    • Very Nice Consumer-level Scanner that Requires Professional-level Steps to Update.
I recently bought an AL549 for my son's first diagnostic reader. It's actually quite nice as modern handheld OBD code readers go. It supports two primary systems (engine and ABS), and offers modest battery and charging diagnostics executed from the OBD port as a nifty bonus. It is easy to use, albeit a little slower than the more professional level tablets. But it gets the job done, and has a full feature set in its limited diagnostic areas, with a nice bright color screen, and easy to use keypad. And it even has a one touch emissions readiness feature, with traffic light style LED results. Very nice at the price. Great for the homeowner or burgeoning shade tree mechanic wanting to know what's wrong with their car's engine, brakes or battery/alternator. And it offers free lifetime software updates. But while using this reader is easy, updating it is a bit more complicated, and requires some computer savvy. And some understanding of the automotive service industry. And that's where this little Autel takes some consumer hits. Having a more upscale Autel professional grade tablet for my own vehicles, it appears to be a controversial process for new Autel owners attempting to update these modest DIY-level readers. Autel, while not at the price point or capability level of Snap-on and OEM-level diagnostics, has a legitimate aftermarket service market presence. Many professional mechanics in smaller shops use Autels. Their product registration and subscription models are fairly typical for the professional service industry. But that setup process can be an annoyance for the DIY user who just wants a quick free update. And can't understand why they need to open accounts, and "register" a simple $65 code reader. But that's just the way of the industry today. Most mechanics pay dearly for the proprietary diagnostic data updates. And the industry keeps tight control over customer access to it. The model is the headache. So first, to get the most out of this little AL549, and its free updates, you need to open a user account with Autel, just like the pro mechanics do. That takes about 3 minutes on their website, and is free. Use an alias email account if you are nervous about it. But thousands of professional mechanics have already opened accounts to support their $2,000+ Autel tablets and $1,000+ annual update subscriptions. Once you have an Autel account, you need to register the AL549 to the account, which requires the serial no. and password of the tool. And registration activates warranty and support coverage on it. The serial number is right on the back of the unit. The password (a series of numbers) is found in the settings menu of the device. Once you have those two identifiers, registering the reader to your Autel account takes another 2 minutes. And it immediately comes up in your Autel account as yours, with applicable warranty coverage dates. The next step for a registered AL549 is downloading and installing Autel's MaxiPC Suite on a Windows machine. Many Android-powered Autel tablets don't need this software, and natively update themselves. But some Maxi models, and these much less powerful DIY readers, do need the PC app support. It's the trade off for the far less powerful, and far cheaper, hardware. Want to avoid the PC update software dance for your sub-$100 scanner? Go buy a $500+ Autel tablet. The software takes about 2 minutes to install on a typical Windows machine. If there are any concerns over the software, make sure your internet security and anti-virus programs are up to date, and scan away. Use an IoT network if you have spyware fears. But thousands of mechanics have installed this same software on their shop computers to support their more expensive Autel diagnostic tools. Once the device is registered on your Autel account, and MaxiPC Suite is installed, updating the AL549 is easy. Connect the AL549 to the Windows machine with a USB-C to USB-A cable. The AL549 will power up. Start the MaxiPC program. The program won't immediately see the AL549. One more step. Place the AL549 into "Update Mode" in its settings. It will then be immediately detected by MaxiPC. A prompt will then open to enter your Autel account ID and account password (not the device password). Once your Autel account ID and password are entered into the MaxiPC dialog window, any available updates for the AL549 will be shown. Select those you want, and the software will do the rest. The AL549, at under $100, is a low-powered instrument, with very modest processing power and on board memory. So the updates take about 5-10 minutes to install. Go get a cup of coffee. Once the updates are completed, disconnect the AL549 from the USB C cable (turning off the AL549), and then reconnect it. The AL549 will promptly reboot, with the updated software installed. And that's all there is to it. And it's free, and a continuing feature. Free diagnostic software updates. For under $100. This little handheld machine is awesome. I am so glad a purchased this as I have an old 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis that I have put over 10K into restoring. I used it right out of the box. It informs you if your battery is good & told me exactly what codes were an issue when the engine light came on. It saves me from having to go to the auto store to use their reader. Great little hand held unit for home use. Let me get to directly to the trouble spot when my ABS light came on, without having to pay for a diagnostic test at the dealer. Would have given this 5 stars, but the registration, and verification, process is a major pain. More like you would expect for a commercial unit costing thousands of dollars, not a hand held fof home garage use. ... show more

do not work in my vehicle, I have a week waiting for an answer in the autel website....but I do not get nothing.... I bring the scanner from usa to my country so I can`t return the item...so I guess I just lost my money, or have to found something that have a car the can be scanned with it and try to convence him that buy to me giving him a discount and I will losing money..... very dissapointed with this product. ... show more

    • This reader falls short if you are trying to diagnose an ABS fault
I have a 2003 Ford Expedition. My ABS light is on. This OBD2 scanner is unable to identify the cause of the light being on.

    • Works great, product support excellent. Be careful about your USB cable, AL549 is finicky about it.
UPDATE: I went around and around with the Autel hardware and software support people, once I got on their radar. They were relentless, asking for every possible piece of documentation on the computer I was using and checking my device manager and all kinds of obscure stuff. I got to hand it to them: They absolutely were committed to getting to the bottom of the problem. As I mentioned below, I used three or four (or five!) different USB cables to connect my computer to the AL549, and reloaded the software several times from the site. No avail. They finally decided to have me ship it back to their factory, and include one of my own USB cables that I was using (since the box does not include a USB cable, even though the documentation says it does). I was packaging it up and deciding which USB cable I should send back to them when I pulled a sixth cable out of the pile, and again tried it. PRESTO! The computer connected to the AL549 and the software found the device and opened it. Problem solved. All of this trouble could have been averted if they had provided their own USB cable in the box, but all's well that ends well, and I highly commend their product support for their professionalism and knowledge level. Yeah, it works. OK. But part of why I bought this was because the programming on the unit was suppose to be upgradable: Register with Autel, download the software, connect to computer via USB (I had to use my own USB cable because there was no cable in the box even though the instructions said there was), and then upgrade the on-board programming. I followed all the steps but computer software would not connect with the device. I repeatedly tried to contact their customer support, both from Amazon and from their website directly. NADA. I got a strange response from my Amazon request for assistance, with strange comments about a video link and whether I had an SD card installed. Then nothing. Whaaaaat?? P.S. I tried three different USB cables, all of which I know are good, and on two different computers: Win10 and Win11. The disconnect is definitely not on my end. So their product support seems to be nonexistent. If anything changes, I will update this review. ... show more
