I bought this for camping, for splitting the firewood purchased from the campgrounds. I used it this summer and loved it. It splits the wood down easily to kindling size, which is great for starting the fire. It's a lot easier than trying to use a small axe or hatchet.

This is a very handy thing to have next to my woodshed. My small outbuilding that I work from home in has no heat source except a wood burning stove, so I am making fires in there every day of the winter. This has come in very handy to get those sort of too big pieces quickly split into smaller sections - either for kindling or just a quick single split. However, I had a hell of a time splitting some of my hardwood using this, as the hammer it comes with is not hefty enough. Also, I wish the thing was taller, so that you can balance longer pieces in it. This would probably be perfect for grocery store pre-split split wood that you just want to break into small kindling, since it tends to be softer and already in more uniform shorter lengths than my random firewood from the forest. I found it best to first hold the piece over the wedge to make an indent in the bottom of the wood by tapping the wood into the wedge gently, and then once it can balance on the wedge like that, give it a big hit to split it. It seems a lot safer to use this thing than swinging an ax, so probably a good activity for kids, or uncoordinated adults.

the Wood Splitter is a decent tool for those who need to split kindling occasionally and don’t mind putting in some extra effort. However, if you have larger logs to split or need a more durable and portable solution, you might want to consider other options. For light, occasional use, it’s a reasonable choice, but it has its limitations. After a few uses, I noticed some wear and tear, and I’m concerned about how long it will hold up with regular use. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s something to keep in mind if you plan on using it frequently.

This splitter works great. It could probably be sharpened a bit with a file, but current usage hasn't seemed necessary. I put a few pieces of walnut much longer than recommended through it and they split after a few hammer strikes. It will work best when anchored to a stump or plank. I could see just screwing it into a short length of 2x10 and using body weight to hold it still if you don't have a heavy offcut to use. On my first tries, before mounting it to a solid point, I used my foot to hold the edge of the base, which worked great but does present a hazard of the splits striking your foot. The only negative for this kit is that the hammer is barely acceptable. I'd be happier to see a better hammer included for slightly more money, or no hammer for a few bucks less. I'm pretty sure the handle is just a 1" steel tube and does very little vibration damping. But hey, it works, and is a fine option if you don't already have a mini sledge.

I already have a larger kindling cracker and thought this would be great for taking smaller pieces and breaking them into smaller pieces - works like a champ! One thing to note: any kindling cracker will have trouble with knotted wood or wood that hasn't been aged enough. They will split green wood but may struggle and you really should age your wood before burning. I like that this is lightweight and easy to put away when not in use. That said, the cover is pretty pointless to me. Weather will destroy that before it destroys the metal itself. I appreciate that they included mounting bolts - one less trip to the hardware store. I need to find a couple larger logs to mount this and my other splitter to. It does make a big difference to have it mounted to a solid surface. I tested with aged cherry and it split with ease. The included sledge is nice but I prefer a heavier 5 pound sledge I already have in use. I'll get a lot of use with this using my smoker. My larger splitter, while a beast, is more difficult to split smaller pieces. This will be great for those needs and I'm looking forward to more use.
