This chicken coop door is a mixed bag. It opens and closes and it is safe for the chickens if the door should try to close on them. So that part is good. The solar and the built-in battery work and power the door no problem. The overall mechanical construction is good and the weatherproofing is good. Installation requires cutting a hole in whatever you plan to install the door into. So this will require tools such as a saber saw. It would be hard to do it with only hand tools but it could be done. The bad parts of the system are the remote which on the two units I have, has such as short range that you might as well push the close and open buttons manually. The light sensor kind of works to shut the door at night but seems to randomly open it during the night. So we usually have the door open even before dawn which seems dangerous for the chickens. Also the door shuts before it is really dark so the chickens are sometimes still outside the coop. Setting the 24-hour timer thing is a mystery. We tried many things and can't get it to take. It either doesn't work or opens at strange times or perhaps we never set it to timer mode. Hard to tell. There is just one blinky LED that is supposed to indicate everything about the system. We've resorted to just chasing the last chicken in and manually closing the door at night and opening it in the morning manually as well. So it basically is no different than a wooden door with a latch in actual usage. Minimal instructions in tiny tiny print. There are lots of these listed on Amazon but they are all exactly the same so buying a different brand is pretty futile. ... show more

Where to start, this is a great idea and a wonderful find as I do have chickens, and it is nice to not have to worry about shutting the chickens in at night or letting them out in the morning when going on mini vacations. This has a charge out of the box so you can see how it works and test it out. We then put it outside to test over 2 days and it opened and closed when the sun came out and closed as it got dark. However, where I am skeptical is I live in Michigan and the winters can get dark or have a cloudy day, so will the solar panel still operate. Additionally, it is a very thin plastic and I am not sure if it will last without breaking when it is -1 to -20 or if we have freezing rain. I am building a new coop and will use this, But I will also have an additional door as a fail safe next to it. Currently as is, I will recommend this product with a few notes of caution: 1. For those that live in colder climates make sure this is not the only door you have on your coop. 2. If a chicken gets caught in the door, it will be there until you release it - this does not go up if it hits something on the way up like a electric garage door; It firmly closes. ... show more

I received this item as part of the Vine program, but make it a point to give an unbiased review. This automatic door arrived well packaged. It is very easy to install if you have all the tools needed and are a bit handy. It does require 3 AA batteries, I used some rechargeables that I had handy. With this door installed I no longer have to open and close the door on my chicken coop. I actually added it on a side access door, as our coop door is in a caged in area that predators cannot get into, so now we don't have to open the big access door. It opens at dawn and closes at dusk. Now, a predator that is adamant to get in and is persistent may be able to get through this, but my chicken area has electric fencing around it so I do not foresee that being an issue in my specific coop area. ... show more

I've been raising chickens for a couple years now. I should have bought one of these sooner as I often forget to close the coop door at night. Fortunately, my run is very secure from predators. This auto door works great. The sensor is reliable and the action is quick and smooth. The hardest part of using it is 2 things. One - I am kind of in the woods so we get a lot of shade which can cause it shut earlier and open later than I would like, not a deal breaker though as the chickens can adjust to it. Two- My chickens weren't raised with this door so they often get locked out or are scared of it. I often find a few stragglers that get left out when I check before bed. I think this will get better as time goes on though. Overall, this is a good product that I expect to work for years to come. ... show more

Installed this door a week ago and now it won’t charge and will not close. $130 paperweight. Any warranty? Of course not. Amazon stand behind the purchase? Of course not. Avoid this piece of garbage.
