I have accidents during the night that have destroyed a number of mattresses. I was determined to not let it happen again. I purchased an encapsulating vinyl cover and then put this on top. I'm convinced that it's truly waterproof. I did the one, two punch with the cover in that some reviews said this cover did leak (as did all the reviews of the waterproof mattress protectors), probably not that much, but did leak. I was not going to take that chance. The vinyl cover is an encapsulating design, this mattress protector works like a fitted sheet. I needed something cheap and quickly. This is a great product, soft, durable in the wash/dryer but not the prettiest. Not sure if I could put a sheet over it like my zip up one. Stays on the bed well even with lots of movement during sleep.
