The Whirlpool WHES40E 40, 000 grain water softener is ideal for families of 1-6+ people looking for a reliable way to soften their water. It eliminates embarrassing mineral stains, uses less detergent in the wash for cleaner, brighter and softer fabrics, and helps your water-using appliances last longer by allowing them to run more efficiently. Soft water also helps to keep your hair and skin feel healthy and soft. Whirlpool water softeners employ demand initiated regeneration meaning the system will only regenerate based on your hardness level and how much water you actually use, this results in significant salt and water savings. It will not waste water by regenerating (like competitor models) while you are on vacation and you will not run out of soft water if you use more water than usual. Whirlpool water softeners also come with simple to program electronics and include a low salt indicator light and work on city water or well water. Over time, water softeners also keep your water using appliances (water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, etc. ) working efficiently, last longer and save energy. All Whirlpool water softeners come standard with a 1-year manufacturers parts and labor , 3-year limited electronics , and 10-year limited on the tanks. The full parts and labor can be extended to 2 years with the purchase of 3 bottles of Whirlpool WHEWSC water softener cleanser within the first year of ownership (sold separately). Softens water well. Easy to install. Uses very little salt. After a lot of research this softener ended up being a great value. So far quality seems very good. It arrived in great shape and had more than expected for my plumber to install. If you had a Kenmore you can almost set it in without any adjustment to plumbing and DIY. When we finally opened it on date plumber was available, it had more than I expected in extra parts needed to install. Wish they had that in the description as I'd spent some money ahead of plumber to be sure he had everything needed to install that day. Somehow had a negative view of Whirlpool appliances as being low end and the reviews were not great. Arrived with a little housing damage inside the salt reservoir, but no effect on functioning. The shipping box was pristine, so probably from the manufacturer. Good step by step instructions for installation. No surprises. The resin pack in my old unit was shot, and would burn through salt pretty fast. This unit is salt frugal, and the water stays quite comfortable between regeneration cycles. After a few months of use, I give it two thumbs up! ... show more

We read many reviews on replacement softeners and this Whirlpool unit kept coming up. It is perfect for our needs retired and just the two of us. The unit came packed very well with no damage this was a concern after reading reviews. Installed unit ourselves and it was very easy to do. Programming was also very easy. Unit has been operational for about two weeks and is functioning very well. The light in the salt tank is really nice to have. We replaced our Northstar 10 year old unit with this one.     • Missing parts and poor packaging

The unit is heavy so some I understand the box will not be perfect by the time it is delivered. When it arrived, it was held together with what seemed like an entire roll of tape. There were a few loose parts laying in the bottom and all the empty packaging stuffed inside. Aside from being roughed up, it probably would have worked if all the parts were there. Update: installed the same unit but from Lowe’s and picked up in store. Works great paired with the whirlpool whole house filter (WHELJ1).     • Great softener, horrible packaging

Bought this softener after reading many reviews and wanting an all in one softener without the seperate brine tank to save floor space to replace our old one. At the same time I was concerned about receiving a damaged unit and having to deal with the return of it. Well, took a chance, even paid the extra amount to have Amazon bring it inside the house hoping it would reduce the risk of getting a broken softener. Amazon delivery was pretty good, although the box came laying on its side inside the truck and the box looked a bit beat up. After opening the box, the top lid was cracked pretty good, one of the tabs around the resin tank was cracked, and the electronic display panel was knocked out of it's mount. This thing took a beating before even being delivered. There was absolutely no, none, zero packaging inside the box around the softener. Worst packaging I have ever seen, especially on an item that costs this much. Horrible packaging on Whirlpools part, this needs to be addressed. As some suggest, buy locally if you can. At least you can see what you are getting before delivery or installation. In the end, I decided to see if it would work and was able to pop the display panel back into place. As far as the softener itself goes, it works great. Noticed the difference within the first several days. Installation was easy and took very little time, programming was easy, and there were no leaks. Already ran its first regeneration cycle and thank goodness, everything seems to be operating as it should. Knocked off the one star for packaging and being damaged. Otherwise, we will see about longevity and will update if need be. Would purchase again but locally to avoid damaged from delivery process. ... show more

    • Saves salt by sensing how much water is used

Now a month after installing I am pleased to say this was a great purchase. I shopped around for a replacement for my 15+ year old Whirlpool, and ended up buying the same unit again. Many softeners have a clock and regenerate on a fixed schedule whether or not you are using water. My water use varies as I travel sporadically and fill the hot tub several times, so the metered use makes sense. Taking out the old WHES40 revealed some iron in the system as I have well water. This model has a prewash mode that you can set, flushing out iron or other deposits. Weird that you need to download the instruction manual to set this up as the installation manual that came with it makes no mention of it. I found connecting 1 inch sweat copper pipe to this machine was easy, just pay attention to their warning not to put any tension on the fittings. My new unit came with a redundant extra bypass valve and connection hardware. I can't tell if this was a mistake or something they do for everyone as some have trouble with the first set of pipes? I like the o-ring connections that require no tools for assembly. Two people can easily get the box into the basement, but the entire bottom of the box was sealed with just one measly piece of tape that had given up before delivery. It seems Whirlpool can invest a few cents and put more tape across all the seams of their box so their products get delivered in one piece. I notice that after 15 years the softener remains the same, except you can now subscribe to three bottles of their cleaner each year to extend the warranty by five years. Whoever put the stickers on this machine was in a big hurry as they are not square. Defects are quite minor as I intend to get two decades of soft water out of my 40 grain well water thanks to Whirlpool. ... show more
