I have a background in acoustics and radio/recording work. So, I know there's very little that's sound-PROOF. I cringe when I see listings like this calling these sounds-dampening panels sound proof. They do dampen sound (especially voice) quite well. Just don't expect them to block all sound from going through into the next room. I got these for an odd spot in a place I record some videos and voice overs to help reduce reflections. This sheet comes well compressed in a package, but sprung to life in a few minutes after opening the package. They recommend soaking it in water or letting it sit for 2 days. I did let it sit, but it really didn't expand after the first 10 or so minutes. The pyramids are even and the size expected. The back had some cut slits around the borders. I'm not sure what those are there for. For that reason I put these at 4 stars instead of 5. There is no adhesive back on these. I'm pleased with this. It's just what I was expecting.

I wish I would have known long ago how affordable these panels are.. I waisted so much time nailing up carpet to the walls then tacking on egg crates - which took forever and never really worked. Panels like this not only deaden sound outside the room, but also cut echo or reverb so you get a much cleaner sound (so they work for two different types of situations.. These days I don't need to dampen sound outside as much as I need to cut reverberation inside). I was curious how they'd get a large panel like this delivered and found that it's simply vacuum sealed into a smaller package. The instructions recommend soaking the panel in water then wringing out then drying with an dryer or hair dryer - or letting it sit out for 24 to 48 hours. I'm choosing to let it sit out. There's no order so I beleve it's to further expand. The size was pretty arcuate though straight out of the package. I'm in the process of setting up a studio so I have a few more wall treatments to do, so I won't bore you with that, but acoustic panels like this are at the heart of quality sound and are some of the first steps when setting up a recording area - so excited to be doing it right this time!

This was my first venture into soundproof paneling and it has done very well. I do a lot of recording sessions in my home office and couldn’t figure out how to get rid of the echoing without dampening too much. I made sure to keep my setup the exact same after adding this panel to truly see the difference it made. The instructions gave two options for the panel after removing it from the vacuum sealed back; soaking it in water and then putting in a dryer or just letting it sit out for 24-48 hours. I let it sit out in fear that the dryer would somehow damage it and it did the trick perfectly. I am looking to order more now that I’ve seen how beneficial it is having them!

I don't use these acoustic panels in the traditional way, although they work fine for that too (controlling reflections and too much echo in your room, when you hang them on the wall). Instead, my favorite use is to cut them to size and put a piece in the bottom of my bass drum to use as a bass drum muffler. I've found that pillows and blankets tend to deaden the bass drum too much, but this low-density acoustic foam seems to kill just enough of the overtones without making it sound like a cardboard box. I love it for that purpose, and you can take a single piece this size and make enough mufflers for at least 2 or 3 bass drums. That makes it a great bargain at the price when compared to other traditional bass drum mufflers.

Well, I've come to appreciate this panel after being initially unimpressed. It can serve an aesthetic value, but for sound reduction other than reduction at higher frequencies, it really needs other sound reduction treatment behind it. It is not really a "high-density" foam, at least compared with some of my other high-density material. I also would not recommend attaching it to a wall by using spray on adhesive (what the instructions advise). Removing the panel at some later date would destroy the panel and leave a lot of cleanup work. (added:) I did finally find a really good use for this panel, as a means of reducing noise off of one of the hottest reflections surfaces in my studio: the glass sliding door. I've hung it from the curtain rod with "S" hooks (like those used for shower curtains). Its affinity for the higher frequencies really does help tame noise reflections without having to do something more drastic to the glass. This is by far not the worst acoustic control "sound proof" panel I've tested, but I would only suggest getting it for specific uses.
