  • Ultimate DIY-Level Scanner/Tester
This is the best DIY-level OBD2 scanner/tester. I recently tested tablet-style scanners from Topdon and Foxwell on my Honda CR-V and Toyota Corolla. This scanner is the best in terms of coverage, speed, trustworthiness, and usability (on my iPad). The Topdon AD500S runs on Android 6 and has an impressive touch screen. However, it was painfully slow when completing auto diagnosis. It didn't even recognize the SRS system of my 2004 CR-V. The interface for handling communication protocols could be significantly improved. The Foxwell NT604 Elite is a simple, old-school scanner. It was a solid machine and recognized all the systems it claims to. However, the user interface is outdated and reporting a diagnosis result requires going through numerous cumbersome cursor moves. Unlike these, the Anyscan A30M not only recognizes all the systems I wanted to diagnose, but it also reads codes and performs system tests much faster than the other tools. I was particularly impressed with the sophisticated user interface of the app and how it seamlessly performed tests and reported the results. It worked perfectly on my 2004 CR-V (see the picture for the scan result) and 2010 Corolla. Comparing those scanners, I concluded that buying a tablet-style scanner is a silly idea for DIY users unless you don't have any tablets or smartphones at all. The A30M can cover the bi-directional functionalities of $500+ worth tablet scanners at a 1/3 price point. ... show more

  • Every tech needs a "prosumer" scanner to augment the shop one, this is a great one!
I bought this and a Lenovo tablet and rugged cover to use it with, I'm a professional tech (master for 30 years, L1 for 16). This has some cons, I think for what you get it's worth dealing with them. Here are some of the features I really like and bought the tool for. The adapter is pretty nice, not just a rehashed ELM or some other Bluetooth, it has a light, seems to link up and have really good speed. It's bidirectional, and can mostly read every module on a vehicle (I'm in the USA so your experience may differ). It has an autoscan feature that works pretty well. I only get out a factory tool (or equivalent from a big name tool manufacture that costs 6000-9000 US) on occasion, normally I am just pulling a code, then running down some things manually, maybe taking a peek at pattern failures and making a plan of attack from there. I have fixed thousands of cars just with a cheap dongle in my top left pocket and my cell phone, but this has actual features. The autoscan is fast, you can connect, let it identify the car which usually works very well, do an auto scan, maybe take a quick peek at the data for some more info, then when you back out to the main menu save a report which you can email to a customer, or to yourself and prink out for the customer (which is what I do). It's pretty feature packed, does a LOT of what a higher priced tool can do. Data seems pretty good. Are there cons? Of course. The updates take a century to download and install. Sometimes the program itself freezes and you have to manually shut it down to get going again. There is no "Home" butten or link so to get back to the opening menu you literally have to hit the back button however many steps you are away from it, it's REALLY annoying and not well thought out. Some of the more simple tests or activations, e brake retraction etc, do not work well at all (sometimes they just don't). The "voltage" on the dongle... yeah just do yourself a favor and stick a piece of electrical tape right over that useless thing. It's ALWAYS wrong, and I verified this by testing voltage at the connector like ten different times, using a couple different devices (Power probe with a digital, DVOM, etc. Just don't let yourself be sucked down the rabbit hole because of that meter. Trust me I know! All the negatives aside, I don't think you can get a better unit for the price this sells for, and even less money if you already have a tablet, or you want to use a cell phone etc. I have old eyes so I got a tablet. Even with that expense this was totally worth the money. BUT, if you are looking for a professional scanner, this isn't really what you want. I got this to augment the good scanners and have a fast easy interface to get a partial read on what's going on on a better screen, get some bidirectional features, etc. Not as a go it alone scanner. But it's good. ... show more

  • Tried multiple brands of scanner. This is the winner
I'm not going to comment on the other 2 brands of scanners that I purchased before the Xtool as I have written reviews already for them , they were 2 of the popular brands.. Feel free to look at my other reviews to see why I was disappointed and ended up returning them . Had I known how Xtool was going to be, I would have started with them first. Here are the requirements that I had for a scanner when I started the hunt. Support for detailed diagnosis capability on 2004 Jeep WJ Grand Cherokee 2012 Jeep MK Compass 2018 Subaru Outback 2.5 2018 Volvo XC90 t5 I also wanted active functions to release the EPB on the 2, 2018 vehicles that were equipped with EPB. Backing off the EPB is required in order to replace brake pads. I also wanted ABS bleed functionality where available since getting old fluid or air out of ABS is a bit of a pain without being able to activate the ABS pump. I wanted to view detailed live data for all vehicles. My initial search focused on handheld scanners that had their own screen and I wanted to keep it under $500 . The first device from Xtool that I was focused on the was the D7 and then I came across the A30M . I read some reviews and reached to support to confirm functionality for my VINs. Support has been terrific and far better than the other 2 companies I had previously bought scanners from. Once it was determined that the A30M would work for me I purchased. It arrived in 2 days. Here is the beauty of the A30M that got me away from the need for a device with a screen. The Anyscan app includes lifetime updates and it works on anything running Android 5 and above. This allowed me to bust out an ancient 7 year old Samsung 10" tablet that was on the shelf and use it as a dedicated garage tablet. Honestly, this tablet was on it's way to the recycling pile before I found a way to reuse it. I know, android 5 is probably security swiss cheese at this point. I just created a dedicated Google account for the garage and have that on the tablet so there is nothing sensitive there. The Anyscan app is large , 1.1gb, and the updates are even larger. It takes a while to download all of the updates but this is no different than pulling updates for any other scanner brand. Since I had limited storage on the Samsung tablet I just downloaded the common updates for things like ABS, fuel, SAS, etc along with vehicle specific updates for vehicles I regularly work on . There are certain vehicle brands that I will never work on but it's good to know I could download Lamborghini if I ever needed to. After being burned by the 2 other scanner brands I went right to work testing the A30M on my 4 vehicles. I am happy to report that it does everything I need . Every function isn't available on every vehicle but that is with all scanners. I had over 20 back and forth emails with support over various features for the D7 as well as the A30M to check their availability for my vehicles. The emails were all followed up with overnight and there was a clear answer to my question. I've seen some reviews that have complaints about the speed of the scanner. Being that I have a 14 year span of the vehicles at my house I can tell you that the speed of the computer in the vehicle is the issue, not the scanner. Scanning my 2018 vehicles is zippy quick, even for live data. My 2004 Jeep, I honestly thought the app had frozen but it took over a minute to pull live data. This was repeatable across all 3 scanners I have tried. In conclusion, if you are looking for a portable scanner with no subscription fees that can be used across multiple vehicles and even multiple tablets/phones this is the winner. It's also great to know that their is reliable and friendly support available if you need it. A must have for DIY garage ... show more
