    • It is a Great product but...
The first order arrived in 2 days but I couldn't get it to work. I called Western Electric, the manufacturer by looking them up on the internet. The technical support people were very helpful and after doing some tests they determined that the product was defective. This happens with technical products, i.e., a percentage come off the assembly line defective. Amazon gave me a free shipping label to ship the product back. I put the drive back into the Amazon shipping plastic package, resealed, and took that and the shipping label to Mail Man Joes. They did the rest. I immediately ordered and paid for another one. That came two days later and I simply plugged it into the USB port and it worked. This is a very good product. It is easy to use. Several weeks have gone by and it is still working like a Champ! It took Amazon about 5 days to process a refund on the defective one. ... show more

    • Not Reliable
Ordered a refurb 4 TB external drive and the first one was dead on arrival. Amazon replaced it with another refurb at my request and the replacement worked...intermittently. It has been reformatted several times and works for a while but then becomes 'unrcognizable' by the system. Not very happy since the return window has closed and I now have a $90 piece of junk. ... show more

    • Perfect for what I needed
This is a great hard drive. I've used it for photos mainly. I wish I would've created folders first so just make sure you have a plan when you first have it. If you have a lot of files it'll take a long time, kinda slow, but overall there's so much space it's not a terrible thing.

My first WP Passport drives a few years ago had the silver bodies with the rounded corners, and so far they have worked quite well, the next generation was a little bigger, back, with what seemed like a casing made of two segments, one about two thirds, the other about one third, of the length. The activity light was a bright rectangular horizontal LED. In some of those the join of the casing was not rigid where the two segments met, although I don't know if that affected functionality. Some of them vibrated a good deal when operating and one recently failed and froze up my computer when attached, although I'm not sure the reason. Disk utility repair did not work. Luckily I had the original drive--the silver rounded corner version, that this was a copy of but I had to waste a new disk drive of that two-piece version to make a new copy, which took about 16 hours. Getting back to this current design, of which I purchased two 4 TB drives, I don't know how it will work, but they are recognized by my computer, and have fairly low vibration. Physically they seem to be of a sturdier construction than the last design, they are about 1/8 thinner, top to bottom, and about 1/8 inch shorter. One thing I don't particularly like is that they have no foot pads as previous ones did, however minimal they were, so these clunk down on the hard surfaces and can slip around more. Also, if you go by the side that has the label plate, which on previous versions is always on the bottom, the position of the port for the cable is reversed, so instead of being on the left side of the end and is now on the right side of the end, and the direction of the cable plug must be turned the other way to fit. Another thing is the previous generation had a rather large horizontal LED activity light, whereas this has a very small, fainter circular LED opening, but still adequate. ... show more

    • Failed without warning in five months
$115 is a lot to pay for something that only works for five months. This WD 4 T was my Mac Time Machine Backup. It has worked without any issue with my 13" Mojave system since April, 2020. Last night I plugged it in to run a backup and it made a rough grinding noise it had never made before. It made this noise for about a minute then nothing. My computer cannot see it for me to run diagnostics, to erase it, or reformat it. I replaced the cord with a different cord from one of the two newer WD 4 T external hard drives that I purchased in June as additional backups. There was no change. I tried plugging it in with a USB cord rather than the USB-C. There was no change. I tried a different port. No change. I tried waiting 24 hours. No change. Each time it made this new grinding noise. It's not a normal "this disk is working" noise. It's a "this disk has failed miserably," noise. All my Time Machine backups for the last five months: gone. Plus the other things I had backed up on it. After reading all these other reviews talking about how these have failed, over and over again, I don't expect the ones I bought in June to last now, either. The reason I chose Western Digital, even with the bad reviews here? Because I have 2 older WD external hard drives. One, an older version of this one, has been working for me on a regular basis for about 5 YEARS. I retired it because it was starting to slow down and I was afraid it MIGHT fail.     • Stupendously fast to write - easy install but one small PITA
Easy install, writes incredibly quickly and, so far, correctly. Backed up 1.2 TB in 5.5 hrs. one small niggle. install seems to start a couple of processes on MAC that must be stopped manually (using MAC OS process manager) before disk can be reformatted to newer more efficient format.
