Great Feature Packed Scan Tool
I picked up the XTOOL D5X because I wanted a more than capable basic handheld scanner reader that can easily save you a trip to a local shop or parts store just to get a code read and erased. For weekend garage work and everyday maintenance, even bi-directional testing, it hits a great sweet spot. What makes it genuinely useful is that instead of being locked down to just four basic systems, it does full all-system scans across every module on the vehicle—like the BCM, HVAC, and body electronics. Being able to graph up to four live data streams side-by-side—like fuel trims, O2 sensor voltage, misfires, Mass Air Flow, and throttle position—makes tracking down a random glitch straightforward instead of a guessing game, so if there's a misfire, you can pinpoint exactly which cylinder or ignition coil is causing the issue. Having bi-directional control is an absolute game changer, letting you go in and command components directly to test things like cooling fans, fuel pumps, or EVAP solenoids without tearing parts off the car. Another very handy feature is being able to actuate and retract the electronic parking brake into service mode, so you can do your own brake pads and caliper changes right at home. The maintenance features also handle jobs like ABS bleeding and registering a new battery—something I actually had to do about a month ago, which caused me to have to do a throttle relearn right after the replacement. Built-in CAN FD and FCA AutoAuth support is a huge plus if you work on newer vehicles, and there is also basic OBD-II mode that will communicate with older vehicles from when OBD-II first started. The size of the tool is approximately 7.5 inches long by 4.5 inches wide and less than an inch thick, weighing less than a pound. The screen is right at 5.5 inches diagonally, which is a nice size and easy to see in various lighting conditions, while the silicone grips keep it secure in greasy hands. Another really great feature is that it always shows the vehicle's live battery voltage right on the screen—a handy detail a lot of tools leave out, but having it right there in plain view all the time is a huge plus. It’s also great to be able to download updates directly over Wi-Fi with free lifetime updates and no subscription fees. Just keep in mind that older cars don't have as many modules to talk to, whereas newer cars will have a whole lot more modules and information to look at. Check with XTOOL to make sure your specific vehicle is supported for certain advanced features. For doing your own maintenance and troubleshooting at home, it's a solid, feature-packed, and practical tool that easily earns its keep.

D5X - Another Excellent Scanner for xTool!!
Having used this scanner on several vehicles, including my Lexus ES350, it has proven to be a reliable diagnostic tool. The hardware is a solid mini-tablet with rubberized corners, and the user interface is nice, modern, and intuitive to navigate. It reads and clears codes across the engine, transmission, ABS, and SRS airbag systems, along with real-time live data graphing. It features several very useful special and reset functions, like oil resets, ABS brake bleeding, electronic parking brake service, and steering angle calibration. I used several of the bidirectional controls on the ES350's engine and reset the transmission memory, and in this regard, it performed similarly to their much more expensive scanners. While testing, it displays the car’s battery voltage directly on-screen for safe power monitoring during resets. It charges its internal battery directly through the car’s OBD2 port as well as via the included wall charger, and comes with free lifetime Wi-Fi updates. I’ve also had a great experience with their customer support, receiving prompt and helpful answers to my questions. Overall, it delivers a clean balance of diagnostic depth, active component testing, user-friendly software, and solid support for everyday vehicle troubleshooting.

Perfect size for the at-home mechanic!
I did a quick scan on my 2015 Grand Caravan just to give it a test run. The automatic detection was really quick and scans the main systems fast. The DTC report feature is highly convenient, providing a clear summary of the scan and vehicle information alongside any present trouble codes.
