  • Great lock for Smart Home Automation
Color: Black Style: Key-Free Touchscreen
I bought two of these, one for my entry door and one for the back door. I am on a let's make our home a smart home kick right now. Part of that is I want to eliminate all keys except for my vehicle key fob. And, it is also important for me to use one application to control my home, in my case, I am using Apple Home - therefore to some degree HomeKit compatibility is important. This review is about the the installation, lock itself, the Yale Access App, and HomeKit integration. After looking at a lot of locks I landed on this one, the Yale Assure Lock 2 with Wi-Fi. It looks nice, it is keyless, and it is HomeKit compatible. INSTALLATION: Installation was a breeze for me. I am replacing existing keyed deadbolts. So no need to align a door to a frame. The lock itself easily installed in the existing cutouts. I didn't even need to replace the door frame strike plate as my old one works fine. I found the instructions easy to follow, the lock installation of the physical device/lock took me about 15 minutes, most of that was just making sure I did it per the instructions. THE LOCK: At first my thought was this is a $200+ deadbolt and in my head I was comparing it to a normal deadbolt. This is absolutely the incorrect view. This is a computer that has a physical deadbolt it controls. When thinking like that the $200+ price tag is not all that bad. I would say good value for the money. The only criticisms would be that the physical locking mechanism (thing that turns the deadbolt mechanism to extend it into the door frame) is a simple flimsy piece of metal, versus in normal deadbolts it is typically a non-square type of peg to do that job. I am unsure if this really matters at all though, as long as it does the job it is kind of who cares. Another criticism, which if you think about it, would really be an unfair one, yet important to note, is the size of the interior part of the lock is HUGE (comparatively speaking) - reason for unfair - where would the batteries and computer portion go if it wasn't this big? YALE ACCESS APP: The working of the lock portion is good enough. The set up is horrible. You must watch (or scroll) through the installation instructions for each item, just to be able to set it up, would be much nicer to have a skip. My issue is that on one of them I had to do things more than once, and for my second lock, I knew it all already and just wanted to set it up. C'mon Yale, allow the "Skip". HomeKit INTEGRATION: There have been a lot of negative types of comments on this, which I don't understand because I easily added each lock to HomeKit. Scanning of the HomeKit QR code did not work on either lock, this has been commented on a lot with this reviews. For me, I merely manually entered the device IDs and it worked immediately without issue. Granted, you cannot scan the QR which is easier for sure, but not enough to rank lower. All in all, a great purchase IMO, could use some improvements, but really good just the same. Lock Feature rating is 4 stars due to what I comment on, I just expected better, not sure if better is necessary. Tech support I rated 4 stars, this is not by dealing with a tech support staff, it was the only place to rate the app and the setup issues I discussed. ... show more

  • Don't understand the bad reviews!!
Color: Bronze Style: Keypad
This is the second Yale smart lock that I have purchased. The first one failed after 4 years because the clutch was slipping which caused the bolt to not fully retract which meant I needed to use the key to open the door. The reason that I chose Yale and not Schlage is that I have a 2-1/4" thick front door and ONLY Yale offers a smart lock that will work with my door. The installation was a snap until ... I went to enter the entry code. According to the installation/operation manual, you need to have Bluetooth or Wi-Fi capability to do this. However, NOWHERE IN THE MANUAL DOES IT STATE THAT YOU HAVE TO FIRST DOWNLOAD THE YALE APP FOR YOUR IOS OR ANDROID PHONE IN ORDER TO SET UP THE WI-FI!! This is a huge defect in the manual and I am sure that the support people at Yale are overwhelmed by customers calling to ask them how to set up the wi-fi!! Fortunately, I am well acquainted with wireless technology and I knew enough to look for the appropriate app in the Apple store. The lock itself operates smoothly and reliably. I can't comment on the battery life because I have not owned the lock long enough. I would definitely recommend the product. ... show more

  • BUY SCHLAGE INSTEAD. DOORSENSE USELESS
Color: Satin Nickel Style: Keypad
Wifi and Bluetooth connection is very inconsistent even when standing right next to the lock! The doorsense feature is pretty useless since it loses calibration so often that I just stopped using that feature. I bought 3 locks and the TouchPad on one lock has already stopped responding. The battery shows full but it does not light up when you touch it. The only way to wake it up is to press the Yale Lock button multiple till it eventually wakes up. I bought Yale over Schlage for the doorsense feature but since that's useless...I'm in the hole over $800!! Useless locks. Buy Schlage instead. Update: Now 2 of my 3 locks are not responding to touch, only one lock is working. I have 3 locks- front door, garage door, back door. Right now only the front door lock keypad responds to touch. Both back door and garage door locks have FULL batteries and FULL wifi signal but to unlock, you have to press the lock button several times to wake them up. Also the doorsense on them do not work and...the Auto Lock after 1min 30 secs feature is also not working. I have to remember to lock by pressing the Yale/Lock button. Or else, my door stays closed but unlocked! THESE LOCKS ARE USELESS. The wifi is garbage. They show FULL wifi strength but will not even respond when you try to check or adjust the settings. This even fails when you are connected via Bluetooth to the lock...settings will not detect the lock. You have to wait and keep trying for at least 3 - 5 minutes before you can manage the lock via wifi or Bluetooth when in the house. Forget managing them when away!! ... show more

  • Even my wife is impressed! SEE UPDATE IN REVIEW
Color: Bronze Style: Key-Free Touchscreen
We moved into a new house in another state and anticipate many visitors will be staying in our nice basement area. I wanted visitors to be able to come and go at their leisure so I installed this lock on our front door. It is (almost!) everything I could want. It automatically locks after shutting the door... it automatically unlocks the door when I (and my iPhone) return home, I'm able to add temporary codes for visitors, and it connects to the Internet so I can unlock the door if needed when I'm away. The ONLY suggestion I could offer to make this better is a motion sensor that would make the keypad light up when a person approaches. The installation was super easy, just be sure to measure your door's width and hole sizes before ordering! UPDATE: After 6-7 months the unit no longer connects to our wifi. We've changed nothing on either unit. Possibly an update on one caused the issue. Their support desk is laughable. No help at all. Since it isn't on wifi, I can't remotely open the door if needed. Also, and I'm not sure if this is because of the wifi issue, the lock does not automatically lock the door any longer. Frustrating, and I hope a future update fixes the issues. ... show more
