I’ve already wound several skeins into neat, center-pull yarn cakes with this winder, and I’m honestly kicking myself for not buying one years ago. It’s very easy to attach to a table or counter and stays firmly in place while winding - no wobbling, no drama. The cakes come out beautifully shaped, and I was especially impressed with how well it handled thick, chunky yarn without slipping or struggling. Smooth, consistent winding every time. For the price, this yarn winder is an excellent value. The quality feels comparable to other solid at-home winders, and it seems well made and durable - I don’t have any concerns about it breaking anytime soon. It’s quiet, efficient, and a huge time saver. I’m so happy to finally have this in my craft room… I’ve clearly needed it for the past 20 years. I had to get the hang of this yarn spinner and work out the kinks. The last few pics show where i went wrong. I was not holding the yarn tight and so as i was winding / cranking, some yarn fell down to the bottom and when i removed the skein from the stand, some of the winded yarn fell apart due to lacl of tightness. So i did it again and you can see that it produces a tighter ball of yarn thus making my storage of skeins more compact and tidy. And when spun tightly the skein stays intact no yarn falls apart. Pros 1. Winds nicely , easy cranking motion 2. Able to accommodate my 1.25 inch desk thickness. 3. Knob fastens tightly thus no sliding on the desk 4. Yarn hole is wide enabling me to spin my chenille also not just the 3 or 4 ply skinnier yarn 5. Easy twist on assembly holder. Easy cranking to spin yarn. Pull out metal rod and it stays in place. Large hole to handle thicker yarn 6/16 th inch. Cons 1. Must hold yarn tight while winding yarn else yarn can fall to the bottom of spool of go under unit. 2. Need to keep an eye on winding process esp when yarn is tangled and you have to let go. Before resuming spinning make aure yarn is held tight and yarn on skein is not at the bottom but middle of skein to properly continue winding. Issues n Fixes 1. To avoid skein from being loose, be aure to hols yarn tight and watch the skein of yarn apinning that yarn never falls down to the bottom. Also be sure to leave a long tail once yarn is set up locking it in place because too short of yarn tail at the beginnign could unravel the top. 2. To avoid having to stop multiple times, be sure the ball of yarn you are using is not tangled up, spend some time fixing that first.

I knit and crochet. I ask friends to give me their extra skeins. If they are not in a ball already this yarn winder is the easy solution. Just attach it to a thin table. It has an L bracket you move up and down to clamp to a table. The knob is on top. Then pull out the yarn holder arm, thread yarn through and put it on top in the slit. Slowly turn handle and it makes an even tension ball of yarn. You can unroll the ball through the middle or the outside. Tips: My husband holds the skein around two hands and I turn the handle of the winder. It takes just a minute or two to wind a ball. Holding the skeins correctly will keep the yarn from knotting. Turn slowly for even tension and to keep yarn from winding under the holder. If your skein has more yarn you can make the ball bigger by gently pushing the ball up an inch, wind a few more, push it up an inch, and repeat. If your careful you can make a very large and tall ball.

GAVAEU Manual Yarn Winder, Khaki Wool Ball Winder for 3.5oz Yarn Cakes This is a handy machine for making center-pull little yarn cakes from larger rolls or cones. While it’s not as large or sturdy as my Stanwood winder and can’t handle hundreds of yards of yarn above size 4 per cake, it’s perfect for winding smaller portions from cones, making it much more convenient for me than lugging around a bulky cone, especially when I am frequently switching colors for stripes or Fair Isle projects. The gears run smoothly, it fits standard yarn cake tubes, and it winds a tight center-pull cake. Just what you would expect from a yarn winder. The one caveat is the table clamp only screws open to 1 inch wide which doesn't work in my studio since all my countertops are much thicker than that. However, I can still hold the winder steady with one hand and crank with the other when needed. For the price, it does the job just fine if you need to wind your yarn quickly. And if you have a place to clamp it and leave it, then all the better. REVIEW PHILOSOPHY: I only review a product if it is something I am capable of critically evaluating through comparison, testing and use. This means I have experience of using similar items; or that I have equipment or tools that I can test it with; or that I have an upcoming need so I can actually use.
