This is something every backyard mechanic needs in their toolbox. There is no other tool that can reliably tell you if the compression is right for the cylinder. It's worth it to have an inexpensive one if you aren't going to need it regularly, but the traditional way to test lawn mower or garden equipment compression was to remove the spark plug and put your thumb over the hole while you tried to turn it over. Picked this compression tester kit to have on hand for checking the compression on my 2 stroke dirt bike. Couldn’t beat the price. The kit isn’t snap on quality but gets the job done for minimal cost. I would recommend it.
