Had amazing results with Vornado 520 hurricane floor fans for years, so I was excited to try their 2025 VMHi500 space heater. If you only need to heat a normal room with a normal ceiling height (like a bedroom or home office), then I'm sure you can get the temperature up as high as desired (possibly up to the unit's max temp of 90 F). HEATING A CHALLENGING SPACE (OPEN FLOOR PLAN, VAULTED CEILING, LOFT) I need to heat a challenging space: a living room with an overlooking loft and open floor plan (connecting to kitchen, hallways). A normal space heater won't cut it. Thankfully, this whole room unit will. Here are my results after using the unit daily for 10 days for my specific situation: The Vornado will absolutely make and keep the area comfortable (68-72 F). If it only gets to 68 F on day one, by day two, it should be able to maintain a steady 70 F, and by day three 71-72 F, though it will likely top out there on its own. This is due to the unit no longer having to fight the cold by establishing a thermal baseline. This baseline should more or less hold overnight, only dipping by maybe 2-5 degrees if you shut the heater off overnight. And it warms up the area up again quickly to your desired temp (within 10-30 minutes depending on number of degrees needed). However, I have noticed that once the thermal baseline gets established, it is possible for the temperature in my space to get as high as the mid-70s even when the unit is turned down or off thanks to ambient heat from adjacent apartments (top floor). Regardless, with the baseline established, I don't need to run the unit constantly. Instead, I let it cycle up/down on its own for most, if not all of the day. I rarely have to manually tweak the settings. So this is a (mostly) set-it-and-forget-it device designed for maximum comfort. Again, these results are for a large open floor plan with a vaulted ceiling on the top floor. I also have good insulation and all doors shut, blinds/curtains closed, etc., and a stable, non-freezing fall/winter temperature to test it in (37-55 F). I'd expect the Vornado to reach higher temps in warmer temperatures or lower temps in freezing temperatures. I don't expect it to go lower than 62-65 F with the Vornado running in freezing weather, but have not tested it yet below 37 F. FACTORS AND FEATURES The VMHi500 isn't cheap, but you get what you pay for: quality construction, effective heat flow, digital controls, a timer (from 1-12 hours), an internal thermostat so you can see its progress, and even a remote (batteries included). The cord comes tucked into a clever hole on the back for easy, out of the way storage. The unit isn't too heavy or bulky; it should easily fit just about anywhere as long as it's flat, sturdy, and away from hazards. It can be picked up and carried with one hand via the built-in handle (where the controls are). It automatically shuts off if tipped over (which takes some doing, so only a large pet or determined child is likely to manage that). EASE OF USE It's easy to operate and only takes a few minutes to learn how. While running, the ceramic parts remain cool to the touch. There are no blazing hot, glowing orange coils to worry about like on traditional space heaters. It's also quiet, though more in a "white noise" sense. It's not silent by any means, but the sound levels change as the unit cycles up or down in power to establish or maintain your desired temperature. There is a bit of a classic dry air "heater smell" from it, but I don't find it off-putting, especially after the first day or two. It comes expertly packaged, sandwiched in its box between heavy styrofoam cushions. SHUTTING DOWN It takes 10 seconds to safely power the Vornado down, and there is a digital countdown to let you know when it's done and it's safe to move (beyond the audio clue when it goes silent). OVERALL OPINION This is a great space heater; a top of the line, 5-star workhorse that should last you for years. UPDATE (January 24, 2026): Been almost two months of daily use without any problem. First energy bill arrived showing that despite constant use, the Vornado only increased my bill by roughly $20/month.

This Little Heater is So Cool! Easy to use, built well, built to last, feel heat immediately with this little fella while stays cool to the touch. I got myself a Vornado VHMi500 because I was tired of feeling cold in one particular room in the house. I like the Safety Features and how fast it warms up the room. The Timer and Thermostat are easy to set and has a “Fan Only” setting as well. I try to only buy products that are built well, easy to use, reliable and kick ass. This little guy definitely falls into that category and checks all the boxes for me. I guess you can say that I am a “happy camper”. …and everyone knows why campers are happy, right? I’m not sure, but if it has something to do with pooping in the woods, count me out. I do recommend this product and I am happy with my purchase. 5 Stars A+ 100%

The media could not be loaded. We have a smaller Vornado air circulating heater for a smaller room in our home which has worked great for three years and counting. I consider Vornado to be a reliable brand which makes a good quality product. With that in mind, we purchased this larger heater to use in a larger room. It worked wonderfully for two months. Now just one week after our return window closed, the heater has died. It turns on and produces some heat, but the fan no longer functions, so it is about as effective as a heated rock. Hopefully I will have luck with the warranty/ return process through Vornado's website since I'm SOL trying to return this defective product through Amazon. Extra points to Amazon for their foresight in setting the return-by date to just one week prior to this expensive heater giving up the ghost.

I am very happy with my new VMHi500 space heater!. I'm so happy with it, I bought two more for Christmas gifts. PROS: DESIGN: The all metal, soft edge look is so much nicer than most heater designs from Vornado. I think they realized the it's a permanent fixture in some rooms, and upped their design game. USABILITY: I did not need to read the manual. Power on, push +/- to create a set temp, and choose High/1500W or Low/750W. You can then set a 1-12 hour run time and go safely to sleep. SAFETY: This is my first tip-shutoff heater with a run timer, and I love those features. No more OCD wakeups in the middle of the night. The thermostat will also shut it off. Moreover, the chasse is absolutely cool. The only hot surface is the grill disc, which could only pose a problem for toddlers. Otherwise, it's nearly idiot proof for burns. PERFORMANCE: I was surprised how much better this was than my much smaller heater with the same wattage. I assume that the Vornado air mix flow distributes heat better.. Also, the heating coils produce NO OZONE, which my smaller, tight coiled heaters do. It's just small enough, and quiet enough, to quickly heat a couch area with warm air directly on you. However, it also seems to do a great job at mixing that heat with the air in the room, hence it's full room description. NOISE: I do not agree with many reviews here. On low, the fan is very quiet and even slows more as it approaches the temperature set point. I thought it was broken when the fan got that slow, but it's by design. However, on high, it's about as loud as a quality bathroom fan. Better than most, but not absolutely quiet. Still, quiet enough to have next to you when you watch TV. CONS: My only complaint, it should have a black option, though white works pretty well. It takes up about a cubic foot, but it still works under my coffee table and on the line of compact. QUIRKS: SHUTOFF: The unit will go to fan only mode to cool before shutoff. It displays a 10 second countdown. FAN SPEED: On both High/Low, the fan will moderate depending on how close you are to the set point. SLOW FAN NOISE: There's a slight rpm pulse sound when it goes to super low. BOTTOMLINE: I've never spent this much on a space heater, but if I get 10 years, then every penny was worth it.
