This latest Autel MD806 model replicates the base functions of the more expensive MD808 while also adding SAS, BMS, EPB, and DPF advanced operations. It’s versatility enables it to perform unique tasks that even my 21-function tablet scanner can’t perform. I am most impressed with the lean dynamics of the MD806 and its ability to accomplish sophisticated tasks with seamless accuracy and speed. Out of the box, this unit can carry out multiple test modes in highly organized, intuitive detail. Once plugged in, the scanner quickly pulls the vehicle’s ODBII protocols and spits out precise data that’s remarkably easy to decipher with the aid of a well-constructed user-friendly manual. Within each of its 4 systems, there are powerful analytical sub-menus ordinary scanners don’t possess. For instance, the BMS system contains a Battery Evaluation Status Mode that supports different levels of the vehicle’s battery status. Here, it’s possible to see the battery charge state, closed circuit current monitoring, and battery value percentages. Additionally, the scanner will display these various battery readings and store them for later review up to a 5-day period. It also has a Battery Registration Replacement capability that includes an Active Rest option which places the vehicle’s electronic control units into “sleep mode” when servicing and isolating electrical problems. Support for these and other advanced features within each of the separate menu systems is what makes the MD806 unique. Checkout the attached images for reference. A word of caution: Check with Autel’s customer service prior to purchasing to make sure all the special systems functions you need for your particular vehicle are available. Common OBII features are universal, so they will typically work with most modern vehicles using a standard ODB port. In terms of monetary value, the Autel MD806 is fairly-priced and outperforms most scanners in its category and above. It is a finely crafted midrange device with surprisingly broad proficiencies for its marketed range and class. And, with free lifetime updates included, all packaged options will remain accessible for the life of the equipment. During this lingering global pandemic, it is vital for “do-it-yourselfers”, like myself, to have diagnostic equipment on hand to analyze and service our own vehicles from the safety and comfort of our home garages. The MD806 is certainly a viable tool that can help reduce inconvenient and risky trips to the repair shop during these awkward times.

It does everything I expected and a bit more. Works with my 1996 Audi, my 2008 BMW, and a variety of Mazda, Ford, and Toyota vehicles. I think it counts as “two way” because it can tell the computer modules in the vehicle to do a few things. I was concerned that it might not work so well with the German vehicles, especially the older Audi, but was pleasantly surprised that it’s able to communicate with the main ECU, the airbags, the transmission, and the ABS. The UI isn’t perfect but it works. It gives complete and clear identification (manufacturer, model, software version and sub-version) of the computer module it is talking to. It at least currently doesn’t unlock frivolous features on my BMW like some of the BMW-specific software does, but it can interrogate the state of all the switches and sensors for really convenient fault-finding, and can reset service lights/intervals. I believe it can release electronic parking brakes, although I haven’t had to try that yet. I say “currently” because Autel does seem to release software/data upgrades for various models, downloadable (free so far) from their website once you have registered. It extracts and resets freeze-frame and other OBD II data (smog test readiness monitors) just fine, as you would expect from any modern diagnostic tool. I haven’t figured out if it is possible to simultaneously plot more than two live sensor values at a time, but two has been enough so far. (Eight values for a V8 would be convenient, for example.) A little more model-specific repair advice from the fault codes might be nice, but it’s only a tiny inconvenience to type the code into Google on my phone and get a ton of advice from all the forums. Comes with a decent blow-molded carrying case that should keep it stored safely. The device exterior seems rugged and sealed enough that the normal shop environment shouldn’t kill it. The screen is easier to scratch than I like, but maybe I can find an iPhone screen protector that fits. It’s not a touch screen. I would like a longer cable on the OBD plug, but I do have my own extension cable for those times when I want to work from the engine bay instead of the driver’s seat. All-in-all, this is a lot better value than any other scan tools I have purchased. It’s enabled me to find the exact problem with a complicated BMW (GM!) transmission (awd transfer case) and repair it for a few hundred $$$ instead of the dealer’s proposed $4,500 complete transmission replacement. It’s been very well worth the money for me.

I bought this tool on somewhat of a Whim, I recently learned about Auto Bleed for ABS Systems, I have a few vehicles but 2 in particular that I had previously done Manual Brake Bleeds on and the Pedal just never seemed to want to come up any, So I thought it was worth a shot at this Tool for the Auto Bleed function, I bled both my vehicles and the pedal is much improved, But I still think it could be better, In all fairness, the tool does prompt you to preform a Manual Bleed as part of the Auto Bleed, which I neglected to do, since I had previously did so, But someday when I have the time, I may play around and see if I can't improve my pedals even more so. Now for the 5 Star part, I have an Old 98 BMW Z3 that literally has been basically sitting for a year now because the Air Bag light came on, and in my State a vehicle won't pass inspection if the air Bag light is lit. I'm not sure if all BMW's have this, But this Z3 has both a Standard 16 pin OBD connector near the dash and a 20 Pin Socket type connector under the hood. But in any event, I didn't have the money that it would've cost to take it an hour away to the BMW dealer. So, I tried my various OBD scanners, all to no avail, The 16 pin connector wouldn't recognize the scanners, I even bought a tool specifically made for clearing BMW Air Bag lights, Even that wouldn't connect, When I bought that tool, I even bought the 20 pin to 16 pin adapter for the socket under the hood, still no luck with anything, I even had a guy with a Professional Automotive Scanner try to connect, No luck. So on a Whim after doing my Brake Bleeds, I figured I'd try playing with the BMW, Once again I tried connecting the Autel to the standard 16 pin connector under the dash, and nothing, But the tool did prompt me to connect to the 20 pin socket, I got my 20 pin adapter out, ran the SRS scan and Boom, it tells me the Passenger side restraint is triggering the code and asked if I wanted to erase it, I did, It did and the light has been out and hasn't returned yet. I'm sure a Dealer trip would have cost me at the bare minimum twice of what this tool cost, but probably more upwards to $1000 -- So Thank You Autel, I still can't believe the light is out after all this time, My next step was to start tearing out the seats and slowly tracing everything out in hopes of finding the problem. I recently did a review on the Autel TPMS 508 scanner, Both these tools together have been a tremendous help to me, I'm not so sure about longevity since these products are made in China, like most everything else, But they both saved me money I just can't afford to dish out at the moment to professional shops. So I highly recommend this scanner, It does so much more in addition to just reading codes. I would highly recommend when you get it and register it, You take the time to update it, It'll not only update the software, but also offer you updates for it seems like Hundreds of makes of cars of which you can select to download or not, Say if you don't ever plan to work on a Fiat, well no sense in downloading the software and if somewhere later on, you do work on a Fiat, then just log in a download it then. Both these Autel units are very intuitive, they walk you through step by step and if need be, will prompt you to complete something that may be needed, like me doing my Auto Bleed it automatically prompts the next step as doing a manually bleed. Between my Wife and I, We own quite a few vehicles, mostly old stuff with my 'Newest' car being a 2010 and her's a 2014, So I think this we come in very handy for years to come, I noticed in the Amazon Documentation for this product, it says something about working on most cars up to 2015, Well when I updated mine, it was downloading 2018 updates, So I think their product information is a bit dated, and BTW, Autel offers Free Lifetime updates, I had notice in the comment section a few people mention only 1 year of updates, they may have been older reviews and maybe Autel changed their update policy, But as of this review, it'll do both 2018 vehicles and comes with Lifetime Updates.

Item worked perfectly on a 2013 Sierra SLE 1500, I needed to bleed the ABS after changing a wheel cylinder out, it walks you step by step through the process. Its good that it does this as normally you would start air bleeding the brak lines starting with the farthest wheel away from the master cylinder, which is the rear passenger wheel. This tells you to start at the drivers front left, then front right, rear right then rear left. It worked perfectly. Great price for this product that does exactly what you need it to do, at must less cost than a commercial version.

Not for pros or enthusiasts. Mainly a first step tool to measure how deep in do-do you’re in. The Autel AL301 has some unassigned codes that may show up as “B2aaa”. This is a place-holder value (like -9999) and not a real code. It should have been re-labeled “N/A” or “Unknown” as it does on its sister product, MS300. A lot of these B2aaa will show up on European vehicles if the CAN-BUS is not ready or is read out of sync. Unplug, turn off engine, re-plug, turn on acc, turn on engine, read again. Usually “Unknown” errors are ancillary errors stemming from a main error. The great news is that you can usually find vehicle specific solutions on-line for the main error and fixing those will take care of the “unknown” errors - But no guarantees. It’s merely a guide to what kind of repair shop you need to take the car to. It comes with a DTC Library CD-ROM but it is Windows only and will not work in Wine on Macs (you can use a virtual machine like Fusion or Parallels) - not worth the hassle to load the CD. **UPDATE** YES, it does erase "stored" DTC codes. It will not erase "current" DTC codes if something is still wrong with your car (the CEL will come back within a few trips). After repairing the vehicle, you can re-attempt to clear the codes. In some cars, the ignition has to be in ON or ACC. In other cars, the engine has to be running and idling until the temp comes up. It all depends on how the onboard vehicle computer behaves. For example, in a 2008-2010 Cayenne, the code has to be read with the engine on. To erase stored codes, the engine had to be idle, the OBD had to be read, the engine turned off, then immediately turned back to ACC (but engine off), then the Erase command sent.

Over all a good tool for the price. The screen is larger than other models of OBDII scanners I have seen. I was also impressed with the buttons on the tool. Rather than a key pad they are soft rubber buttons that push easily and allow much easier navigation. The carrying case provides adequate protection without being too bulky. Just the right size!! Three main options on the home screen. Scan - Which will scan automatically once a couple of parameters are set and will provide any trouble codes present from the 4 systems the tool can access. Engine, Transmission, ABS and SRS. It will also provide live read out data although navigation through the live data outputs is slow. The ODBII menu provides much of the same data as the Scan menu provides. There are 6 functions in the Service menu. Oil Reset, EPB, SAS, DPF, BMS and Throttle. Most of these services are needed and used on newer vehicles. I was intrigued with the BMS as this was the first time I was made aware of this function on newer model cars. Over all a very good tool providing the essential information needed for diagnosing OBDII fault codes.

This scanner is absolutely terrible. The vast majority of the issue is with their lack of customer service. I called before I even bought the thing to make sure it would bleed the abs module in my ‘08 Tacoma. They said it looked like it would, but they would have someone email me a definitive answer in a couple days. I never got an email back so I waited. It went on sale for Prime day so I decided to take the risk. It hooked up and worked as a code reader fine. I went through and found where the auto brake bleed function was and tried it. It told me my vehicle wasn’t supported. For grins, I took the tool in and updated it through the computer to see if maybe it’s meant to be updated before you use it. I went through the registration process and, after a bit of work, was able to update the tool. The only updates available, however, had nothing to do with my truck. I brought it back outside and went through the same process again with the same results. I went as far as downloading the manual which is all but hidden on their website to verify that I was doing what I was supposed to. At that point I finally called up for tech support. A kid that was probably in his late teens or early 20’s answers the phone and proceeds to read me the manual I just struggled to find. He goes through and made the process of getting to the right menus even more difficult than it was on my own all to come to the same conclusion. He didn’t go any further to try to find an answer, he couldn’t find anything that said definitively whether it was compatible with one of the most popular trucks in North America, and after all of that he goes back on Amazon himself and “finds” me another Autel product that should work for me and acted like he saved the day. This, mind you, was after he told me that “it’s too bad you didn’t order it a few days ago because it was on sale”. I personally will never give Autel a second look. The experience I had with them was horrific. I sent it back and got a refund, but what a hassle that I didn’t really need and my brakes still have air in them. Save yourself the aggravation and find something else that doesn’t say Autel on it.
