  • Great if you know what you’re doing. If not, buy higher quality.
Size: 2 Pair
Here’s the deal on these J carriers. They are on the cheap side but if you’re handy and know what you’re doing they work great. They work great for my purposes on a kayak trailer frame I built. Each J comes in two pieces with a top and bottom plate to mount onto the frame/cargo bars. There are four bolts with locking nuts that secure the two J pieces together through the top plate. The bottom plate uses a longer bolt with the hand tightening nut. See picture. When I first put them on, they were solid. I load the kayaks a couple of days later for the first time. and then both the J frame itself is loose and the top plate locking nuts are loose on 5 out of the 8 J bars. I was 8 hours from leaving and very upset that these things wouldn’t work. What was disappointing up to this point is that the bolts are all Phillips screwdriver bolts and not traditional hex head bolts. This made tightening difficult but I thought I had cranked on them sufficiently. Apparently not. However, I figured what the problem with the design is (aside from the screwdriver head bolts). There is a rubber protector that goes around the entire base of the J bar to protect the kayak from the bolts. This rubber apparently had not been compressed enough by the time I loaded the kayaks and the bolts were now loose because the rubber stretched or got squished out between the top plate. I re-tightened the nuts again and appeared to have re-solidified them to my frame. We traveled 500 miles on them bouncing on a Harbor Freight trailer and they haven’t budged. So when you read the reviews that say they come loose, believe it. You’ll just need to pay attention to them and keep cranking on them to get them solid. I plan to replace the screwdriver head bolts with actual bolts to ensure I get a solid tightening before taking the next trip. For the money, I am happy for the purposes I am using them for. If I was putting them on a roof-top of a car and wasn’t handy, I think I would spend the money on a higher quality set. However, a savvy user could make them work well. ... show more

  • Great for my Kayak
Size: 2 Pair
I have an Ascend H10 and this holds that kayak for my Kia Soul. It can be tricky to initially set it up for the widest width, but overall I am happy with my product. Edit: after a week, I had to re tighten the screws. Ill keep using it locally for now. No 50mph+ until im convinced.

  • Works with modifications
Size: 2 Pair
First of all I bought these racks when they had "0" feedback but bought them over a similar product here on Amazon as these were stated as being powder coated. They also looked in the picture that they had thicker foam on the mounting bars than the other ones. Both of these observations seem correct. I am mounting 2 kayaks on a stock Thule 1" roof support rack. The 1" Thule bars are not thick enough for the kit knobs to tighten sufficiently. (see picture). I ended up adding a secondary support bar under the original Thule bars and bolting the two together. This allowed for enough mounting thickness to get sufficient 'bite" out of the kits mounting knobs, or so I thought. The knobs that you tighten the mounts down on the brackets with are plastic with a metal nut. I could not get them to reliably stay tight. Also the bottom kit steel mounting plate is too weak and should be of thicker metal as it deflects and bends. I ended up ditching the supplied plastic knobs and replacing them with stainless nylock nuts and washers. This way, I could use a wrench to tighten them sufficiently and not have to worry about the plastic knobs loosening or breaking. After a long trip with two kayaks, I can say that our 10' Old Town kayaks fit well in these and rode fine during the trip. The racks tend to rotate slightly to conform to the hull of the boats. I'm sure this is due to the fact these Thule bars are only 1" wide. I would recommend that anyone buying this kit ditch the plastic locking knobs in favor of nylock nuts and washers. The fasteners are metric and to replace the knobs, you will need M8 x 1.25 nuts ... show more

  • Don't really fit round or square bars as advertised.
Size: 2 Pair
I haven't figured out, but I will, how to make them more secure on the rectangular Thule bar. I can see that they probably work fine on the wing style because there is enough surface, although they may still not tighten down to the thinner wing all that well. I have to design something so that they won't flip over when I am sliding my kayaks on them. Thinking of going back to my Thule verticals and put the kayaks on their side. ... show more

  • Easy to assemble and mount on the car.
Size: 2 Pair
Assembled and mounted it on my car yesterday. I had to shorten the longer bolts for clearance above the car roof. The brackets are stable and my kayaks tie on securely. It was a good purchase for me.

Do not buy! Ford Escape 2018! Screws were to long! Had to cut screws! Wobbly after finally getting it on for it to brake my factory cross bars! My cross bars literally snapped!
