  • Excellent beginner printer, great for multicolor prints
I have a Kobra S1, but I wanted to get a Kobra X for the various improvements it has, including the ability to multicolor/multimaterial print much faster. The printer is very easy to set up - the manual has clear instructions, and there's only a few screws to put in. It's impossible to put it together wrong. If this type of thing is new for you, just take your time and you'll be fine. Once I got it assembled, I turned it on and let it calibrate. Calibration takes about 35 minutes, but once it does, it is good to go. I printed a Bency for my first run and it was absolutely perfect - no stringing, no bad overhangs, nothing. I never quite got a Benchy to look that good on my S1, and here the X gets it on the first try. I next printed a 3 color duck, and again, it came out perfectly. I sliced it for my S1, and it said it would take about 10 hours to print. The X did it in 5 and had much less waste. The X is quiet, fast, and accurate. I'll still keep my S1, though. For one, the X isn't enclosed, so it can't really do ABS. The S1 is excellent with ABS, so it still has it's uses. Also, the X doesn't come with an AMS - it doesn't really need one. However, I do appreciate the AMS that came with my S1 (which doesn't work on the X, by the way) for keeping my filament dry. Plus, now I can print two things at one. I guess all this is to say the X and S1 both have unique advantages and it's worth keeping both - if you have an S1, you'll be glad to get an X, but you won't feel the need to ditch your S1. This ended up being an excellent beginner's printer. It's affordable, doesn't require an AMS to get multimaterial prints, is easy to set up, and was printing perfectly out of the box. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Amazing Printer Especially at This Price
Anycubic Kobra X Review Amazing Printer Especially at This Price TL\DR: At the current price of $300 I STRONGLY recommend this printer for beginners and experienced 3D print enthusiasts alike! The Anycubic Kobra X provides outstanding print quality and multi-material support without requiring any additional hardware. There's still a lot of waste involved, but that's just the nature of multimaterial printing with a single hot end. There is some assembly required. Assembly is easy and shipping it in a smaller carton this way reduces shipping costs. The multi-material system uses a similar concept to the 3D Chameleon, but it's a much more compact implementation. The printer takes up half the space of the Kobra 3 V2 with an ACE Pro. I don't usually like mounting spool holders on top of a printer, but these are sturdy and it doesn't seems to diminish the print quality at all. Filament changes are quicker - around 40-60 seconds for the Kobra X vs. almost 2 minutes for my Kobra 3 V2 or my Kobra S1. Add about 20 seconds if you're using a purge block. The Kobra X is generally surprisingly quiet. Active noise cancellation seems to work, but I can't test the difference because it can't be disabled. Print Quality is excellent, and as long as your build plate is clean, the first layer is as close to perfect as I've seen. Clean the build plate with dish soap and warm water before you print anything -- it probably has someone's oily fingerprints on it. The printer goes together pretty quick -- took me about 20 minutes -- just follow the instructions. It takes somewhat longer if you do what I did and drop the hex wrench down through the slot in the top of the case. So don't do that. If you do, note that there are screws under the two front feet, so you'll have to peel the front feet off to get to them. There is a total of 12 screws holding the bottom cover in place. When installing the gantry, run all 8 screws in before tightening any of them, then go around and tighten them all. I like that the screws go in from the top instead of from the bottom, and the assembly is quite solid once the screws are tightened. The covers can be a pain to install - I used a small flat head screwdriver to kind of pry them into place. I hope I don't ever have to remove them. Loading Filament: There is an RFID tag reader, but it doesn't really save you any effort. Using the RFID reader, you first select which "slot" you're loading, tap the RFID button, tap the "Start Detection" button, wait for the bed to move, scan the RFID tag, then load the filament until the printer chimes. To load filament manually, just load it and when the printer chimes you can select the filament type and color. This is one place where the ACE Pro does a better job. Once filament is loaded, you can synch the filaments in the slicer. The app seems to handle this automatically. The Good: Build plate alignment pins -- like on the Kobra S1 -- make centering the build plate easier than on the Kobra 3. The print head rides on a linear rail and the bed rides on metal "POM" wheels that ride on stainless steel rods. They're low maintenance and you'll probably never need to replace the wheels or the bearings. The ACE 2 Pro is supported, but not needed. You can have up to 19 spools of filament by adding four ACE 2 Pros, but I'm not sure how that would work, and I have no plans to find out. Using the printer without the ACE 2 Pro means you have fewer electrical plugs and don't have to worry about jamming inside the ACE. BUT there's no filament dryer and it's not quite as easy to load, so there are some compromises. The print head displays which filament is being used at any given time. This is handy if there's a breakage or clog. If the filament breaks or runs out, any remaining filament in the extruder gets retracted through a slot next to the corresponding tube on the filament hub. Just pull the piece out, push the new filament into place, and tap the Resume button. This is a brilliant feature, and I hope other manufacturers implement their own versions soon. Print Quality is outstanding. Faster print speeds do result in a less glossy finish on the models, and varying print speeds within the same model will cause some banding because of that, so if you need perfection, slow things down. But that's true on any 3D printer. The quick change nozzle doesn't require replacing the entire hot end. You swap out just the nozzle, no tools required, and no wires to unplug. Nozzle changes are far easier than replacing the hot end on the Kobra S1 or Kobra 3 V2, and replacing a clogged or damaged nozzle doesn't waste a perfectly good heater cartridge and thermistor. Anycubic Slicer Next is one of the better forks of OrcaSlicer, but is still a couple of releases behind, so I still prefer Orca. But Orca doesn't have profilesfor the Kobra X yet, and Anycubic's slicer works well with their printers. I hope they open the Kobra X up to OrcaSlicer soon. And Maker Online is a decent copy of MakerWorld. I actually find myself printing directly from the app or the web site more than I expected. Neither Good nor Bad: The RFID reader works but is not as easy to use as the ones in the ACE Pro. You can create your own RFID tags using the ACE RFID app from the Play Store and any NFC \ RFID tag stickers that support TAG215 or 216, so you're not locked into Anycubic's filament at all. No Nippers included? Seems kinds cheap, but I already have plenty. If you're shopping for your first 3D printer, spend a few bucks and get a good pair of flush cut nippers. you'll need them to cut all the zip ties. FWIW - be careful cutting them and you can end up with some extra large zip ties that can still be used. The screen is not adjustable at all - no tilt or rotation. The Bad: The Kobra X is not compatible with existing ACE Pros. I have two, both of which will remain dedicated to my Kobra 3 V2. I understand the ACE 2 Pro is an improvement over the original, but I don't see any real reason not to make the printer backwards compatible. The sample coil of filament is all but useless. It's not likely to stay on a spool holder, and it's only 10 meters, so not enough to print anything. Anycubic should just not bother. If this is going to be your first 3D printer, order a few spools of filament to go with it. The "chimes" are LOUD, but you can turn them off. Unfortunately, turning them off means it won't chime when filament is inserted. A volume control would be nice. There are no knobs for adjusting belt tension. You have to remove some plugs and use hex wrenches. It doesn't have to be done very often though, so not that big a deal. The only way to connect to the printer via WiFi is via the slicer or the app -- there is no way to monitor prints from a web browser. Yet. Connecting to the printer via the slicer requires it to either be in LAN mode, which prevents using cloud services, including the app, or for you to log into your MakerOnline account in the slicer. I don't really want to have my printer connected to "the cloud" all the time, but using it in LAN mode means I can't monitor it from the living room. This is a lazy design -- users should be able to connect via either the app or the slicer, as long as they're connected to the same WiFi, without either connecting the printer to the web or changing a setting on the printer. Summary: This is an excellent printer, with a surprising number of features, especially at the $300 price point. If it fits your budget, I'd recommend it as an outstanding first printer, especially for someone who just wants to turn it on and print. At the current price of around 300 bucks, this is an amazingly solid 3D printer, and a bargain. ... show more

  • This printer is great, highly recommended
This is an awesome printer for the price. It is super easy to set up, with just 8 screws and 2 connections you are ready to calibrate and print. Its great for beginners and experts alike. Sure, an enclosure would be nice but that can be added later. I am pleasantly surprised with this printer. I planned to say spend a little more and get something else but the efficiency, features, and print quality have changed my mind. All of the features work very well, from the auto bed leveling to the smart features. The print speed is fantastic. This thing is so much better than other printers in the price point or even cheaper. Its basically an A1 but upgraded and more reliable. The slicer is just a reskinned orca slicer which is awesome as well. Printing with multi color is a game changer. This one works very well and its a great introduction to multicolor printing. This is a good value (great value if you get it on sale) and i definitely recommend it. ... show more

  • Technical support did not exist
Print beautiful, extremely fast—when it actually functions. My old 3D printer has been running reliably for four years. I purchased this model for its multi-color capability, but it broke in less than a couple of month. When it failed, technical support was nonexistent. I spent over a week trying to get warranty support with no response. I bought it directly from the company. The extended warranty is useless since it’s still under the original warranty. Save your money and avoid this company to prevent headaches. You'll thank me later. Texas A&M honor code! ... show more
