This does prevent water (or urine) from leaking through. this is my second purchase, because the waterproof function will not work forever! After about 150 washes it will become more porous. To extend the life, I wash in cold and air dry. (If you have to machine dry, use lowest heat setting) it fits snugly, is comfortable to sleep on as an actual sheet as there is a brushed polyester feel to the top, and is very quiet! I have bought a few of these - it is breathable and light so that is a plus. Recently (after a few washes) - my child's pee went through to the mattress so going to try replacing them. It seems to break down after time/washing so be sure to replace every year just in case :(

My Honey Bunny is litter-trained, but if my cat comes in and gets on the bed, she has a habit of marking. This cover has protected my poor mattress from getting soaked with her pee perfectly, even when it's quite a lot of fluid it hasn't leaked through and is easy to wash.
