  • Fantastic little instrument, very impressed
The media could not be loaded. For reference- I've been playing banjo for years, and my 7 year old son has recently become interested in learning how to play but he can't reach all of the frets on my full size instrument. I bought this one so he could use it to learn on, and I was worried that it would be a toy, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that this is a really solid little banjo. The build quality is great, a few little things here and there I could nitpick but nothing that affects the sound or playability so I won't even bother mentioning them. A few things to point out that I didn't see mentioned in other reviews (or I think other reviews got wrong): - You need to tune this banjo to at least open A, I have mine tuned to C. standard G tuning is too low and you'll get string buzz and unwanted bending when fretting notes- just not enough tension on a scale this short, has nothing to do with this specific banjo. You could switch to higher gauge strings and tune to G though if you wanted to. - the head on this is an authentic Remo WeatherKing. I saw another review dismiss the head as a 'cheap plastic head', which is misleading. - The banjo comes pre-strung for convenience, but the bridge is not yet installed for obvious reasons. If you have no experience setting up a banjo I strongly recommend taking it to a music store or finding somebody who knows what they're doing. If you already know how to set up a banjo there's nothing new here- takes 30 seconds to get everything intonated properly and you're off to the races, but if you are buying this as a gift for someone or getting it to learn on you're gonna hit your first major road block right here then come back and write a bad review about how it sounds out of tune on higher frets and make yourself look silly. - similar to the last comment, if you're not experienced with banjos (or stringed instruments in general), there's a period of 'elasticity' with the strings once you string it up and tune it for the first time. the first several days you setting up your banjo you'll need to constantly adjust your tuning until the strings stop stretching, but they will eventually stabilize. You can, of course, pre-stretch your strings but I won't get into that here. If you can't "keep it in tune" this is likely why, just keep tuning it and wait a while. Anyway, long story short- I bought this for my 7 year old and I find myself playing it more than my full size banjo because it's so light and convenient. I recommend playing some clawhammer songs on it while Tuned to C- sounds like a little hillbilly ukelele :) ... show more

  • A cute little instrument, a good value for the money
Size: 28 Inch Style: Portable Banjo with Tone Ring
For $199, I have to say this little guy is fantastic. I've been playing clawhammer close to 15 years and bought this so I can take it with me on solo travel trips. Sure, the shorter neck and tiny frets take some getting used to, but I adapted very quickly and can whale on this thing. I'm not sure how it would be beyond the 5th position though--higher up the neck it starts to sound really tinny. Because of the string length I tuned mine to open C: which would be (1-5) G, E, C, G, C, so it's high pitched anyway. You can also play in double F tuning; G, F, C, F, C (normal banjo would be double C tuning) with no difficulty. A lot of the tunes I know transitioned well to this banjo. I read a couple reviews where the complaint was it doesn't stay in tune--I've owned and played close to a dozen banjos in my life and I can tell you they practically never stay in tune consistently; it's the nature of the instrument. It stays in tune well enough for me, anyway. It's not really loud but it's loud enough--the resonator helps a ton. Anyway, you can tell I'm pretty happy! ... show more

  • I was pleasantly surprised.
Couple things on 26 inch travel banjo. I've been playing guitar for over 15 years. In that 15 years I've played anything from first act guitars from Walmart to high end PRS guitars. With that being said this was a pretty pleasant surprise. It plays well, I enjoy holding it, and it actually has a very nice tone to it. Now then first thing, when I got the box I was terrified, half if it was crushed and mangle. I saw the reviews of the neck being busted during shipping. I opened it and it was fine the banjo box was undamaged. I opened spent a few minutes inspecting the quality and setting it up. The fret board was incredibly dry, applied two coats of lemon oil, it was better but not perfect. I applied oil again a couple days later it's starting to look a lot better. Next after the first couple days when I started to actually play on the neck rather than just doing rolls I found that the fret wires are finished super great, and are a little rough. However the neck is so small I don't think it will be too much a problem. But now that I know this I'm gonna have to try and finish them a little better when I got to re-string it. Is this banjo the best thing money can buy, no but it doesn't have to be either. This is probably one of the best starter instruments I've played and I'm excited to continue to learn and eventually move into a full size banjo. Which when the time comes if I can't find one locally, I'll probably be buying a vangao until I'm really ready to dump the money into a Deering or a Washburn. Also it will be perfect for taking on the road, when I'm out of town. That's all I got for now. ... show more

  • Great banjo, great price! Love it!!
Size: 28 Inch Style: Portable Banjo with Tone Ring
I play for the fun of it and this is the perfect size to sit on a shelf next to my chair .. I pick it up often. I use a ukulele stand. It was very easy to set the bridge. I’ve only had to retune once, it holds a tune well. I thought I was going to want it restrung for open G but the open C tuning is just fine. Easy to play, the frets not as deep as full size banjo. A lot lighter but heavy enough to feel sturdy. (I’m 61 years old, female. My left shoulder gets tired on my big banjo :/ ) Awesome deal too! Very nice padded case and extra stuff! ... show more
