    • Extremely Low Germination Rate
Sweet bell peppers are known for being difficult, so one should never expect a high germination rate. However, my germination rate has turned out to be 10 percent -- 20 seeds planted; 2 sprouts. I'm no novice as I grew up on a produce farm. I expected at least 50 percent germination. No such luck.

Brutal Fact: Not every seed you plant will actually sprout. That's why you are supposed to put 2 seeds into each cell. Then later, you pluck-out one of the tiny plants when both seeds did sprout. (Or like me, you can just plant one seed per cell --- but plant twice as many cells.) The problem with the orange pepper seeds I got is that only about one seed in three sprouted!!! I planted a batch of six, and now I only have two pepper plants. I even re-planted a second batch of three more seeds, and none of them sprouted. I did use a seed germination heating mat, but I still had no luck. The seed packet says to expect 90% germination. I only got 33%. BOTTOM LINE For the price of the seeds, I ended up with two garden-worthy plants. The same money would have bought one slightly larger plant at Lowes or Southern States. So, I did more-or-less come out ahead since I ended up with two pepper seedlings instead of just one. But, by rights, I should have five or six! One is all I really need. ... show more

Turned yellow then started to shrivel, never seen an orange one this year. Very disappointing.

Not new to growing from seed. Low germination yield. Will update in a few months about the final pepper results.
