I desperately needed a big plane for a project I am working on. Having read some reviews on the WoodRiver line, I decided to give one a try. It just so happened that on the day it arrived, I received a #5 Sweetheart that I bought at auction. So I sharpened them both up, did a little minor tuning and put them to work. The Sweetheart was up first and clearly demonstrated why it is still the plane that everyone is trying to copy. Then I tried the WoodRiver and what a surprise. It was every bit as smooth and easy as the 1910 - 1912 Sweetheart. It felt good in the hands, the heft was perfect and the balance was dead on. It was everything that I could have hoped for in a plane. The work that I have done with it speaks for itself. For any future hand planes, I will look at WoodRiver sooner rather than later. ... show more

This plane is made beautifully. I say usable out of the box as it did produce a decent shaving right out of the box but after putting a micro bevel on the iron it produces .0015" shavings consistently and flattens to a beautiful finish. The chip break was dead flat and did not need dressing.

I liked that I was able to plane successfully before I put a secondary bevel on it. I loved it right out of the box. works great with shooting board. if you have never used a plane, this one is set up well enough to become familiar with how one should work properly. Required a little honing and it was off to the races. The machining seems precise and clean. Using it to prep faces for joining guitar bodies. Works great and is much quieter than a power jointer. Not the same tool in some regards but I can push this thing at night or early in the morning and not upset anybody. I have some smaller older planes that do what they're supposed to and a couple that don't. I haven't ever tried the more expensive planes and do not intend to. ... show more

I'm generally happy with this plane, although I was disappointed to find that the right side of the body was not quite 90-degrees from the sole. This plane was purchased to use with a shooting board, and I'm right handed, so this was a problem. I don't have the tools needed to fix this, but I was able to apply a strip of painter's tape to the shooting board that looks like it fixed the problem. I'll just have to be sure to check the fit every time I use the shooting board. Considering the price, this was pretty disappointing. With regard to the remainder of the device, I love the way the frog attaches to the body and how the two adjustment screws engage. Very clever and so much better than other planes I've owned. The blade is thick and sharpens nicely. I purchased the star-shaped blade adjusting add-on from Cosman, which is a really good addition. When adjusting the blade depth, this adjuster engages with very few turns when changing directions on the blade depth. It's a fine plane - I'd purchase another - just wish the right side was more precisely square to the sole. ... show more

This is a great value hand plane. Just to be honest. This is the best and most expensive hand plane I have used. However, I have flattened, squared, and jointed 20 12x12 southern yellow pine boards for my workbench. This is a high quality tool that if properly cared for will last a lifetime. Easy to set up and fine tune right out of the box. Small enough to use as a smoothing plane yet long enough to use as a jointing plane.
