  • Not great info on website for a beginner
Style: i1Display Studio
This product is NOT generically easy to use as a beginner. It comes with a tiny quick start user's manual that leaves you hanging and then nothing. No prompts on the installation and use, no decent videos, no downloadable user's manual. If you are a very advanced photographer and know what all that stuff is on there, that's fine, but they're advertising this as a beginner product. UPDATED a week later....... got through to tech support and they seem very knowledgeable and helpful. They told me there was a Youtube channel dedicated to tutorials at Xrite. This should have been made clear upon un-boxing. Also call this number for tech support 800-809-4991 ... show more

  • Inconsistent results
Style: i1Display Studio
Honestly, I've never been amazed by Datacolor Spyder to I decided to give X-Rite a try. All I can say is I'm not impressed by X-Rite either. I have two monitors for my video edit system. Sitting right next to each other. Both had been on for quite some time when I tried to calibrate them. The process was easy...hook it up...measure ambient...hit the button and let it go to work. Calibrated them both (one right after the other) in less than 10 minutes. I thought it was awesome. Until I realized that the monitors did NOT look the same. I mean...that's the point of calibrating, right? Consistent, accurate color. The monitors had different color hue as well as different black/white levels. One of them might be correct...but I don't know which one might be. So it goes back. Photo attached. More pronounced in person. ... show more

  • Dead simple, made a decent monitor great
Style: i1Display Studio
I used to be a multi-display user and obsessed over matching my monitors so I had an old, old, old Spyder colorimeter that is no longer supported. I've been running a widescreen for a while now so I just kind of winged it by eyeball. I recently bought my wife a new IPS monitor that on paper is really nice....in reality it had issues. I could adjust the color balance, but depending on the levels of the scenes in videos it would look red or green. I was informed that this was a problem. Did a lot of research as always and determined that this was probably the best value option. X-Rite has a few higher end models, but looking at side by side comparisons on youtube there were slight deviations between all three and none of the differences were massive. The biggest difference between this and the more expensive ones are the ability to calibrate monitors at above 2000 nits (I don't have that need) and speed. I will do this one time unless I need to format the system...just being honest. I got plenty of time to save almost 50%. This does work with DisplayCal. I used the software that comes with the device as well (real hassle to find online by the way). The X-Rite software is faster, really easy to use and does very well. I'm sure that there is probably something that DisplayCal does a bit more accurately just based on the sheer number of measurements, but 99% of us won't see it and we'd have to measure it somehow. I was happy with my widescreen monitor, but after calibration it is noticeably better. Did my tablet as well and that was a massive difference. We have about 10 computers in the house between the family.....everything is getting calibrated. ... show more

  • Color Calibration Produced Totally Weird Results
Style: i1Display Studio
Running this system - color calibrator plus the i1Studio software - gave my iMac monitor a very strange slate-green cast. I spent hours on my own troubleshooting and looking up solutions online and from the manufacturer's website to no avail. I then spent about half an hour with the manufacturer's tech support, who guided me through completely uninstalling the app -- including going deep into many normally hidden folders to manually remove items -- and then reinstalling it from scratch. The results were the same. My eyeballs do a better job -- I mean, I know that fresh snow is not supposed to appear grayish-green. ... show more

  • Easy Journey to (color) Confidence
Style: i1Display Studio
When I am editing my photos I want to make sure I have good color and I'm not wasting my time getting them to look 'just right' when it is not accurate. I ALSO don't want to get prints back looking totally different than I saw them on my screen. So I used the i1Display studio to calibrate my monitor, and it was way easier than I thought (Im used to having my husband do stuff like that so I was unsure of how smooth it would go). I was also surprised to find out I wasn't too far off, but I could tell the vibrant colors looked better and brighter in the midtones. It also took away a warmish tint and made it a bit cooler and more neutral. That was exactly what it needed. [Funny how we recognize when its fixed but can't identify exactly what it needs to BE fixed!] That's why we use these devices! Anyway, the Start Here Card was a friendly way to start to download the software to walk you through before you get sucked into the abyss of tiny type on the instruction manual! AND the site shows the manual on a handy link too and its way easier to read on screen (bigger). Still in 8 languages but oh well! haha. So first thing, I watched a 4 min video that described the goal and what it does and felt good about that... not too difficult and it assured me that the software would guide me through. Which it did! I downloaded the software and had to restart the computer...then I started up the app and the first thing it did was make me update the software (was it really updated in the last 30 seconds?) kinda aggravating to do it AGAIN and then restart the computer again. But I remained calm..... LOL Anyway, it was easy sailing after that and I was guided each step. Most screens were set for me already (the software KNOWS what kind of equipment is plugged in!) #BONUS! and when I had a choice, it spelled out the 2-4 choices and when or why I would choose that one. I was told to go for D55, not D65 for my white point, so I had to choose Manual to do that but even then, it was easy to feel confident about each choice. And each screen gave you a BLUE button to choose next. Very Clear and hard to make a mistake! I never felt like I didn't know what to do next! The "Puck" (or Gadget or Doo-Dad) was very easy to use and took only a few minutes to go thru all its colors and do its thing.... I was delighted with how simple the whole process was! At the end it told me it needs to run a "tray"... (who knows what that is ) But it brought up a series of images to view the change. It was good to see the comparison of before/after so I could see how it fine tuned the colors and tones. Then it saved the profile automatically where it is supposed to be and said it will remind me in a few months when I need to do it again! Now that's customer service! LOL. Im just delighted it was a painless process and now I have confidence that my color is accurate and my prints should match what I see on screen. Definitely a good experience and they've made it easy for a non-technical person to install and use a technical software product without overwhelm or frustration. BTW, this was on a Mac. ... show more
