Makes Ice - Keeps It Frozen & Ready - Great Value for the Price

This works exactly as it should. It makes ice cubes and keeps them frozen. It doesn't make them super fast, and it is a little loud when the first ones come out, but that's OK because it keeps them frozen and isn't making ice cubes constantly (the way I am using it). I flipped my door to open the opposite way and I appreciate being able to do that. The top was a little scratched by the door bolts from when the door was originally installed at the factory but I am OK with that, too. My refrigerator columns don't have ice makers and the ice maker in my drawer freezer takes up the entire bottom drawer and so I am not using that. This ice maker allows me to have ice nearby in my garage entry room (next to the kitchen). I had a countertop ice maker but they can't keep the ice frozen so you can't use them all the time and they are very sensitive to country water - I had to use bottled water in mine. This ice maker is exactly what I wanted and the price was lower than I expected.

Doesn't come with what you need to install it, directions are worse than useless. Terrible support.

I bought this ice maker to replace a Whynter Ice Maker (same model number) that came in the house I bought. It recently crapped out (made really loud noise), so I decided to get the same unit as it worked fine and would fit the space I have. However, this unit does NOT come with the parts you need to install it. The directions literally say "have this device installed by a professional plumber" with no directions. Because I was replacing the same model number I assumed I could just plug it in and it would work. HOWEVER, my old unit has a metal screw in piece to attach the water hose to the back of the unit. The NEW unit does not have this. There is literally a piece missing. You push the tube in, but there is nothing to keep it in place so once you turn the water on it pops out and water is EVERYTWHERE. So, annoyed, I pay $150 for a plumber to come out and install it. First thing he does is ask for the installation instructions. As mentioned earlier, there ARE NO INSTRUCTIONS so he had no clue how to install it. So, basically, I paid $465 for an ice maker and $150 for a plumber and still nothing is working. Whynter customer service is a JOKE. You call, listen to a long message, then they tell you to expect really long wait times and send an email instead. They specifically tell you that asking about your service order will DELAY them getting back to you. To recap: I paid over $600 for an ice maker to replace like for like what I had... and have nothing to show for it. The parts you need to install do not come with the unit, there are no instructions to help you (or a plumber) figure out to install it, and I have no clue when (or even if) I will hear back from Whynter customer support. AVOID AVOID AVOID!

Whyter out door in-cabinet ice maker

I purchased this unit almost 6 months ago and was extremely happy with its performance, but then it stopped working. Since we were going away for several weeks, I shut it off. When we returned, I turned it back on and checked on it several hours later and it was back making ice again. Just prior to dinner, I opened up the ice maker door and steam poured out. It red hot inside and the ice bucket was filled with water. After a quick call to Amazon, they told me it was a 3rd party sale and would get me over to Whyter technical support. I was all set for a “sorry I can’t help you”. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to speak to very lovely person who politely.asked me to explain the problem and take a few pictures of the front & back of the unit and include the purchase & shipping info. She then asked if I would remove it from the cabinet, plug it in and have it go through one ice making cycle and call her back. I called her back and tol her that it did not get hot or cold. It appeared to be dead. She thanked for the info, asked for my shipping address and said they would ship me out a new one within the next few days. A day later she e-mailed me to tell me the unit was ready for pick up and the next day she told me that it was picked up and gave me the tracking info. You never like having a problem with your purchase, but it’s not often that you can say that getting a resolution was quick, efficient and painless. It was. Thank you, Whyter,

Great buy so far

UPDATE!! fast forward to March 2023. It recently just stopped making ice on me. It will make ice for several hours then the whole thing freezes and wont make anymore. Have to thaw it out and start it over. Very disappointed. I did purchase the extended warranty so we shall see how honorable they are when i contact them to come fix it. Fingers crossed. I will update on that as well. So now it wont make ice at all, even after thawing. I did purchase the 5 year warranty when I got the ice maker in 2019 for $72. Glad I did. Amazon sent me a gift card for the full cost of the ice maker that I paid in 2019 (minus taxes). So in all, with the $72 insurance, cost difference of old maker versus new and taxes, Im basically getting a new ice maker for $110, plus I purchased the new insurance and it was only $11 this time, but with Allstate and not Assurant. Hopefully they are as reliable. So far so good!!! Has been plugged in and on for over a month and its amazing! This thing puts out some ice and it's the good ice too. However, I do foresee having to defrost it maybe every 2 months or so. No biggie, just turn off and put a towel inside as mentioned in previous reviews. Mine is outside in the humidity too, Louisiana!

Great ice maker - but died after 2 years

I searched and searched everywhere for a drain-less, under counter ice maker, and this was the only model I could find. So I bought it and installed in my wet bar. Installation was easy - just used a standard ice maker hose (like you use on a refrigerator) and plug it in to an electrical socket. The first day, it filled up completely within 24 hours. After several months, it is running great. The ice is in half-moon shaped cubes, and is somewhat soft. The compressor kicks on periodically to keep it frozen, but since I have it under the counter, I barely hear it (I don't hear it at all when the TV is on). When full, it holds a decent amount of ice (I'd say about one Igloo Playmate cooler full). I can't believe these are not more popular. I don't understand why all other ice makers have drains - so you make the ice, then slowly watch it melt away. Not efficient and the potential for plumbing/leak issues is high. This little ice maker is simple, easy, and cheap. Highly recommend. UPDATE: Bought in 10/2013, in 05/2016 it died. Started making very loud rattling noises any time the compressor kicked on. I took it apart and reassembled, finding nothing loose. That stopped the rattling for half a day, then it began again. It is something inside the sealed refrigerant system, so I can't repair it. Had to throw it out. Should have figured it would not last long given the price compared to competitors. Ran perfectly up till then, so if you're willing to buy something you know will die 2 years later, buy it. Lowering from 5 to 3 stars due to lifespan.

Keeps you in ice

Really good ice maker. Bought same model about ten years ago and replaced it this year. New model hasn’t jammed at all. The other one did every couple weeks. This one may be a little noisier, but looks and functions great. Easy to defrost and clean. I bought an inline water filter and that may be why it hasn’t jammed any.

Just a plain bad experience

The Whynter UIM-155 ice maker arrived on the date we expected it to. The packaging was pretty good although after removing it from the box we noticed the black side panel was dented. The padding on the side of the packing box was very thin but the double box probably makes up for it. After the machine was installed to our plumbing we anxiously waited for the first batch of ice. twelve hours later there was no ice and the internal temp was 80 degrees. Anyone can get a lemon, right? I contacted the Whynter company directly and after leaving two answered messages on two different days finally got through to a live person. She was pleasant but not much help. I was told that I could only get in touch with support by email. My first email message was answered fairly promptly. I was told that water pressure, or the lack of water pressure was probably the problem. I was also told that if the freezer was getting cold inside it was working correctly (duh). I wrote back telling them that my refrigerator ice maker was working fine with our current water pressure. I also explained to them that 80 degrees was not cold. I have not heard another word from them(48 hours). THANK YOU AMAZON for making the return process so painless. Once I realized that the company was going to be no further help, I decided to return the product. The return links on the Amazon site were easy to follow and the packaging labels printed up with no problem. Amazon is great but I would not purchase another Whynter product again.
