The Attwood WaterBuster Portable Submersible Pump (Model 4140-4) offers a safe, cord-free way to remove unwanted water instantly. Running for up to five hours on three standard alkaline "D" batteries, this cordless utility pump completely eliminates the hassle and danger of electrical extension cords in wet marine environments. It delivers an excellent portable pump-out solution for kayaks, inflatables, duck boats, paddle boats, and dinghies that lack a hard-wired, permanent electrical setup. This compact submersible unit measures just 6-3/8" high and 5-1/4" in diameter, allowing it to fit into tight spaces effortlessly. Despite its small profile, the WaterBuster moves up to 200 gallons of water per hour and can lift water to a maximum height of 40 inches. It comes equipped with a 42-inch drainage hose and a built-in garden hose adapter for easily attaching longer hoses. It is also perfect for draining pool covers, aquariums, and sump pits. Update: 8 years later (time flies), and this pump (plus a lot of carrying buckets back and forth) mitigated disaster yet again. My main sump pump failed this time causing water to backup in my basement, and this ran like a champ for the better part of 2 hours clearing the water while waiting for an emergency plumber to arrive. I bought this after my Sump Pump discharge line froze over the winter and I struggled with a manual siphon + buckets to empty my window well before the house flooded. A few nights ago the (same) pump burnt out during a rainstorm and I had to enact my 'emergency plan' to clear out the water. This pump worked perfectly. It takes a couple of minutes for it to completely fill a large contractors bucket (5 gallons I think?). I filled up 4 of those before my window well was cleared without any issues. The pump moves the most water when fully submerged, losing speed when the water level gets down to a few inches. The hose that comes attached to this pipe is relatively small, but uses a standard fitting. In my case, I connected it to an old washing machine hose to give it sufficient reach. The pump was sitting at the bottom of my window well, with the hose coming up and through the window, and the extension going down to a bucket on the floor (several feet below). Once the pump gets started in this configuration, it is aided by the siphoning effect. In fact, if you turn the pump off, water will continue flowing, albeit at a significantly slower rate. I can't attest to how this pump might perform if pumping entirely up, versus my simpler case of pumping up a foot and then down. My only complaints about the pump are: - It can be difficult to unscrew the top to install or change the batteries. - There is no battery-charge indicator. I plan on erring on the safe side and put in fresh batteries after each emergency use (and hope I don't need to use it for a long time but remember to check the battery in a few years to ensure it doesn't leak). - The power button would be better situated on top. When submerged and out of view, it can be tricky to find the button by feel. - Given the implicit siphoning action when turned off, it would be nice if a valve was included to stop the water flow (ie: when changing buckets). I will be picking up a cheap valve when I have a chance to keep with the pump.

I purchased this product in an attempt to ease my above ground pool setup this summer. I prefer to purchase a pool cover without holes for rainwater to drip through which also means that in heavy rains, inches of water collect on top of the cover which takes a lot of effort with buckets and time to empty out. This year I bought this little pump, it is EXCELLENT. I used it yesterday after 2-3 days of heavy rains and within fifteen minutes all of the water was gone!! It had completely sucked it up in the time I went back into my kitchen. This makes life much easier as I can just leave it in the water and let it pump on out! My only complaint which doesnt even deduct a star is that the hose wraps tightly around the unit which is quite nice for storage purposes, but I'd like to be able to just toss it over the edge of the pool but it is still tightly coiled.

The pump worked awesome right out of the box, I used it to pump rain water out of my 10' inflatable dinghy after a rain storm. Worked quick - never submerged it completely but the water level did reach the on/off push button. One week later I needed to pump out rain water from the dinghy once again. Pump would not start. I opened it and found condensation on the battery holder, I dried it and replaced the batteries but the pump still would not turn on. I did notice a small amount of water below the battery pack. When I put the lid back on the pump i noticed air bubbles coming out from behind the on/off switch. I opened the unit back up and removed the on/off switch and found that the manufacturer does not seal the switch, they seem to rely on a rubber boot that sits atop the switch holding nut. That seems to be where the water came in. A simple o-ring in between the switch and the housing would go a long way. I'm going to dry it out and try it again before I return it - hopefully the small pump motor has not been corroded by the condensation. But since it is supposed to be submersible and I didn't submerse it, and water still got in and it and only lasted for one use I have to give this 1 star. If i could give less than 1 star I would. I'll be adding an o-ring to the switch and If I can save the pump I'll update this post.

This pump works very nicely and removes water collecting on my cover. However, it did not live up to the capacity stated, in that it pumps well at the start but as the batteries run down, pumping capacity falls off quickly. A set of batteries is good for only about 1-1/2 hours at a decent rate versus the 5-7 claimed. This is adequate if there is not a huge amount of water on the cover and I am satisfied in that respect. Removing the cover to install batteries is tough. When new, I had to put a broomstick through the handle to get enough leverage to open it, and it hasn't eased much since. It was left on the cover during periods when there was ice on it without damage. All in all, I believe I got my money's worth and then some. The only other thing I could ask for would be an automatic on/off switch. That would give it 5 stars.

Great handy pump- I used it to pump-out rainwater in my 13ft boat. ( I will use it for my kayak as well.) As soon as I pushed the button, it immediately filled & pumped efficiently & really quietly. Very easy!! It should be noted that initially, this little pump was very difficult to unscrew/disassemble in order to install the 3 D batteries. I was concerned I would break the handle trying to twist the top to open position. After a number of tries by myself & others it finally turned. We then greased the O-ring with vaseline to prevent future frustration.

Did I EVER UNDERESTIMATE how GREAT this pump would be! I read the pros and cons, but I just had to do someting, you see, we have property at the beach, and it only has a garage on it, but we go fishing, crabbing, and do a bit of gardening too, so we NEEDED a shower, bad! This pump works like a champ! The flow is Fantastic, and if you use the instructions, it works perfect. I use a 5 gallon bucket, this pump, and BAM, I have a shower! Yes, I did heat the water first, but in a pinch, it's all you need. I have also purchased the Zodi shower pump and heater, after my good luck with this pump, and it's Fantastic too! I now use them both! Inside and Out! I have had NO pressure issues AT ALL, and that seemed to be the biggest issue on these items. Positioning them is part of getting good pressure, do it right, and you will have no problems at all. USE THE CORRECT BATTERIES TOO. It does make a HUGE difference! I use the pump all the time, and it's still like new! Pumping away to my delight!

I needed something like a bilge pump to drain the dirty water out of the bottom of our huge Intex pool; there's only so much that will drain from the pool's drain opening, so we're always left with a few inches of standing water that needs to be removed before we can fill it with clean water. In the past, I've tried using our small shop vac, but I had to stop constantly to empty the canister. I wasn't looking to spend a lot of money, so this portable water pump seemed like it was exactly what we needed. I was surprised at the compact size of this item when I opened the box, and admittedly, I was doubtful as to how well it would work. Keep in mind that we had a lot of leaves (and grass and dirt) mixed-in with the standing water in our pool, but I gave it a shot, anyway. Wow...was I surprised! It took a while, but we really did have a lot of water to drain; when it became clogged with leaves (you can tell by the gurgling sound it makes), it was easy to remove the plate on the bottom and unclog it. I also like the fact that the drainage tube is clear -- you can look at it from a distance and see that it's draining, as opposed to getting right on top of it to check. With all of the organic debris in that water, the tube itself didn't get clogged at all, which in itself, is a testament to how well it works. It's also worth noting that the drainage tube can be connected to a garden hose (we used a short one); this was another bonus for us because the hose had to be long enough to extend up and over the sides of the pool. The only improvement I would make as far as the design is that it would be nice to have both an intake hose and an outtake hose; we still needed to use the shop vac for the little puddles of water that were too shallow for the portable pump to drain -- if it had an intake hose, I could have used it like a shop vac that doesn't need to be emptied. Also, there are other things you might like to drain that the WaterBuster pump won't fit into (I tried it with our stand-alone ice maker that needs to be drained when cleaning and such, and it wouldn't fit inside). All in all, I'm very glad I made this purchase; it was worth every penny. This is a handy little item to have around!

I bought this product less than 3 weeks ago. The 1st time I used it on our small boat, it worked impressively. The 2nd time it was dead. I opened the battery case and found some moisture and a tiny amount of water – maybe a quarter ounce. Previously I noted reviewers’ problems with having water get inside. So even though it is designed to be completely submersible, I held it only an inch or two in the water. This negated any possibility that the water came in through the seal on the cap. I tried to dry it, changed batteries, checked connections – nothing brought Lazerus back to life. I first called Attwood for advice. She thought that water can enter from the bottom and damage the motor if it wasn’t seated properly during manufacture. Even with new units, their policy was to only send possibly defective parts. In other words, if her guess was correct, they would expect me to properly install a part that their own process couldn’t do right. Since Amazon is more customer friendly, they will send a new replacement at no cost. I will experiment with the new one, and leave the casing open when not in use, even though as others have noted, the top is tighter than my Uncle Johnny and can only be removed with elbow grease and a few choice words. If this one doesn’t work, I will get a refund and invest in very long straws!
