I have a box full of scanners, bluetooth OBD plugs and a laptop full of both OEM and aftermarket software. All of them fill a need and some can do far beyond what this scanner can do, BUT they are a PITA to use or very limited compared to what this unit does. I got this because my E39 has an intermittent no crank start problem. I did a bunch of old school electrical testing and the problem remained elusive. I got this unit, downloaded the BMW module and plugged it in. I saved and cleared a boatload of codes (sort of normal for a 17 year old car) and set about looking at the immobilizer module. I go in and click on about 5 items having to do with the key codes and starter inhibit values and I'm off to the races. The first day the car starts every time so since this doesn't draw much power I leave it plugged in. The next day it says no communications but I can quickly select my 5 items again and it's ready to monitor. The second start attempt I see that the key ID is correct (key 7) but it's code is not OK so the starter is inhibited. I grab another key (3) and the car starts right up. Turn it off and put the first key (7) in and it starts. So I know the problem is in the immobilizer key code process and not something like wiring except possibly the antenna coil. It may be the easy fix is to remove the key completely and far enough away for it to be re-recognized when it is re-inserted or maybe have two keys or remove the chips from the keys and keep a couple of chips around. Still too soon to tell. Apparently if you try a bad key code several times the immobilizer shuts the start process down for a period of time. Trying to troubleshoot this without the insight to the immobilizer values was maddening. Now it's just a matter of figuring out what sequence of events causes the no crank condition. Leaving a laptop up and running for the time periods involved would be very difficult and might result in a broken window and a stolen laptop! Well done Autel!

I love it. Having the ability to purchase only the auto makers needed is great. I bought for Volvo (with the included free download) and added BMW for $10. It will accurately read the special manufacturer codes and provide much better information than simple OBDII. On BMW it doesn't provide quite the level of detail that is available from the INPA tool, but it's good enough to get you through diagnostics and gives plenty of information for an Internet search for solutions. I do have a minor complaint about tech support. Whoever I got as my support person didn't know anything at all about BMW and kept stonewalling me when I asked about the ability to connect to the ADS interface on older 20 pin connectors. He just kept telling me that Autel only supports their own products. My basic question was about the availability of an Autel 20 pin adapter for this model. He obviously knew nothing about the fact that BMW has 2 different interfaces and that some of the Autel products do support the 20 pin ADS. My main complaint is that he didn't seem to do any research for the answer. Looks like I'm on my own for that one. UPDATE: I've tried it with an OBD-to-20-pin adapter from another interface I'd gotten from 'that auction site'. It works great! I was able to talk to the airbag module on a 1998 Z3 as well as a 2000 M Roadster. It also communicated with the DME on the Z3. Didin't try the DME on the Roadster. This thing is a must-have for the BMW garage.

I've been waiting a while to review this! I decided to buy this when my WIFI OBDII dongle started acting up, but was hesitant on choosing this over the higher-priced version that included the data packages for all vehicle makes. It's one of those things where you try to think ahead to which buddies or family members are going to ask you for car help one day, and when you'll need a scanner that works with their car. But then, I realized I'm a Nissan guy. And then rest of the family is either Hyundai, Kia, or VW. I figured the cost of the scanner plus 2 more data packages (1 comes free) that covered all of our cars and trucks (7 to be exact) was a bit cheaper than the full-data version. So, I bought this version. The scanner came nicely packaged, and it just seemed like a very professional tool. I was pleased by that. I started the software install on my Windows 7 machine, and from there didn't have a very pleasant experience. My computer didn't seem to have a suitable driver, and the application looked a little antiquated, and could access the scanner. Now, to be clear, my career has been in computer/IT, so setting up and troubleshooting this stuff is trivial to me. I fussed with it for about 2 hours and had grown tired of the effort, but was still determined. After reading through some other Amazon reviews, I found the best advice: use an external USB card reader for the microSD card. (I realize not everyone probably has one of these!). The software recognized the card, and the Autel application loaded successfully! From there, there were already product updates, and those product updates seemed to fix all my previous issues. Thumbs up! I 'purchased' my free vehicle pack for Nissan, which included Infiniti models, too. I have an 04 Pathfinder and a 98 Frontier, and was particularly interested in checking the ABS codes for both vehicles, and specifically for cycling the solenoids on the ABS module. Unfortunately, the ability to use these particular diagnostic modules depends on the vehicle, which don't support those, but it does have some other useful parts (for instance, real-time monitoring of ABS speed sensors). So, that was a bummer, but realistically not a limitation of the tool, but instead of the vehicle age. Not a big deal, though, since I can pull specialty codes manually from the vehicle, but this scanner definitely compliments that info. I did explore all the functions for the Nissans, and was pleased by the unit. Maybe a little sluggish as it sweeps through systems, but was thorough enough for my needs. At that point, I downloaded the Kia and Hyundai package (again, one data package includes those for both makes) and tested on my 11 Sorento. Being a newer vehicle, it supported a few more diagnostics features of the tool, and I was pleased with that. The real test was for an 06 VW Touareg, which I was troubleshooting a terrible misfire for. Interestingly enough, the VW data package included Bentley, Bugatti, Skoda, Audi, and SEAT vehicles...not that I'll ever work on those vehicles. Not only could this read all the OBDII codes, but it could diagnose every electronic system on the Touareg...yes, it can tell you what the status is of the buttons on the power seat, if you really want to know. I used it to read diagnostics of the headlight system. While I've not personally used the VW VAG-COM diagnostic tool, I imagine this is probably a very capable substitute for it. For sure, this is both cheaper and not some bootleg. For troubleshooting the misfires, this was able to display real-time misfire data (cylinder, counts) and several other user-selectable data monitor points, like timing advance, various temperatures, RPM, etc. Definitely came in handy for this vehicle issue. For this particular vehicle, it was able to read and reset the status for various systems: steering, brakes/ABS, transmission, transfer case, lighting, climate, seats, and a few others. Bottom line is that I found the unit to be quite capable. Your particular vehicle will determine how much functionality is available. I think if you have more electronically-advance cars, this will be more useful for testing and resetting non-OBDII systems. It has other functionality that my vehicles don't have (resetting the engine oil maintenance light, for example), but appears to be a very well-rounded unit. Purchasing the additional vehicle packages was very easy. The Autel software application has seen some significant updates since purchasing, and those updates have definitely improved the interface and speed of the application. At this point, I do not need to use the microSD in a card reader; it works just fine with the included USB cable. If it weren't for the initial setup issues, this would probably be a 5-star unit, but consider it somewhere closer to 4.5 stars.

The Autel OBDII OBD2 Code Reader did reset the airbag light in my 1999 Boxster. The product works well; however, I ran into a problem setting up the code reader. The web application is poorly executed and the graphical user interface is poor. I could not even see the scrollbar in the software selection pull down menu and there were insufficient help instructions to show how to make a selection. As a result I selected a Mazda product instead of the Porsche product. I did not download/nor install the Mazda product. I immediately contacted customer service to ask for a reset so that I could get my free download. The response was "Sorry to tell you that we are not able to do reset for it. In our system, it showed that the customer retrieved Diag_Link_EUFORD/MAZDA as his free software. It was locked and we are not able to do any changes on it even it was not downloaded yet.If you mistakenly selected a wrong software, I am afraid you need to purchase your desired one." This is an unacceptable response. As a retired product development engineer for Hewlett Packard, I know that you can either reset the data to allow me to get the desired software or issue a credit for a product that I had not received. I had not downloaded nor installed the software, but had to spend $10 to get the desired product. DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM AUTEL!!!

Just received the tool. I read through the user manual after receiving it. Seems many people don’t read the manual before making comments about the updating system, because I found it to be pretty simple to follow and goes exactly as described in the manual. Since many people don’t know how to download and update the free vehicle data software, I will share my procedure here, and hope it helps. Step 1: Download Diaglink PC suite from Autel official website. (no audio on the video, laptop has a mic problem, sorry) Step 2: Connect it with PC via USB cable and open the tool, press Updata button on the onscreen menu (the Autel language for ‘Update’). Step 3: Open Diaglink Update program from PC, it will automatically read the Serial No. and registration code. For me at least, it pulled the information automatically from the tool. If for some reason yours does not do the same, you could enter it manually. Step 4: The Update program will tell you this device is not registered, so click “Register”, input your Email address and click “Submit”, a verification code will be sent to your email address. Fill in the verification code and password, then click “Register”. FYI, I have since learned that your email address and the code can be used for the Autel forums and some of their registered user help center data. Step 5: The unit will now go to the Update Page. Here you can select one vehicle you want most. It provides One FREE make/manufacture of vehicles for downloading. I selected Honda, including Acura. If you want to download additional vehicles, you log in Autel website with the registered Autel ID and purchase from your account. Hope you find the video helpful. It was a labor of love. I am happy I could learn something about video editing and doing helpful reviews at the same time.

I hope this helps someone out there. Pros 1. Autel Diaglink is a very nice and well made product, very sturdy 2. Packaging consists of car connector wire, USB wire, cd and user manual 3. Was delivered on time Cons 1. Instructions are a bit disorganized. I inserted the CD only to find it does not auto play or auto launch on Windows 10. The CD containes a bunch of pdf manuals for many Autel models none of which were for Diaglink. I installed the software on the CD by clicking a setup file which installed the Autel Suite on my computer. However, the right software ended up being the Diaglink PC Suite ONLY DOWNLOADABLE FROM the Autel website. 2. Confusion on using autel.com or auteltech.com, my password worked on both. 3.Got the latest Nissan software for free. It was the latest one. Diaglink was advertised as being able to diagnose SRS codes, but it only showed "tester not communicating with controller" for the SRS option when tried on a Versa Note SV 2014. The NISSAN software I got was Nissan V6.10. Maybe in future versions the problem might be corrected. It is still a very nice product to use so I gave it 3 stars.

I'm using this on a Volvo 2.5T XC90. It reads and clears the codes from all modules. Used it to reset the airbag light that was set by low battery -- first clear codes in SRS module, then clear codes in CEM. Works perfectly! Way better than going to the dealer. Also, pulls the codes to tell me the 4WD has a bad 'haldex' motor. A simple code reader will not be able to pull those codes, this will. Pulled radio codes. Alarm codes, etc. It comes with one free 'manufacturer', I chose Volvo. I'm gonna add honda and toyota and mazda eventually (costs $10 additional each). What a great value! UPDATE: I added Honda for $10 because I had a code for VTEC pressure sensor failure on a 2006 2.4L Accord. Once fixed, its code would not clear using Torque 2 app and bluetooth dongle. When I went to use this tool, it cleared the code right away.
