  • Great concept but the dome-shaped seat is painfully hard
When I moved to an adjustable standing/sitting desk, I obtained this chair because it appeared to offer all the right blend of standing/leaning and stool-like sitting options. From a design and functionality standpoint, I was very happy with how it works -- I could lean on it or sit on it and the range of height adjustment was great! The integrated handle in the rear of the seat was useful, and I liked the width of the Pro model. But for those times I chose to actually sit on it or even lean for any length of time, the inflexibility of the cushion combined with its dome-like shape led me to feel considerable pain in middle of my rear end. I'm not dealing with any physical limitations or injuries and I am not overweight, so I'm talking about just plain failure of the sitting surface to flex in response to normal sitting. All the pressure is in the center, which is just not natural. If the seat material was just slightly more flexible so that putting one's sitting weight on it caused it to flatten in the center, it would be ideal. But seats that push up in the middle just cannot be comfortable. I realize that a leaning chair needs to provide some rigidity and that durability might be sacrificed if it was made more soft, but we are talking about a painfully hard surface. I just couldn't use it as-is, which was a great disappointment because of all the other things I liked about it. So I thought to myself, "I'm a very handy person with tools -- maybe I can remove the seat cushion and adjust the firmness somehow. Maybe I can remove some of the foam in the center." That is when I discovered the reason this seat is delivered fully assembled: there is absolutely no way to take the seat cushion apart from the seat base without destroying it. Or at least none I could find. So I contacted Varidesk support to find out one of two things: how I could take the seat cushion off OR how I could return it. First, I learned that I had just passed the number of days to return it for a refund so returning it was out. I had let it sit in the box before after it arrived so I used up half of my precious return time before learning its fatal flaw. I owned this thing now. Second, I learned that no one at Varidesk appears to know how to take the seat cushion off or was willing to share that information with me. And I really tried to learn it, first by emailing and then by calling -- asking to be transferred to other people, persisting courteously until I was talking to the right person. First I was told that removing the seat would void the warranty to which I replied -- well you just told me I can't return it and I'm telling you I can't use it, so why not help me turn it into a usable thing? Sorry, we can't help you to disassemble it I was told. Varidesk must know they have a problem with this design because I cannot imagine another reason for just plain denying reasonable assistance to an owner. All I want to know is how to take the thing apart without breaking it, and they just shrug. Wow. So now I'm trying to sell it as "Used". But then comes the other hard news -- shipping this thing fully assembled is a pricey nightmare. My big mistake here was not keeping the original box. In my excitement about all the good things I observed with this chair during the first week or so using it, I tossed the huge and heavy-duty box. Packaging this chair costs about $30 at the UPS store and I've learned that shipping it in the continental U.S. is about $70. Try recovering that cost when selling the chair to someone else! So yeah, consider very carefully if this chair is perfect for you during your fleeting 30-day guaranteed return period because if you end up like me paying $250 for a beautiful but unusable chair that cannot be modified, you are stuck with it! ... show more

  • Great idea but not durable
Color: Black Style: Essential Active Stool
I love the idea of this stool and it's a great addition to the Vari desk. However, I've had it less than a year and all of the screws holding the plastic to the bottom of the seat have popped out. They happened randomly where I kept finding a screw here a there and couldn't figure out where they came from until finally the last one popped out and the base fell off. Now, the only way to adjust the seat is to pick up the base and line it up so I can push the button. I've tried to get a response from the customer service but haven't heard anything back due to "high volume". ... show more

  • Decent Chair - screws come loose and hydraulic creeps
Color: Black Style: Essential Active Stool
Decent chair - picked it up when it was on sale. It works for a standing desk to lean against as it pivots and moves with you. The only complaints are the four screws that hold the cushion top to the rest of the unit come loose and after a while can't be tightened as they start to strip the material they go into. In addition, after a weekend, the hydraulic is up an inch or more from where I set it the Friday before...it slowly creeps. There are probably better or as good of options out there....paying for the name in this instance. ... show more

  • Questioning long-term durability, but Varidesk was responsive
Color: Black Style: Essential Active Stool
I have had a Varidesk adjustable desk for several years, and it has been very high quality. Bought this Vari Stool to reduce leg strain from standing for long periods. The stool is not as comfortable as sitting in a nice office chair would be but I expected that. It does generally relieve the stress of standing for long periods so I am generally satisfied with it. However, the screws underneath the seat keep falling out despite repeatedly screwing them back in. As a result, I am concerned about the long-term durability of the stool. Update on 11/10/22 -- An update on the four screws underneath the seat. The plastic around three of them has cracked partially or all the way around the screw. Two of the screws now appear to be countersunk. The third one will probably be the same way soon. Not sure what happens when the plastic has cracked all the way around all four screws. I assume the seat may be lose or come off and the stool may be useless. Paid too much for it to last less than a year. Update on 11/18/22 -- Varidesk provided a replacement so i appreciate them standing behind their product. Hopefully, this one will hold up better and not have the same issue. ... show more

  • Sturdy but not comfortable
Color: Black Style: Essential Active Stool
I tried sitting on the chair, but I can only do short amounts of time 5-10 minutes as it's not comfortable at all.. I use a standing desk and if going late would use the chair to ease up on my legs, but now I just rest a knee or foot on it. I like the height adjustments, and feels well made, putting it at the lowest setting the kids can use. ... show more

  • Love it
Color: Black Style: Essential Active Stool
I love this stool! I rock back and forth when I stand up, so this is great for me when working at my stand up desk for 8 hours. Plus it makes your core work! Helps with not shortening your hip flexors. Agh I really love it ❤️

  • Love using it with my Vari Desk!
Color: Black Style: Essential Active Stool
Sitting for hours straight was becoming uncomfortable & making my knees hurt from being bent all day. This stool has been a game changer! It is surprisingly light yet sturdy. I use it at the lowest height to lean on & stretch my legs out. The wobble effect makes it easy at any height to lean and grab items from the other side of my desk and it helps keep my body active while working. I love that I can easily adjust the height of the seat as I change the height of my desk throughout the day. I even use it at its highest setting and rest just one leg on it to lean against it as I stand. Note - this is not a "comfy" chair, I still use my office chair when I just want to sit and relax. ... show more
