I had a small handheld OBD reader made by launch, so I wanted to get into something a little better, that would also read ABS, and erase codes, so I bought another lunch, paid $139 for it, was the biggest crap handheld unit I ever used, send it back, then I bought Autel AL549, for $69, this is worth every penny of it easy to use, the grafts and charts are useful, and it really let you know what's going on with the ABS system, I would definitely buy this unit again.

This is a very high value tool. For under $35 at the time writing you have access to all fundamental OBD-II information. The ability to see monitor readiness is fantastic when making repairs or seeing if someone has recently "cleared codes" on a vehicle. Live read of sensor data is quite handy for diagnostics. Critically, it clears codes exactly as expected. The display is bright and clear. The buttons are extremely tactile so no errant key presses are likely. The interface is intuitive. The cable is short enough to keep this tucked in a glove box but not so short that you are bent under the steering wheel. Build quality is solid and has withstood hot and cold temperatures easily. There are two points of improvement: 1. the scanner is a bit slow to connect to the vehicle's computer 2. There is no ability to graph or plot data over time. This can make things like seeing oxygen sensor waveforms difficult. However I would argue that for less than $35 these are compromises worth making. The company is also extremely fast to respond to inquiries. They clearly care that you received a working product and are comfortable using it! Personally I would (and do) keep one of these in every vehicle.

I previously bought a cheap OBD 2 scanner (Memoscan/menoscan U480) which was complete garbage. I had thought OBD 2 was standardized and all vehicles should work the same, at least for basic settings. I was wrong. It wouldn't connect to most vehicles, and the one vehicle it did connect to, it said that my 1998 Tacoma had no readiness sensors. This one actually works, and it will connect to our 98 Tacoma and 08 Volvo S40. It's a little slow, but apparently there are a bunch of different protocols it has to try. I'm ok with it, I won't be using it every day.

I have an older vehicle… and the “Check Engine” light likes to come on periodically. Needless to say… going to a shop can cost A BIT these days. My daughter’s boyfriend happened to have one of these little gems… and gave us a code read on my car. What a great thing to have, I thought. So on his recommendation, I bought my own. Not only does it read the code… it also allows you to reset the code… which is GREAT for those nuisance codes that have no real effect on the actual running of the vehicle… and gives you the piece of mud to know the difference…
