  • 12-Inch Cast Iron Skillet Review: A Durable Pan with Great Performance and Minor Drawbacks
So, I’ve been trying out the 12-Inch Cast Iron Skillet, and here’s the scoop. This skillet is definitely on the larger side at 12 inches, making it a solid choice for whipping up big meals like steaks, bacon, or burgers. Just be aware, it’s pretty hefty, which might be a downside if you prefer lighter cookware. The weight, however, adds to its durability and overall solid feel. It comes pre-seasoned, which is a great starting point. As you use it more, the seasoning gets better, giving you a smoother, more non-stick surface over time. I’ve used it on my heavy-duty gas stove, and it works beautifully. If you’re using a flat-top electric burner, though, you might find it less ideal. The skillet includes heat-resistant silicone handle covers, which is a thoughtful touch to keep your hands safe from the heat. They’re useful, but they do seem a bit flimsy given the skillet's weight. Just something to watch out for so you don’t accidentally drop it. For cleaning, the plastic scraper that comes with the skillet is handy. It’s effective at removing stuck-on food without damaging the seasoned surface. To keep the skillet in good shape, make sure to avoid soaking it and dry it right after washing. Performance-wise, this skillet really shines with meats and dishes that need even, high heat. It’s versatile enough for frying, searing, baking, roasting, and even broiling, thanks to its oven-safe design. Compared to other cast iron skillets I’ve used, this one stands out due to its size and versatility. It’s a bit heavy, and the handle covers could be more robust, but it’s a solid performer overall. If you’re comfortable with a bit of extra weight and are willing to take care of it, this skillet should serve you well for a long time. ... show more

  • Nice and heavy cast-iron with handles on both ends, cooks great!
I did lightly season it even though it states that it comes pre-seasoned. It is nice and deep, and having handles on both ends is very useful for heavy skillets or woks, so I'm glad this skillet has those. And the silicone grips for the handles work well and are easy to put on or take off. It also comes with a scraper, which is another plus. I have been able to get very good high heat and sear from the pan, and it also has been about as nonstick as you expect from a seasoned cast iron skillet. Of course, cleaning properly and re-seasoning lightly is key to keeping it that way. Very good cast iron skillet with plenty of room for steaks or larger amounts of food. ... show more

  • This 12" cast iron skillet is pre-seasoned and non-stick
Cast iron skillets are the best when it comes to stove top cooking. They heat up fast and distribute the heat consistently to all areas of the pan. However, a cast iron pan can be tricky when it comes to maintaining the cooking surface. That’s why I was hesitant to follow the instructions that stated this 12-inch skillet was pre-seasoned and non-stick. Determined to give it a try, I gave the pan a tiny quick spray of cooking oil and cooked some lean ground beef. It browned up easily. I was making Shephard’s pie, so I added the other ingredients, topped it with mashed potatoes and cheese and put it in the oven to brown for 20 minutes. It was all in one pan, quick and delicious, and I was amazed nothing stuck to the skillet. ... show more

  • A workhorse pan with a few handy accessories
This is a very basic cast iron pan. It has no amazing features that set it apart from other 12" cast iron pans, but it doesn't have any fatal flaws and it comes with some nice to have accessories. To be perfectly honest, I see nothing to set this above a Lodge, Victoria, Tramontina, or any other cast iron pan in the same category. But I don't see anything that really sets it below other pans in the same price range either. The surface is a little rough but completely within normal roughness for a modern cast iron pan that costs less than $100. Roughness like that doesn't really change how well the pan works, but it can definitely have an impact on how long wooden utensils last if you do any scraping. You can either use it until that all fills in, or give it a pass with some sandpaper if it bothers you. Weight: I have a couple of 12" pans and this is right in the middle of the weight. It's heavier than a Field Company 12" but maybe slightly lighter than the Lodge. Cooking behavior: It's cast iron. If you are familiar with cast iron, you'll be familiar with how this works. I am using an electric cooktop and this pan heats up well, sears well, and didn't explode. I didn't re-season it or do anything fancy before testing. Just wash with soap, heat, apply a thin coat of oil to all surfaces, and cook. It works well enough. As good as cast iron pans I've been using daily for years? If you compare the first cooks, yes. If you compare how they cook today, no. I used a lead test kit I got from Amazon, and it did not register any lead. I am not a testing lab, and I am only reporting something I did for my own knowledge, and the results could be wrong without me knowing, but that's always a concern I have with generic cast iron so I thought I would share my results. If you are in the market for a basic 12" cast iron skillet, and want to have some accessories as well, this seems like a reasonable choice. The scraper and silicone handles are worth a few dollars and the price is in line with other similar skillets. ... show more

  • Good quality skillet with silicon handles
I own a lodge 12" cast iron skillet for comparison. This is a bit lighter and thinner than the lodge skillet. While both come with a silicon cover for the pan handle, I hated that I always had to grab another pot holder to grab the other end of my Lodge skillet, as it did not come with another silicon piece for the end handle. So this certainly comes in handy when transfering from the stove top to the oven. And being lighter certainly helps as well. Definitely prefer this to the Lodge. ... show more
