  • Awesome filter! BUT air pump and line required
Pattern Name: Green Double Sponge Filter
We bought Alex (the axolotl) a new sponge filter after his regular starter filter broke. I have fish experience but this is our first aquatic amphibian so I wanted to make sure I got him something stronger than a Walmart brand anyways. After reading reviews I picked an air pump line in my order however, I expected there to be some sort of motor in the filter and to my surprise I was very wrong. This filter ONLY includes: plastic filter casing, 4 baggies of media balls, 4 sponges, 2 suction cups. But no instructions (I mean… it’s kind of dummie proof if I can figure it out in under 10min) you WILL need to buy an AIR PUMP and AIR LINE/TUBE. I also read that someone had experienced a chemically smell before a random illness attacked her fish school, due to this I ran everything under extremely hot water and allowed to cool before placing it in my tank. This is probably something you should always do anyways, no matter the filter… We found the spout could be either over or under the waters surface, and the colors really did bring a lot of life to the tank. Overall we are very satisfied- after a week of no filter, and a late night 85% water change, I expected the water to be a foggy grey hue, but this morning it actually looks awesome! Warning-do not put the foam in or on a Sandy surface, I know “why the hell would you do that?” Well, I did but I did smartly and watched it closely for the first three minutes and noticed it did pick up ALOT of sand so I quickly moved it up a bit and as long as it’s not ON the sandy, the sand is heavy enough to stay in place for the most part One month update: I watched the filter for about 20minutes the other day to figure out what the weird sound was in my fish tank, it didn’t take me long to find that the bottom half of the filter was loose, while many have said there’s fell apart, I was determined to find out why. My seams were leaking air. This filter is built of plastic, ceramic media, and 2 sponges. That’s it. No glue is to be found, and the fittings fit well with notches ingraved, showing me this was an error on my part. After washing the plastic throughly and wiping it down to make sure there was no algae build up, the leaks were all sealed and my tank was once again in clean condition within the hour! I swear by this filter now, our aoxies’ tank looks fabulous and we will more than likely stick with this filter. Updated pictures as well to show my tank one month ago and then again today. ... show more

  • WOW!! This filter is AMAZING!!
Pattern Name: Black Single Sponge Filter
I love this filter!! Cleared my water in a very short time and is very low profile. It came with an extra sponge and ceramic media balls. My Betta loves it and he doesn't get blown around from the current like he did with the in tank filter he had.

  • Cleared my shrimp tank by 3rd day! Be patient.
Pattern Name: Green Single Sponge Filter
Tried a couple of internal filters but had no luck keeping my tank cleaned even for the week. No luck with the black internal sponge filter nor small hybrid sponge/biomedia both purchased from AMZ. I was changing the water every wk. This hobby shouldnt have to be that much work. Decided to browse all over AMZ for a suitable sized filter to try. Finally I think I found a keeper. Ideally I wished it was smaller and less bulky in appearance, but it works so hey. I currently have a jumbo glass container to house shrimps, snails, cories, and endlers. Small bioload overall, but my ramshorns are the biggest problem, leaving cloudy waters within the week (I don’t overfeed). For now, I was surprised to actually get much more visibility into my tank. It is like having an updated TV with higher resolution. My water used to be clear with the old filter methods but overtime, those filters stopped being as effective despite cleaning with every tank maintenance. Hopefully this will stay functional for a long time. My shrimps been clinging onto the sponge filter ever since I swapped my filter. Noise - barely noticeable. Output - depends on your air pump. Mine is non adjustable so outflow is not too strong. Set up - super easy straightforward. No manual needed. Sponge is green colored which helps me keep an eye on my shrimps. Would prefer black spronge tho. Try it for yourself! Good stuff ... show more

  • Great filter
Pattern Name: Green Single Sponge Filter
Great at filtration, and it's great that it has the sponge and the media to help hold in beneficial bacteria. That being said, the sponge is a pain to clean and seems to foul up easily (and I'm out of replacements - need to order some more). The sound is really dependent on your air pump so I just gave it a 5. ... show more
