  • My first digital door lock; easier than expected
Color: Matte Black Style: Square Smart lock
One of our daughters has had a digital lock on their door for a few years now and it has been effective and relatively trouble free, so we decided to try one ourselves. We've put this on our front door. When I first got the package and quickly scanned the installation instructions, I was a bit daunted but when I actually started the project I found the process simpler and quicker than expected though there IS more to it than installing a simple key lock. There is a phone app that works with this lock: DDLock (for Android and IOS). The installation manual provides a QR code through which you can download the app and I personally found and obtained it from the Google Play Store. I would suggest installing this app on the phone of everyone who will be using this lock and might have need to make any changes (ie added passcodes or emergency unlocks). You do not require the phone app to simply lock and unlock your door. You DO need the app to initially set up the lock and I strongly suggest you install the app before getting into the installation. There is a separate printed manual just for the app. Remember those? My first concern was that the door in our house, which was built in 1953, might have some dimension that the new lock couldn't physically handle. However, since the door already had a completely standard looking deadbolt in it, I wasn't too nervous. There are several dimensions that need to be considered but I suspect that it would be a very rare bird indeed that this lock couldn't accomodate. Unless you are installing this from scratch and need to know where and how, you really have nothing to worry about. The installation manual has clear instructions and diagrams for all of this and includes a good template sheet if you are drilling holes in a new door. This manual is not a poor translation from a foreign language - it has good clear English and very legible diagrams. But I will mention here one small shortcoming in their documentation that failed to alleviate a shortcoming in my knowledge of doors. That is what, SPECIFICALLY, makes a door right- or left-handed [See NOTE below]. The manual provides a diagram of each, but only showing doors opening outwards while my door opened inwards and I had no idea how that might affect the categorization as there was no other explanatory text; simply the two pictures and their left-and right-hand labels. Additionally, at the time, I was concerned that the diagram did not show the hinges but after some thought I've realized that doors can only swing in the direction of their pins so the orientation of the hinges was clearly implied. But until I had that epiphany, I didn't know which I had. The result of that was when the lock was almost fully installed, I discovered it could not operate electronically OR manually. To avoid this, aside from knowing whether your door is left or right, check the following: the long, thin 'tailpiece' by which the locking mechanism mechanically operates the lock, can only rotate 90 degrees. The same is true of the knob by which you will be manually operating your lock. Turn them both, by hand, before fully assembling things to make certain they are swinging through the SAME 90 degrees and will work together to operate the lock. NOTE: DOOR HANDEDNESS Face your door on the side from which the hinge pins or "knuckles" are visible. The door will be opening towards you. Put one hand on the one of the hinge pins and the other hand on the knob. Whichever hand lands on the knob is the handedness of the door. If your right hand holds the knob, your door is right-handed and vice-versa. Once installation is complete you have a few technical tasks to manage. This can seem overly complicated but only due to the numerous ways in which this lock my be operated. The door may be locked and unlocked from the DDLock app on your phone. The door may be unlocked by use of either of two small "ic cards" provided with the lock (like a very small air tag). The door may be unlocked by entering the Master Passcode or any User Passcode at the keypad. The door may be operated with a standard key or via the knob on the inner side. The door has an auto mode that will lock the door a selected amount of time after unlocking that can range from 5 to 900 seconds. Another mode will only lock when you choose to lock it. I am in Auto right now but may go manual as we often leave the door open. The lock extends the deadbolt after a short wait and the bolt will bang the doorframe if we do not notice it's sticking out there. User passcodes may be permanently valid, valid for a single use, valid for a period of time or valid for a specific weekly period. Although the installation manual states that the Master passcode is 7 digits long and user passcodes are 6, when you get into the app and are actually setting them up, you will find they both can be anywhere from 4 to 9 digits. If you are worried about people watching you punch in your code, you can add random digits to the beginning and end up to a total of 16 digits and the door will still unlock. This is only the second digital lock I've ever dealt with and the first I've owned and installed. The wealth of features here might well be commonplace in the market, but I have been impressed with the quality of manufacture, the price, the thorough legibility and intelligibility of the documentation, the flexibility of its well thought-out design and the fact that it looks cool as snot. ; - ) I wouldn't score it an absolute 100% but there were not enough dinks to make me even consider removing a star. I would definitely buy it again. You should too. ... show more

  • No wifi required
Color: Matte Black Style: Square Smart lock
I really like Veise smart locks. I've been using one for my front door for about a year with no issues. This lock feels great when you hold it. A nice heavy feel. Something you would want for a dead bolt. It has four ways to access your home. 1. With the key. Which you should keep on your keychain just incase the batteries die. 2. The pin pad. 3. RFID cards. Old hotel keys work great. 4. Through the app. One thing I didn't know was to get the key pad to light up you need to touch it with your palm. Not just a touch with your finger. The install was a breeze. I just removed the old lock and put this one on. There is a step that requires you to drill a hole through your door for a screw. But I opted not to do this. The reason for this screw is to ensure that the top part of your lock is pushed firmly to the door. But as my doors are covered and I don't have to worry about water getting in there it was an unnecessary step. Setting up the lock was easy. Just download the app and follow the instructions. One thing I like about this lock is it doesn't have any built in wifi. I just don't feel comfortable having it connected to wifi and somebody being able to hack it. But if this is a feature you would like to have they do sell a hub separately that offers this feature. This lock is a heck of a deal for just $65. Give it a try and you wont regret it. ... show more

  • Directions worded awkwardly
Color: Satin Nickel Style: Square Smart lock
I think had I used the instructions within the main manual and the app guide and avoided the one-page quick start guides, it would've been much less confusing. The quick start instructions were so awkwardly written, and seemed to negate what the main guide stated, that I had to reset it. Even that part took a minute, as I was pressing the privacy button versus using the tool to press the reset button under the battery compartment. The picture on the quick guide shows the diagrams "door opens right" and "door opens left" from the perspective of the interior of the home, but the app shows pictures from the outside. Despite entering and using my own key code on day 1, on day 2 the code was no longer working. It would not allow me to reset it using the original master code of 123456. After much frustration, I discovered the code about 4 clicks deep in the basic settings in the app. I do not recall reading that anywhere in the main guide. There seems to be some disconnect between the app instructions and the written guide. All's well that ends well though, and I did get it figured out eventually. The lock does have some very cool features, and this is my first lock like this, so I only deducted 1 star for the fiascos with the instructions. It appears to be very secure, and I have no worries about anyone getting past it. ... show more
