The ATOMSTACK Swift 7W has been an incredible addition to my workshop, and I can confidently say it’s a perfect choice for both beginners and more seasoned engravers. What sets this apart from many other entry-level machines is its modular design—I had it unboxed, assembled, and ready to go in about 10 minutes. It’s compact enough for a small desk or studio but has a 300x300mm working area that provides plenty of space for a wide variety of projects like customized coasters, leather patches, and wooden signs. The cross-platform compatibility is where this laser really shines. It is rare to find a budget-friendly machine that plays so well with everything. I’ve used it seamlessly with both my Android phone and iPad (iOS) via the AtomStack app, which is surprisingly intuitive for quick projects. For more detailed designs, it connects perfectly to both my Mac and Windows PC. Having the flexibility to switch between mobile and desktop setups depending on the complexity of the job is a huge convenience. In terms of performance, the 7W laser is punchy and precise. I’ve been looking to get a laser engraver for a while — something I can experiment with. The Atomstack Swift seemed to be a perfect fit for what I was looking to do. My goal was to use a laser engraver to transfer digital line work to wood or linoleum for woodcuts. When I opened the box, I quickly saw that there was a little bit of setup involved. You have to assemble the frame and connect everything. My office/studio is a little limited on space, so I ended up at the kitchen table to put this all together. The setup was not the most complex I’ve dealt with, but the instructions left a little to be desired in terms of explaining how everything fit together, so it took a few tries. One notable issue: this engraver does not come with a base. You will have to buy a honeycomb base separately, and you need to get one that fits inside the frame. You also need to buy one that is a little on the thinner side. The one I bought was a little too thick, so I ended up having to raise the engraver frame up in order to use it properly. You will also want eye protection. While this is a lower power laser, it’s still enough to cause eye damage if you’re the kind of person that wants to watch it work. While I was able to get a successful test done on a piece of spare poplar scrap, this is a tool that will take a little time to master. The intensity of the laser and the speed of the engraving matter a lot. I found that, after a few tries, you really need to dial in the speed — that’s going to mean the difference between a really light print (too fast), a charred mess (too slow), and a decent print. This isn’t something you set and forget either: you need to be present while this is working, because you are working with a laser that can start fires if unattended. The good and the bad: this uses wifi to connect. While it only connects on the 2Ghz spectrum, it does connect. I did have an issue with one test where it lost connection, so be aware of the possibility. While Atomstack has software for your desktop, I chose to use the iOS app — it was usable, but not exactly intuitive. As I mentioned, I used a scrap piece of poplar — this wasn’t in their material list, so I chose “birch” settings and increased the speed from 1000 to 2000. When I attempted to home the engraver I got repeated messages that the limit switch wasn’t working. Since I don’t anticipate that I’ll ever do an engraving large enough to even engage that I was only mildly concerned. I ended up using “user coordinates” instead and relying on the “frame” functionality to figure out where I needed to place my materials. Once I got the speed and temperature matched to my material (which took finagling), it was pretty accurate for my design. Would I get another one of these? The Swift seems like a pretty basic and rudimentary model. While the price was right (inexpensive), I will probably save my spare change up for a while and get a more fully-featured engraver in the future.

I’ve used a few different laser engravers over the years, and I’d put the this one somewhere in the middle of the pack. It’s not the most powerful machine out there, but for the price, it holds its own — especially if you’re just getting into laser engraving or only need it for occasional projects. I was impressed with how easy it was to use right out of the box. Setup was quick, and I was engraving within the first hour. That alone makes it a great pick for beginners who don’t want to wrestle with complicated calibration or software headaches. The 7W laser is strong enough to handle wood, leather, dark acrylic, and even glass or metal (with the right prep). I’ve had good luck engraving on wood and leather — clean lines, decent depth, and enough precision for logos and small text. It’s not going to slice through thick materials like a 20W machine, but it’ll cut 1/8" plywood with a few passes if you dial in your settings. The 300x300mm work area is generous for a desktop unit, and the spot size (around 0.05mm x 0.1mm) gives you enough detail for most hobby-level projects. It works with LightBurn, which is a plus. Documentation says it also works with LaserGRBL but I didn’t try it with that software. I also like that it doesn’t take up much space. I can stash it away when I’m not using it, which is important since I don’t have a dedicated workshop. If you’re on the fence or just want to dip your toe into laser engraving without spending a fortune, this is a solid option. It’s not perfect, but it’s capable — and if you decide laser work isn’t your thing, you’re not out a ton of money. 🕵️♀️Agent Squirrel's Field Report: Before I write a review, I put it through my own interrogation process.
