  • Great Picture Quality. The camera can see better than I can at night.
It really is a great dashcam and backup up camera. The picture quality is amazing and when it's pitch black at night, the camera has a great viewing ability. Truly amazing. I had a friend yesterday after installing it that it looks like watching a movie. I know installing it is intimidating and I had a friend help me but it's worth saving $250-$400. Here are steps and what to look out for: 1.) Remove passenger side A arm, that was on my side on my ford f-150 2007 for the fuse box. 2.) Remove fuse panel and use a circuit tester to look for 10 and 15 amp rated fuses. The yellow wire with the fuse is your constant power aand the red wired fuse is your 12v. Test with key on and key off either side of the 2 holes on the fuse. Make sure to ground the black wire to a bolt because it can't be a painted surface for a good connection. Dashcam fits over the rear view mirror with straps or adhesive tape. 3.) Remove tailight on passenger or driver side, depending on your vehicle. Run other end of camera under the frame (mine was the frame due to bring a truck) with zip ties up until above the running board. Remove weather stripping rubber next to seat and floor of front seat. Poke hole where wire junction is in the rubber to feed wiring up into the car/truck. (Easier than removing interior floor board). Run up A arm and tuck behind visor. *Don't run into hole by foot pdeals for 2 reasons. There is a hot exhaust manifold and there is barely enough length of wiring*. 4.) Poke firmly to get a good contact with circuit tester on reverse light wire. Should be one of two. Put car in reverse, take key out with emergency brake on or have someone else reverse the car while testing it. 5.) Use T-taps and attach wire (believe its red) that's not black to the 12v wire you tested with a circuit tester. Attach black wire to ground. Use adhesive tape and in my case for best visibility, zip ties to back up camera. May want to use a fuse relay in case of a short in the future to avoid damaging wiring harness. Run up A arm and plug into rear view mirror dashcam. You're all set! I hope this helps as that's what I want instead of a video because it's intimidating for the first time. ... show more

  • Install review: Black magic and not a DIY -it is the car's fault
When I was a teenager, I used to install stereos and other electronics in cars for extra money. The experience of installing this camera reminded me why I quit doing that. Working on car electrics and running wire is still a nightmare. Kudos to the manufacturer for providing a complete kit. It even has a plastic pry bar to loosen or remove plastic trim. Removing the trim is where the problems start. The clips used on cars are awful. When they come loose, it gives a massive CRACK sound making me think something has broken. I broke only one clip. Getting a replacement will be a struggle since I saw white, black and green colored clips on the 3 panels I had to pull open. The clips are different for each panel. The clips themselves consist of plastic, a spring and dark magic. They are evil, and a broken one will release a curse on the owner: How to replace it? I started with the backup camera. I made the mistake of trying to run the cable from the back to the front. Plug the cable into the display and run the cable toward the back. The connector at the back is smaller and will fit through smaller spaces. My Honda CRV has a horizontal spot above the license to mount the camera. THERE ARE NO EXTRA HOLES IN YOUR CAR FOR RUNNING CABLE! I had to drill some holes for the backup camera wire and so will you. The steel used in cars is very hard. I broke 3 small drill bits making pilot holes and two ½ inch drill bits. Titanium drill bits my eye! There is one wire at the back that wants to connect to the backup lights. When the backup lights come on, it will tell the system that the image from the rear camera should appear on the display. I was successful with my 2013 CRV, but it requires special skills to make that connection. In more modern cars it may not be possible at all. In older cars, a simple switch will provide 12v to the light to turn it on. More modern cars use CAN bus. 12V is always provided to a digital receiver which is part of the light assembly. A digital message tells the light to turn on or off. Without the backup light connection, you can manually switch to the backup camera from the display. I was able to connect it up because I have very good wiring skills from being an electronics engineer for 40 years. If your wiring skills are not well developed, do not attempt to connect this wire to the backup light. Either get someone skilled or leave it unconnected. It took me 3 hours to install the backup camera. In another half hour, I installed the GPS antenna on the right side of the dash looking up through the window and routed power to the main display. My patience is exhausted. I don’t think I will get the special power adapter that allows the unit to operate when the key is removed from the ignition. I have had my fill of running wires in the car, and I don’t want to do it again for a very long time. ... show more
