  • Big fan of vornado products, but this one seems like a big miss.
Size: 42"
As stated, I'm a big fan of Vornado and the products they make. Generally well built, and function very well. This product on the other hand has been a major let down. First off, let's start with the good. In a "good" unit (more on that later) it is dead silent, and I mean SILENT besides the noise of the air. At full power these move a LOT of air, and do so really really well, while remaining completely operation silent. Contrast to the conventional stand up units that make a lot of noise from the fan area, not necessarily due to a loud motor, but from all the turbulence building up in the "bubble" of the fan itself. These units just have a much different surface area, being tall and vertical, it can move a ton of CFM while maintaining virtually noise-less operation. Now on to the bad: extreme lack of consistency between units. I bought two units, and had to return one due to immediate loud vibration and rattling noises that others have noted. The unit I did not return was dead silent, but is also now beginning to make those same noises (less than one week of use). The replacement of the first unit is solid, and quiet, but I'm probably going to return both and go back to their standard standing air circulators. I don't trust the replacement or the replacement that will come from the now vibrating unit to stand up long term after the return window to not start acting up with the noises. Another con is that it does not return to it's previous setting if disconnected from power, and then reconnected, in the case of using a smart outlet / plug and using HomeKit or the like. Turning it off via HomeKit is fine, but when turning it back on, you must use the remote or buttons to turn it back on and turn the fan speed back to where you want it. All the standard Vornado air circulators turn on automatically when supplied power, assuming the dial is set to an on position, and so it's extremely simple to set up geofencing with HomeKit to turn them all off automatically when I get home, and turn them on automatically when I come home, turn all the units off upstairs when I'm not up there, turn all the units on in my bedroom with one button click, etc. This may not apply to you if you don't use HomeKit or other smart home control, but it's definitely worth noting. For anyone who has removed the front cover on these fans, you will note metal clips on the blades. I believe these are for balancing the rotating blade assembly, and I think these fans suffer from poor balancing from the factory. They use the metal clips to attempt to balance them, and that's why I think they are so hit or miss. I have read other reviews that had a bad one come in, then a replacement come in that was also bad, and then finally getting a replacement that was dead silent. I think they all get the same balancing clips placed in the same spots, and thus really aren't consistent unit to unit. I really wish they would revisit this product, and improve it, because it is a great design in theory. Very compact, can be placed anywhere without taking up a ton of room, moves a LOT of air, and in an ideal unit, DEAD silent. The DC version is even more energy efficient. I do wonder if that one is improved at all over this one. I'm not sure what can be done, whether it's just an inherent flaw in the design, or something that can be revised. But I have classic style Vornado air circulators that have likely thousands of hours on them, and are working just as well as they did since day 1. Covers popped off, vacuum them out, and good to go for another year. I can not assume the same for these units, and don't expect them to have the same level of longevity, which is a huge shame because they really do provide a superior flow of air to the classic style ones. You can have it pointed right at you, and it's super diffuse and really does what their marketing says... mixes and flows the air all over the room without any oscillation needed. But the poor balancing and having 2 out of 3 having issues (one instantly, the other within a week) makes me not want to keep these long term when I know there is the good old reliable unit out there. A bit more noise, a bit less ideal air flow, but long term won't give me trouble. ... show more

  • I ordered a second one 10 minutes after I set this one up.
Size: 42"
This isn't our first Vornado product, but it's probably the first we spent more than 30 bucks on. Those smaller, simpler round fans were good for what we used them for. We have an adequate central AC, but it struggles with the living room sometimes on hot sunny days due to a single very large window. It's a reasonably large living room - typical for a mid-sized 70's ranch style home. Put this at one corner, and it's nearly impossible to find a spot in the room you want to be that you can't feel it on max speed and wide dispersal. I'm at the complete other end of the room and loose hairs on my forehead are blowing a bit. It's a constant low but very enjoyable breeze at any position on this far wall, and at most other spots in the room it's only better. I didn't do anthing special with the placement except max out the dispersal and the fan speed, plus eyeball the direction of the vents. At this far end of the room you can hear it on max speed, but not enough to cause you to even raise your voice in conversation. I can comfortably talk in quiet, normal tones with anyone in the room. Again, that's at max speed. If I click the remote two or three times to the left, I can barely hear it from this other side of the room, and the breeze is still noticeable. A couple more clicks and it's only going to be audible in a silent room, plus the breeze is still perceptible. Standing next to it at Max speed it's obviously louder, but still not obnoxious. I probably wouldn't choose to sit next to it most of the time, but if I did it would be tolerable. Very, very quiet for the volume it puts out. If I close the vents to their narrow setting with the fan on max, it's like a stripe of narrow high intensity wind that easily traverses the length of the room. I ran it for about 10 minutes before I ordered another one, to help keep the kitchen temp regulated when cooking big meals. We have inadequate AC in that room also when we use the stove or oven for long periods. It was easy to put together and the controls are simple. The stand was easy to attach and is adequately (if not overly) sturdy. Also, unlike reviews I read of competing products when shopping around, it's got a panel you can remove for cleaning the blades. I have not yet tested the timer function, but it seems unlikely to me that I will find complaint with it. I can't imagine being happier with this fan. ... show more

  • Really nice fan, but off balance from the factory
Size: 42"
The media could not be loaded. This fan is really nice, and I like the amount of air it pushes. It looks great, and the slim profile is exactly what I was looking for. I love that you can adjust the vent from wide to narrow. The box arrived from UPS in its retail box only, with no additional protection. The retail box had a couple of holes in it, and the cardboard was weak on the end. It looks like it got squished. As soon as I powered on the fan, I noticed it has a very pronounced wobble. It's not as bad on the lower settings, but I got this for moving lots of air and want to use it on high. It doesn't make any rattle or noise, but I can see the tower physically wobbling out of balance. I thought this might have been due to rough shipping, so I took the air inlet grill off to have a look and see if anything was broken. To my surprise, everything appears intact, however the fan shipped with 3 weights attached to the fan blades in various places. Two weights are directly across from each other near the bottom, and there is a single weight at the top. The wobblesl is worse than the video shows. Being that the fan blade is plastic, I was surprised it needed weights clipped onto the fan. They appear to have a bit of glue on them, and I don't see any glue with a missing weight anywhere. So my conclusion is that either it shipped from Vornado with weights added to the fan to balance it, but it wasn't done correctly, or I got someone else's return. All the plastic was covering the legs, and there was packaging stuck to the tower near the top... it didn't look like anyone had ever opened it before. I will be returning this one, but I like it enough I will probably try another one ... show more
