I've been playing pickleball for a while now, though not ever well. I have progressed from wooden paddles and just trying things out to bundles of basic fiberglass paddles and balls to higher-end paddles that individually cost more than the "multi-paddle plus balls" bundles. I have kids and kids-in-law and grandkids, and not everyone has their own paddles. Thus, I purchased this set to get a couple more paddles. This Amazon Basics set of 2 paddles, four balls, and a carrying case is a starter set, maybe one step up from the basic wooden paddles that I started with. The paddles are nice, light-weight but sturdy, with a decent surface that should allow some level of control. The grips are nice, and there is some additional grip tape you can use to retape a handle that wears out. The balls are standard balls, and should get you started. The case is similar to cases I've purchased before with other sets. Unfortunately, the makers skimped on the zipper. It only has one (another case from a similar set had two zippers), and after just a few uses, the zipper completely fell off (see photo). This makes the case completely useless, and definitely drops my rating. But, given the price, the quality of the paddles, and the four balls, this is still a great starter set, even without a cheap carrying case. I'm happy to have the extra balls and paddles.

Our family is new to pickleball, and we picked up three different brands of paddles to see how they compare. We’re genuinely enjoying all of them! We have:
• Pickleball Apes Harmony S – Pops’ paddle
• Amazon Basics Pickleball Paddle – The grands’ paddles
• Zentrova Carbon Fiber Pickleball Paddle – My paddle Pickleball Apes Harmony S: This one really does stand out as a quality paddle. The textured carbon face (close-up pic posted) gives great touch and helps generate spin, which makes dinks and placement shots feel more controlled. Pops likes that it feels balanced overall. It’s not too heavy yet solid enough for power swings. You can see in the pics that the handle is a bit longer which fits my husband’s massive hand better. It’s definitely on the premium end of what we’ve tried, and you can tell the materials and build quality are definitely a step up from basic paddles. This model is currently on sale at $125.99 with a list price of $179.99 so it’s expensive. It comes with a neoprene cover. Amazon Basics Paddle: Great value for the grands as they’re learning the game. These paddles are easy to swing and light enough for quick reactions, which helps as kids learn the game. They’re much more affordable (currently at $39.98) so if you’re just getting started or want spares for casual play, this is an option. It comes with a case, 2 paddles, 2 indoor balls, 2 outdoor balls and two extra grips. Zentrova Paddle: I am using this one and appreciate how lively and responsive it feels. It’s a little more middle ground to the other two. Considering it’s currently it sells for $36.99 it’s the best value for what you get. It comes with a case, 2 paddles, 2 indoor balls, 2 outdoor balls, 2 extra grips, 2 wrist sweat bands. Value Summary:
💰 Great for beginners/families: Amazon Basics — low cost, still playable for most recreational sessions.
💪 Great performance value: Zentrova — strong feel and responsiveness at a great price.

I play pickleball several times a week and own quite a few higher-end paddles, so I have a good sense of how equipment performs across different levels. This set earns 5 stars based on value for the price, not because it competes with premium performance paddles. These are beginner to possibly low-intermediate paddles. They’re perfectly fine for learning the game, casual play, or getting started without a big investment. If you’re a more advanced player looking for refined control, heavy spin, and high-level responsiveness, you’ll want a higher-performing paddle. The paddle size feels standard and comfortable, with a forgiving hitting surface that’s easy to use. It’s approachable right away, which is exactly what newer players need. The weight is well balanced for recreational play, not overly heavy or too light. The grip feels comfortable and secure in hand. It’s also nice that the paddle is USAP approved, which means it meets official standards. Realistically, you won’t be entering any tournaments with this paddle, but it’s still nice to show that it meets regulation guidelines. The pastel zigzag colorway is colorful, fun, and a little whimsical. It stands out on the court in a good way and gives the set personality. It doesn’t feel boring or generic. Durability seems solid for this price range, and the set includes a bag and pickleballs, which makes it a complete starter package. That’s especially great for couples or friends getting into the sport together. Quality, presentation, and value are strong for what you’re paying. As long as expectations are set correctly, this is an excellent entry-level option. Easy 5 stars based on overall value and package, not on high level performance though.
