I picked this up primarily because both my daughter (17) and my daughter-in-law were so impressed by the yarn ball winder I got for Christmas last year, and I figured one of them would love to have one of their own. Plus, I'm always interested in finding out if there is something better out there! There are two main things that I use a yarn ball winder for. The first is that if you are using hanks of yarn, you absolutely have to get them into usable form before you begin to knit or crochet. I'm certain this winder would do great with that, but I don't currently have any hanks that I am ready to work with, so I haven't tried. The second reason I use a yarn ball winder is to make up smaller balls of yarn for my C2C (corner to corner) projects. I've started two different squares of an afghan since this winder arrived, and that definitely gave me the opportunity to try this out. My first impressions were not very good. That was pretty much all user error, though. Looking at the instructions (a single photocopied page) would have helped. Some assembly is required, and it is easy. But if you don't do it correctly, it doesn't work so well. First, the yarn guide needs to be flipped around and locked in place. Turn the winder upside down and it is totally obvious. Second, the center spindle needs to be put onto the circular base. Put it in, and "turn spindle to the left until it stops." I'd add that it does kind of stop at a halfway point. You need to turn it more firmly so that it is actually locked into place. If you stop at that first "stop" point, it will come loose while you are winding yarn, and you will be frustrated. The unit will clamp to a table, and that is really obvious and easy to do. When you start to wind yarn, thread the yarn through the yarn guide, then put the end into the notch on the spindle, and then wind. I tend to have the yarn go over my arm/fingers to keep an even tension as I wind. If your tension is not fairly even, you get a bit of a wonky ball of yarn that is typically still usable. Just weird. When you use the yarn, you can pull from the center, or from the outside. I typically pull from the center, so when I am finished winding the ball, I usually unwind the last couple rounds, and rewind them fairly centered, and then tuck the tail end under those couple of winds. I love that this can be stored as a single piece, and you can fold the yarn guide back so that it can store a bit more compactly. The accessories that come with this kit are a pretty good quality. The locking stitch markers are a firm plastic, not something that gets all wibbly wobbly. The little scissors click together nicely.
