  • The thermometer is a big plus
The unit is great for smoking. It will take some practice to master using it. There is a little leaking of smoke so I put it on the stovetop and turn the stove exhaust fan on. The thermometer is a big plus seeing all other similar units don't have this. The only thing I don't like is cleaning it. They should have some kind of sleeve to insert on the bottom so cleaning would be easy because the unit itself can not be submerged in water to clean. I use a piece of aluminum foil on the bottom to catch the grease or water and that's a big difference. Makes the best hamburgers I've ever had! ... show more

  • Perfect for apartment life!
Really loving this. I always wanted a smoker, but normally they are big and crazy expensive. This was the price of a good crock pot! It works wonderfully. Yes, a small amount of smoke escapes, but I just adjust the lid for the tightest fit, and turn on the fan over the stove. Works amazingly well! A fantastic feature is the temperature probe. ... show more

  • Food tastes great
Pretty cool, works very well, but it's a bummer to clean the burnt wood out. Almost welds itself to the burner and after I clean it (soapy warm water, soaking for a few minutes) it messes up the electronics till it heats up and drys itself 😎

  • SMOKED HAMS IN MY APARTMENT
I really like this smoker. First off , I live in a small one bedroom apartment on a higher floor. I made these pork butt hams in the kitchen. Just four feet away from the smoke detector. With ZERO problems. The day I ordered it from Amazon, I put the pork butt pieces in a brine in the refrigerator. When the package got here it was checked for damage and cleaned for the next days use. Earlier in the day I had removed the pork from the brine. Washed it and put on the netting. I put the pork out to glaze and reach room temperature. I read through and followed the simple easy instructions and was up and running in ten minutes. First I covered the bottom with foil and filled the chip pan with Kiawe or (mesquite) I put the cured pork in and attached the probe. Closed the lid, set the temperature and turned it on. Took just an hour and the smoke smell in the house was nice. Not overpowering. The ham came out perfect. Not dry and lightly smoked. And best of all it was delicious, first time. I would definitely recommend this unit to anyone that likes smoke cookery. Especially in your apartment, in the city. ... show more

  • Cooks way too hot and fast in Smoke mode
I ordered this for the smoking feature but admit I only had a vague idea of how it worked. As it turns out this is both a traditional slow cooker and a smoker, but the 2 modes are not related and in traditional slow cooking mode with the vessel in place, you can not use the smoke feature at all. The cooking vessel is only used for traditional slow cooking and completely blocks the smoker section. For smoking you can only use the supplied racks. So far I've only used this as a slow cooker and it worked fine. If you are used to the features of a typical old-fashioned slow cooker you should understand this does not use a ceramic pot but a non-stick lightweight metal one. It cleans easily but is definitely on the light side. The unit heats up quickly but unlike my still going strong after 25 years slow cooker, this becomes very hot on the outside , even on low cooking. The controls are probably the worst part. I figured them out fast enough, but this is a unit that you program and it all depends on how quickly you press buttons because it is all timed. You should know that it uses only 1 set of lights for both slow cook and smoke modes and you need to pay attention to either one side of the lights or the other. Everything is timed out when it comes to pushing the buttons, as in you have to press a button within a certain period of time or start all over. It gets confusing. Unlike my old unit this allows me to program in how long to cook for. After cooking it automatically goes into warm mode. This will not allow you to program in a certain time for high mode and then low mode, you'd have to manually change that. There are some recipes I cook first on high to get it going and then switch to low, but there would be no way to program that in to this unit to do it automatically. The lightness of the unit and the confusing controls make me deduct a star from this but I still need to smoke something for the real test and will update this review accordingly. As just a slow cooker this is expensive. UPDATE: I used the smoker for a bone in Boston butt shoulder roast , about 3 1/2 pounds and while it did have subtle smoky flavor, parts of it were too dry. This led me to observe that while in slow cooker mode you have a choice of high and low settings, in Smoke mode you have either cold, hot or combo mode and it doesn't even specify whether it is using high or low to cook. I was expecting a 5 to 6 hour cooking time , but using the supplied probe, the roast reached 200 degrees in less than 3 1/2 hours. I also let it rest for nearly an hour. I did not use any kind of rub and used Hickory wood chips, filling the chip holder about half full. It's obvious this unit is going to take trial and error to get right. I put 2 of the 3 racks in to sit the roast well above the smoke chamber. Unlike a typical slow cooker, when you are smoking the meat in this you won't be able to set the meat down into a liquid. I also did not have any big problem with smoke escaping. I did have it about 3 feet from an exhaust fan which I only had going in the beginning, but my fan is loud and there just wasn't enough smoke escaping to worry me. The smoke detector never went off. The electrical cord on this is not very long and is grounded, so depending on where you want it , you may need a grounded extension cord. Update #2. Second try, did hamburgers. Nice smoky flavor but overdone and dried out. In Smoke mode you have no control over temperature of the unit, there is no low and high in this mode and it cooks items way too fast. Saw a recipe that called for hamburgers for 1 hour and 15 minutes, I stopped way before that and they were already dried out. Probably done in just 20 minutes. More trial and error ,but not having a low and high in Smoke mode is a major flaw to this unit. I've dropped it to 3 stars. ... show more

  • Not an all-in-one solution, but really easy and effective
So basically this is a crock pot with the option to stack wood chips around the heating element. In terms of smoke production, this is really quite effective. In terms of cooking the food, it is fast and effective BUT you are limited to an extremely moist cooking environment. The food essentially steams. For something like ribs, you can cut them into sections and cook them all the way like that. You won’t have bark, but they’ll be delicious. But if you’re trying to recreate outdoor smoking, you need to be a little more creative. Here’s what I recommend - for pulled pork, take a half pork butt and cook it for two hours on the “cold smoke” setting. Then move it to the oven, uncovered, and bring up to 160F internal. At that point move it back to the Weston and use the combination setting (cold smoke followed by hot) until it hits your desired temp (I like 205). Before pulling, put it back in the oven for 15-20 minutes to reestablish the bark. Is that a lot of work? Yes, but it gets a pretty good result in an apartment. And it’s frankly not much more work than smoking outdoors and tending a fire. ... show more
