm confused how I (the consumer) am responsible for ensuring weather conditions are to their liking & that I am to have the necessary tools (specifically asked AND that I had to obtain/provide: wheel barrel, shovel, and cement). Paying someone to assemble this so I didn't have to spend any time doing this project, whatsoever & not deal with the aggravation to assemble this, YET, here I am.. doing exact opposite and then some, trying to resolve *this* ISSUE) - which BTW.. I see some reviewers on here were able to assemble this item in ~5 hrs. I'm impressed because 2 assembly guys (contractors arranged/paid via Amazon) spent from 8AM-7:30PM to do this project and ... I don't even trust these people and don't want them anywhere near my property - despite their having emailed me, called me (many times). I rather just burn this pergola during our next winter rather than deal with these people (contractors who "assembled" this item), than have to endure more stress and frustration with such incompetent, disrespectful, people. (and yes, I have email communication as proof the manner which I was treated and that I was the one responsible for their mishaps & being ill-prepared) ... show more
