  • Works great, but a small flaw in the instructions
OK, I got a 'free' one to review. Liked it well enough, I purchased a second (my money) for the other door. One catch - the directions show you a pic of a door swinging and tell you to determine if it is a right swing or left swing. You have to flick a switch inside the lock before assembly to match this determination. However, this diagram is incomplete. So if you think from the outside, as you would normally measure doors, you would get the wrong answer. Later, when you go to program the lock in the app, you get the full diagram, and that's when you figure out you have it wrong. BUT, you can reverse the switch in the app, without having to deinstall/reinstall. It just means your lock doesn't work correctly until you figure this out. SO, when looking at the printed directions, you have to think as if you are standing inside, even if it shows the frame on the wrong side. Once you get past that, the lock/app install was flawless. It easily pairs and lets you assign passcodes, permanent and temporary, use the RFID tags(two provided) and control with app. However, to control via Alexa and remotely, you have to have the G2 bridge, which was sold separately. Make sure you buy the G2 bridge that says "works with DDLock" to be sure you get the right one. Not sure if the ones for TTLock would also work, and didn't want to risk it, for a couple dollars difference. Also, the diagram for laying out the hole in the door shows an extra hole at the top of the keypad. It is a 3/8" hole about 2 inches above the main lock cylinder hole. Note that this hole is NOT required. However, I already drilled the hole before I knew it. But this is good to know for those who want to use in a rental, etc. You can revert back to the 'stock' lock later if you leave this hole out. I used the extra hole, just for the extra security and ruggedness, but in cases where you need to not be drilling extra holes, you can still use this lock. Assuming lease/landlord is OK with it, of course. I use with Alexa and there is one small catch. You can lock the door with a simple, "Alexa, lock door". But if you say, "Alexa, unlock door", it won't do it without a PIN number (which you created in the lock app, DDLock). The bummer is it requires you to say the PIN out loud. She will ask for the PIN, and when you say it, she will then unlock. However, here's two ways around it. First, if your fine saying it out loud, you can do all at once. Say, "Alexa, open back door with PIN 12345." She'll do it all at once this way. Or, even better, make a custom routine. You can have a routine that does, for instance: "Alexa, refry the beans" (or whatever code phrase you use). Then, make the command she executes be "Unlock back door with PIN 12345". As long as you include the PIN in the command to execute, you don't have to say the PIN each time. Great workaround. Disclaimer: I am reviewing this product as part of the Amazon Vine program. I received the product at no cost for my honest, unbiased review. If I gave the product 4 or 5 stars, it is because I was pleasantly surprised with the product. If I gave it less than that, I will tell you exactly why and what problems I encountered. Unless noted, this is an initial review from using for a limited amount of time, and not full blown lab-grade controlled testing. YMMV. Sorry, but I try to be as accurate and complete as possible, so this is likely at the end of a longer than usual review. I hope you find it helpful, though. ... show more

  • Many nice features
So the template for this review asks for a rating on the fingerprint reader, and I will admit, I thought I was getting the model that included that function - but alas, no. So no rating for the fingerprint reader. However, the rest of the lock is just great. I like how the buttons on the outside are electronic (the numbers illuminate when you touch the device screen), so there's nothing to be damaged by weather-infiltration. That was one feature that drew me to this device. The other features were the many different ways by which the lock can be operated. There are the buttons mentioned above, by which one enters a code, there are RFID cards that the lock can be programmed to accept, there is the physical key (like any other lock), and there is the application on your phone. Of course, if you get the fingerprint reader model, there is also that option, and with the addition of a separately-purchased gateway (make sure you get the right one!), you can also operate the device by voice or otherwise through Alexa or Google Home. Something for everyone, right? My rating indicates that this lock was easy to install (5 stars out of 5). Take that with a grain of salt. I only say that it's easy because I have installed several different smart locks from several different manufacturers at this point, and this one was no more difficult an install they any of them were. But none of them are particularly easy to do the first time. I will say, however, that this one might have had some of the best installation instructions, and definitely has the most convenient access to the battery compartment. This lock is pretty standard, as far as construction, in relation to the other locks I have. In fact, I tested this lock by pulling an existing smart lock off my door, leaving the deadbolt mechanism in place, and merely slapping the inside and outside pieces of this lock onto the existing in-door deadbolt assembly. It fit perfectly, and paired the installation process down to just a couple of minutes. But again, I've done this several times now - your mileage may vary. The lock was easy to program, and all of the functions worked great. I like it a lot. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Seems Quality
I have tested more than a few smart door locks, and keep falling into a similar trap. Once they suffer a cold rain, or snow, they stop working. This one touts a good weatherproof rating, and so far, has held up to two storms. Setting it up was pretty straight forward. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. The manual key gave me a sense of relief in case it fails, which so far it has not. I haven't had to change the batteries yet, but it hasn't been that long, so I can't really speak to their longevity, which is the other part that tends to be an issue for me with these type of locks. I am holding out hope to be impressed still though. Amazon asked me to rate the fingerprint reader, but the one I received did not have that function. I gave it full-stars for this non-existent feature because I don't feel the lock should be dinged for a weird category. Mine is code, bluetooth, magnetic key, or traditional key. The deadbolt itself seems quite solid. I couldn't pick it. That's not a skill of mine though. Still, I feel it is pretty secure in comparison to most others of this style that sacrifice security for convenience of not fishing for keys. This one seems much more like the hardcore oldschool deadbolt it replaces. All in all, this seems like one of the better smart locks for exterior doors I have tested. Of course, several of those have failed after I thought they were great, so I'll have to get back to you in a year or so to be sure. But, so far, so good! ... show more
