  • Perfect Unit for My Needs
I just upgraded to this USB Type-C unit from the previous unit. I have it on my 2022 Kona as it is the first car I've bought brand new. Only 16 miles on it when I got it! The video quality on this unit is absolutely amazing. I caught an accident on my rear cam and gave the footage to the police. They were impressed with the clarity. I've caught several "interesting" instances of other people's driving and the detail from the front camera is *chef's kiss.* Thankfully I haven't had to use footage for an accident I've been involved in but I feel much more secure knowing that the situation will be recorded well for insurance purposes. The curvature of the front and back camera helps catch blind spots I feel other cameras might miss. The installation takes a little work and the instructions are a little...fuzzy but the hardwire kit was easy to figure out with a friend and i much prefer it over having the unit plugged into my 12 volt. Do they still call those cigarette lighters? Lol The inclusion of the wire holders is a nice touch from the previous unit if someone were to stick with powering the unit from the 12 volt. The RedTiger app is simple, straightforward, and marks the recorded videos "F" and "R" for front and rear to easily distinguish between the two. The old app didn't do that. The GPS is accurate and would help cover me if and when it was needed. My only complaint is how long it takes to pull a video but I have my camera set to record 5-minute intervals so that's a lot of data to download. I guess it's not too bad considering that. I look forward to many years with this unit and feeling more protected knowing I'll be able to show the true story if something were to happen. ... show more

  • Good cam, great service.
Executive summary: good cam; small with clear images; neat windshield install solution; top-drawer customer service; ok 3rd party free Android app. A keeper. If you want a 23-minute in-depth review, and I mean in depth, search on YouTube for Jabber Tech, "RedTiger WiFi GPS Dash Camera..." This video has long sequences of drive video -- day, dusk, night. Jabber's drive videos match my experience around clarity, automatic light compensation, and audio. Mounting RedTiger supplies 2 pieces of what they call electrostatic film that goes between your windshield and the 3M super-sticky adhesive on the GPS module. (You just slide the camera off the GPS module during installation.) The film has moderate but very effective adhesive on the windshield side. Repositioning the camera without the film would result in destruction of the 3M sticky. Repositioning with the film involved simply peeling the film off the windshield and re-sticking. I'm now on my 3rd reposition. Position 1 gave me a viewpoint that contained a whole lot of the rear view mirror mount on the left of the image. This cam is REALLY wide angle. Moved it an inch or so to the right, thanks to the film, and no more mirror mount close-ups. Then I discovered that the dotted top-of-windshield shading on my 2003 Toyota Avalon's windshield seriously blocked acquisition of GPS satellites. My theory is that the dots are metallic frit burned onto the glass rather than plain old silkscreen ink, and the metal content is absorbing/blocking the GPS signals. Position 3 now puts the GPS module on clear glass about 1/32" inch below the dotted shading. GPS signal acquisition is now as fast as it's going to be (takes some time) and once locked in, it stays locked in for the duration of the trip. My experience is that, after car start, it's about 3 minutes of driving or about 2 miles before the GPS location and ground speed kicks in. Controls WIth a camera this small, there's no real estate for tons of buttons. This means that every button has multiple functions that depend on what you're doing at the moment. The manual, which is very good, is about as clear as you can get around this, but you should expect a bit of a learning curve. The only way out is through -- spending time working out how to alter settings, take a snapshot, manually turn off the camera, find the configuration of the many options, and so on. Alternatively you can just go with the factory defaults: video begins recording when power reaches the camera, drive segment files are 1 minute long (there is no lag between each successive MP4 1-min. file), resolution is 3840 x 2160 pixels at 30 frames per second. Customer service: Via email. It is top-drawer support whose access point in the US is in Colorado. I found RedTiger's service VERY responsive and got replies in 12 hours. In my case, the manual was a tad ambiguous around repositioning, whether you pulled the GPS sticky off the film or the film off the windshield (it's the latter). Rose immediately sent me new 3M stickies and electrostatic films free, so I'll be able to reposition this cam till the cows come home. SD Card The manual recommends at least a Samsung 64 GB micro SD Class 10 U3 card. I'm finding that a (cheaper) Best Buy Samsung 128 GB Class 10 U1 card is working just fine. The manual cautions you not to turn to eBay or Amazon for the micro SD to avoid getting stuck with poor-performing fakes. The Android App To connect, I found I had to get away from any WiFi that I already had saved. In may case, this was a distant corner on an out-of-the-way strip mall parking lot. It's cool to see what the camera's seeing and to do rudimentary file diving. But transmission is too slow for downloading files from the F7N to the Android. For that, you're going to want to pop the micro SD card out and use a card reader, either OTC for the phone or USB for computers. Don't drop the card in your car because there are dozens of nooks and crannies for it to hide itself. It never falls in plain sight. As me how I know.... Summary I think it's a really good camera at what has become a low-middle range of price. I spent a long time watching those YouTube car crash / idiot driver videos, looking at the time stamps at the bottom of the images, figuring out which brands had the best images. Then, because I'm cheap, I cross-ruffed against price -- the high-end cams are about as good as this RedTiger F7N... for 2.5-3x the RedTiger price. ... show more

  • Rear camera is an exterior mount NOT rear window so complicated for Jaguar F Pace install
My first dashcam (I have been using an android app (Droidcam) on my phone for a few weeks which worked well as a test run but made the phone run hot). Unit is smaller than I expected with a screen so you can see what it sees. Other buyers had some issues ... here is my take (I skipped the picture quality aspects as they are covered by other reviews - its actually 2k but fine for my purposes) 1) Front camera mounting location is important - my car (Jaguar F Pace) has a specific area where you must mount electronic devices that need to have an external signal (eg toll passes - I found this out to my cost!) This is a black dotted area around the rear view mirror. Anything mounted outside this area gets flaky reception - this camera has GPS so needs to be mounted in the designated area. I took some time to work out where to put the camera so I could a) access all the buttons (both sides of the unit), and b) access the SD card - left hand side as you look forward. I ended up mounting it just to left of the rear view mirror (I am in the USA) - 2 pieces of electrostatic sheet are provided so you can glue the mount to those rather than the windscreen. Take your time! It is pretty unobtrusive but I can get at it easily including the button for taking a still picture... 2) Connecting to the unit - the unit uses a Wifi signal NOT bluetooth (same procedure as a smart bulb) so you need to connect to this. App is OK (I had no issues with Android) - connected fine. App install bombed out the first time but worked fine 2nd time. I had to allow a couple of permissions (write images etc) - all standard from my POV. 3) Installing rear camera - one thing I did not realise when I bought this was this is an EXTERNAL camera and is designed to be mounted on the number plate frame - having spent some time looking at how I could do this on my car I decided it was too complicated (if not impossible due to sealed units on the trunk) and opted to buy a rear window mount. I already have a reversing camera at the recommended location and this mounting position is too low for my purposes (eg if I have a small hitch attached the camera view would be blocked) Your car may be fine - suggest you check install BEFORE purchase or buy the window mount - this is the one I got. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09Y2RS7F3/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A2D03PT3N1OAWT&psc=1. Red Tiger should probably add this cheap piece of plastic as another option or just include it in the kit. 4) Running the wires - there are 2 tools provided which allow you to push the wire into the trim around the window etc. Dead easy. Adhesive clips are also provided but I didn't use any. Front cable is 12 feet which is a little short for my purposes. USB C so ambidextrous on the right angle connector! 5) Connecting to power; The power unit is a gigantic cigarette lighter plug with an added USB port but it was just too big and the wire was about 2 feet too short for my car so I used a high powered double USB socket cigarette lighter plug and bought a 15 foot USB A to USB C cable. NB the jaguar F pace usb port did not provide sufficient power for the unit (it hooks into the infotainment system) so this was not an option in my case. Looking at hardwiring videos its all pretty straightforward - you need a multimeter to work out which fuses are on when the car is off (for 24 hour power) and which ones you can use (eg DONT use the airbag or any security circuits!). Seat power seems the easiest to use but check your car manual and other recommendations! . You need to buy a couple of wires to piggy back onto the non essential (but permanently ON) power supply in the fuse box. 6) Functionality: I really like the unit - small but well made - clear picture in the little screen and picture in picture for the rear view. Pretty intuitive - (power button for back and then middle right button for select and the other 2 buttons navigate the menus). In settings I turned sound OFF, GPS ON and WIFI On (whilst I tested the phone connection). If I had to grab images I would probably just pull the SD card and read it in my laptop. The 128Gb Samsung sd card comes with a reader chassis. 7) Recording time: It looks like the sd card needs be formatted every few weeks (there are settings options for reminders for this) and the 128Gb supports about 8 hours of travel. When the card is full is overwrites and you can specify the loop timing. - I set it to 5 minutes from memory. All in all a good purchase - I would recommend the 128Gb card bundle and grab a rear window mount if you don't want to fiddle with running the cables through the rear of your car. Dinged 1 star for 4k and lack of rear window mount and the app is not great as others have pointed out. UPDATE 11/14/2023 - I was stationary, waiting to turn right onto a main road when the driver behind rammed into the back of me. Fortunately there were no injuries. The rear dashcam captured the whole event as well as the driver getting out of the vehicle confirming who was driving. I uploaded the video to the insurance company to prove my statement and am currently getting my vehicle fixed ($5K of damage). Apparently, I will get my deductible refunded if the other driver is found to be at fault (this is VERY clear with the video). The only tricky element was reducing the size of the video to something that could be emailed or uploaded (seems like 20Mb is the limit for the latte with my insurer). All in all very happy with the purchase and the quality of the video. ... show more
