Great shade most of the day. Umbrella is taller and so sun may have more chance to reach under early in the day. Height is an advantage for my husband. Umbrella has protected us from rain, maybe a few drops inside all summer. Frame is sturdy and I’d say well built, but will also say I had some trouble lining up the two sections of the pole. The two screws would not align at same time, one or the other would align. Measuring, they never would have. I made one of the holes longer with a drill, you may need to send back. Instructions weren’t complete nor detailed. A mosquito screen for this umbrella is specially designed, will cost $$$. A tad wobbly, but holds up to winds up to about 25 MPH while open, I close it when winds expected are over 15 MPH as a precaution. Bought the ABBA umbrella base, large and filled with sand, secured cross metal bae to ground with stakes that look like corkscrews. Opening and closing the umbrella is easy and efficient, system is well made. Thick, heavy metal parts with good hardware. Overall very happy with purchase. ... show more

The umbrella throws a lot of shade when you have it positioned correctly. Weights are needed to keep the umbrella from toppling when it is opened. Moving the umbrella with 160 lb of weight on the base is not easy. Removing the weights, moving the umbrella, and then putting the weights back on is not fun when one is trying to relax in the shade. One reviewer wrote that they added 2” locking caster wheels to the base of his umbrella to make it easier to move. OK, but they did not mention if they use the weights. The umbrella was easy to assemble, and operates smoothly. I am a little concerned about the four bolts holding the umbrella to the base. They seemed to located too close to the pole to do an effective job. I hope they stand the test of time. Another design flaw is that the handle used to open and close the umbrella moves with the handle that changes the tilt of the umbrella. The upper few positions of the handle may be out of reach for smaller persons. I have seen YouTube videos of other versions of this umbrella where the rotating handle is attached to the pole. I bought one a few years ago and Florida sun won. They look good from a distance but look close and you will see lots of imperfections/poor craftsmanship. Since there was 5 year coverage, I bought another one. The Tan one (pic) is from a purchase 3 years ago that did not stand up to Florida sun. Fabric literally disintegrated. The red one arrived after I sent one back for pieces missing. Amazon took really good care to get me a replacement. When this one arrived, I unpacked it to make sure everything was there, perfect, except for two bolts fell out of the umbrella. After I put it up I found where the bolts came from. Had to improvise a third bolt to try and keep it together. Also, one of the arms was bent during manufacturing compared to after manufacturing due to no imperfections on paint. See pics. Literally looks like fabric was spray painted versus using dyed fabric. ... show more

    • How much wind can this umbrella withstand?

I live in Oregon - where there is wind. I purchased this umbrella, stand and cover - expensive. I called and talked to customer svc inquiring how much wind can this umbrella handle. He referred the question to their technicans. I did get a reply from Angie " Please put it away when windy, so that it'll not damage." If ABBA umbrellas can't handle any wind, they should NOT be selling them. I told my question to my neighbor and he has an awning on his trailer and he said even that comes with a wind rating for the awning. Can ABBA technicans supply a better answer - other than "put it away when windy"? UPDATE: Angie wrote again - they do not test their umbrellas for wind resistance so their umbrellas have no kind if rating regarding wind resistance ... show more

Very happy with this purchase. The umbrella was pretty easy to assemble and the quality of it is much more sturdier then the other ones you get for about $100 bucks. I don't think this one is going to break if a gust of wind accidentally comes along (and it has). Some of the cheaper cantilever ones are plastic important parts of the umbrella and can easily break. We've had two of those break. We live in a high wind area and it's random at times. I do have to run out once the wind really picks up but I don't have to worry if I leave it open and miss the first gust because I feel confident enough this one is going to last and stay together. This looks like this will last many years. The only negative I would say is that you have to buy the base units separately. I would not suggest you put this up without them. And a negative just for us... it's bigger then I expected. It barely fit in the space we needed it in. Much bigger then our 9 foot umbrellas were... two feet really seems to make a big difference (more then I thought). ... show more
