This was easy to assemble and has clear instructions. When winding a large 10 oz cake of yarn, it may take a moment for the yarn in the skein transferring to the yarn winder to flow smoothly due to tension. Just start out slower until the bobbin moves without pausing a bit. No problems with smaller cakes of yarn. It makes beautiful cakes of yarn and I’m happy with my purchase. The media could not be loaded. I had to fiddle with it some but now its great.The tensioner is weak so I used a needle point protector to increase it.The yarn was wrapping around the base so I bent up the bar that holds the yarn about 1/4 inch and that seemed to fix it.The balls produced are very pretty with a waffle design and have a good center pull.I will be keeping this machine,I think as I love to be able to do other things while its winding! ... show more

My wife loves this thing. It’s easy to operate winds a ball quickly every once in a while the yarn gets stuck but a little tug and it’s going again. She said she used to spend a lot of time getting snags out of new yarn now she just keeps on going with no tangles.

I have a large yarn collection and was making my arm fall off cranking cakes by hand for better storage. I figured electric winder would solve my issues, which this, well, partly has. I second other reviewer who mentioned that the winder works quite well with grippy yarns (think of cotton or wool) but quickly turns into a nightmare with acrylic. When the ball gets too large and you make the mistake of not keeping an eye on it to stop it the moment the yarn slips, you'll end up with a mess on the bobbin. I'm trying to figure out the best way to do the acrylics, but I've had slim luck so far. The machine itself is pretty quiet. Speedy-ish but not as quick as hand cranking if you're a speed demon like me. I understand that the machine stops itself automatically after about 4 minutes (annoying but whatever) and also stops if tension gets even a bit too high. I like my cakes pretty firm, so this is a huge downside for me. Also, frogging a project with this or using the winder on a fresh skein etc without having to pull the yarn loose by hand is kind of a no go. It kinda gets the job done, just at the cost of your time, effort and mental health. Update: I first gave it 3 stars. Bumped it down after it's taken me a hour and over six (!) Times stopping the machine to unravel the mess it made. Please pay for my therapy lol ... show more

I wanted to like it, but it's way more annoying to use than a hand crank yarn winder. It says it can wind a cake of yarn in 2 minutes, but I assume that's on the fastest speed; and the issue here is that the bigger the cake gets while on the winder, the slower you need to set the machine otherwise the cake will go flying off the winder! There's also the issue that everytime the yarn tangles or snags or just generally catches, the machine auto stops; a good safety feature, but you then have to move the dial all the way back to off, to turn it back on. The tension arm also is pretty useless, it keeps the yarn in a good position to be wound but you still have to hold the yarn with your hand at a very specific level of tension in order for the cakes to have any sort of firmness and shape. Unfortunately, not worth the $60 I spent on this, and ultimately I am returning it. ... show more

I bought this yarn winder because I needed my yarn to be easily used for my Addi knitting machine. Let me tell you, once you learn about this yarn winder, you won’t want another one. It is easy to use and runs quietly and it does thinner yarns and thicker yarns. It cakes up large skeins of yarn as well. I highly recommend this yarn winder.
