  • Best value in bench planes
Size: #4
I love this plane, so now I own 2. I bought the first one a couple of years ago and upgraded the iron(blade) to a thicker IBD blade. This new one seems to have a thicker iron than the first and there is no chatter. The sole is dead flat and I didn’t need to do anything except take it completely apart to check all of the parts, wipe off the packing grease, ease the edges of the sole with a fine file, and put sharp edge on the blade. I use the Rob Cosman sharpening method (see robcosman.com) with 1000 and 16,000 grit Shapton stones and was slicing 1,000th” ribbons off of hard maple 15 minutes after unboxing the plane. The #4 is a very versatile plane and I bought the second one for teaching woodworking to autistic children, which I do as a volunteer at The Otto Specht School. All classes have 1 to 3 students and I would have bought a third one if I could afford it. I demonstrate with a WR #5 1/2 and the students follow along easily with the #4’s. Woodworking with hand tools is very therapeutic for people with ASD and the students love it. Sub-par tools would be very frustrating for them to work with. All of my planes are Wood River v3 or LN planes, which cost a lot more but are excellent. Wood River has done a wonderful job with engineering and design, and the bubinga handle is smooth and comfortable in my large mits. ... show more

  • Worth the money
Size: #4
So if you're looking at woodriver planes, clearly you're wanting something better than you have already or just a really nice first plane. You've probably heard about Lie Nielsen and Veritas and how good those are. I don't own those but I do own 4 woodriver planes. I've worked with all manner of inferior planes and like you wanted something better. I looked at the Stanley and benchdog at my local rockler store. Then looked at and agonized over spending $170 for a woodriver. I decided to just do it and haven't regretted it. Both my #4 and #5 are the nicest planes I have ever used. Does it hurt to spend that much money on a plane? You bet. But the finish is beautiful. The adjustments are very precise and the blade holds an edge well. Was it worth it? To me yes. That's why I own 4 different woodriver planes now. Someday I'll buy a Lie Nielsen just so I can see what all the fuss is about. ... show more

  • Quality plane worth the money
Size: #4
Works like a charm. It took a few tries to hone in on sandwiching blade and chip-breaker. But after set correctly, cuts through like butter. Adjustment knob and left/right lever are very good and respond well.

  • Amazing Plane, Easy & Fast Setup, Spectacular Results
Size: #4
The #4 showed up two weeks ago, and I first needed it tonight. I set it up in about 10 minutes following the youtube video "Box to Bench, Rob shows what to do with a new Woodriver plane" by Rob Cosman. It takes even shavings, as thin as I'd like them (like tissue paper, as a test), and left a knotty pine 2x4 scrap as smooth as if it already had a sprayed poly finish. My #5 1/2 shows up Monday, and I've got a #7 on my list :-) ... show more

  • Nice Bench Plane
Size: #4
I have a # 3 Millers Falls I use and the WoodRiver # 4 is just a little heavier for that smoother finish on the Walnut stock I have. This plane has very nice adjustments and is easy to use. I did hone the blade on a diamond based sharpener before use although it is pretty sharp right out of the box. Great bench plane. ... show more
