  • Convenient Smart Lock
I'm such a big fan of this lock. I don’t write reviews often and I've only had the lock for a month and some change at this point so maybe I'll consider making a year update after having way more experience with it, but my initial month of impressions has been very favorable. The reviews definitely had me feeling concerned that this lock wouldn't even be worth trying. I tend to look at the positives and negatives to see if there are any trends and similarities in what people are positively and negatively experiencing. Definitely had some concerns about whether the fingerprint method even worked, battery life, auto locking, wi-fi functionality, and motor drive. Our entryway has a front door and then you have to go up a set of stairs so I knew the version that needs to connect to a bridge wouldn’t work for me. I read a lot of complaints about the lock not functioning well if it isn’t super close to the bridge and I have no outlets close to my front door so that pretty much left me with the version with built-in wifi. I installed the U-Bolt the morning my wife and I were about to move into our new place. I didn’t really measure anything before installing the lock and just hoped it would all fit haha. Luckily the door was standard I guess and everything fit in its respective spot. The door's hole is slightly off and the provided U-Bolt strike is so well-fitted and precise that I realized the door had to be at a certain alignment for the lock to close properly. That definitely would become a bigger issue over time, so I took their strike off and just left the hole open with the door's original cover (the picture included kinda shows what I mean). I love the different methods of entry. My wife and I have thumbprints, codes, and the apps on our phones all linked. Using the code is pretty easy and reliable. Love that there’s a backup key in case of anything and that the key entry itself is basically hidden. Thumbprint so far has been amazing and works really well for my wife and me. This was a big concern on my end because it was such a huge selling point, but kept reading about its unreliability. After a lot of usage over just this first month, I can comfortably say that it has worked perfectly for us as long as our fingerprints are in their normal dry state. If it’s raining and my fingers get wet, it won’t work. If I just lathered hand sanitizer on, it won’t work. If I went for a run and have sweaty fingers, it won’t work. I just automatically switch to pressing unlock on my watch or using my code If I know my fingerprint won’t be ideal for the scanner. I don’t find it that annoying cause the beauty of this lock is having multiple methods of unlocking that are all relatively convenient. I think fingerprints is the king of convenience though so I always opt for that when I can. I keep a microfiber cloth near the door that I randomly will grab and wipe the thumbprint reader as well which may be helping with not having many issues. Another thing to note is that you do have to press your finger against the thumbprint scanner with a specific amount of force and firmness that I wasn’t initially expecting. I’m very used to Apple’s touch ID where lightly tapping my finger does the job so I think that was something that initially threw me off trying to use my thumb lightly and failing at first. I have the U-Bolt set to auto-lock immediately when closed and it does just that as soon as the door is shut. Considering this is a new lock I tend to do a quick check every time I leave just to make sure that It’s actually locked, but it also makes a pretty audible locking sound when it’s correctly locking so I’ve started trusting that sensory confirmation. The door sensor provided works well to make sure the door doesn’t auto lock when it’s even slightly ajar. There is also a slightly low-level beeping sound the unit makes when the door is left open. The only issue I’ve faced is that the U-Bolt doesn’t like when someone tries to lock it themselves. It gets confused and starts to unlock and lock over and over again. I usually have to wait for it lock again, then manually unlock it myself, open the door, close the door and then it’ll auto-lock itself as usual like it’s been reset. I haven’t tried to troubleshoot this since it’s not a huge deal to me, but I could see it being frustrating to not be able to lock the door yourself just because you have auto lock enabled. The lock should ideally recognize that you’ve locked the door and not need to do anything. I am curious if having mine set to immediately auto-lock could be a part of the issue, but like I said not a big enough deal for me to actually troubleshoot since I like that it locks itself so immediately. I installed it with the provided batteries. Checking the app it says the battery life is still high, but it’s only been a month and some change so that should be expected. I’ve seen reviews saying the batteries need to be replaced within weeks so I can dispel that notion a bit from my experience so far. I remember it being noted either in a video or review I read that Auto Unlock (where it unlocks when your phone gets close) drains battery life quickly so I have that turned off since I don’t find it all that necessary with the thumbprint access. Also, keep in mind that I installed this lock right before moving into a new place so this lock has seen a ton of unlocking and locking action during it’s first month of life with all the logistics of moving in. Overall this lock has been great so far. The only thing left that I am on the eye out for is if there will be any motor issues. I’ve read a bit of users experience where the motor that drives the bolt started failing and needed to be replaced. Will this effect most U-Bolt’s? Is their warranty and customer service actually effective if a customer needs help? I can't answer any of that from my own experience, but so far really enjoying this lock and its convenience is appreciated. ... show more

  • Gave up - Does not work with T Mobile Internet Home and died in cold weather.
Update (December 18, 2022) - Dead After connecting to Unifi AP, my Ultraloq started to connect to the WiFi. But that was until the weather started to go below 50 degrees. My device is outside but it is protected by a storm door and it's not even January. First, the fingerprint sensor stopped working. Then my Ultraloq would 'hang' and I had to use the key. Eventually, the device stopped turning on. I took out the batteries for an hour, tried a hard reset, and installed new batteries but nothing helped. I tried to exchange with Amazon but they aren't allowing that. And knowing how painful it is to replace it with U-Tec, my only choice is to return it. My interior-facing Ultraloq (with Wifi bridge) is working OK so I am contemplating moving that to the exterior-facing door and see how that works. Maybe this works OK in warmer climates, or I ran into a bad batch of units. But my experience has been just terrible. I also owned Nest Lock that faced outside (without a storm door) for years and I did not have these issues. So this unit is going back to Amazon for a refund. Update (Nov 6, 2022) - Got the device to work: I received my new device from Amazon several days ago. This device is certainly better. What I noticed was that the app is connecting to the device via Bluetooth but not WiFi. I can unlock it when I am near but not from far as the WiFi is still having issues. At least when I walk up to the device, I can connect to it. Using my own WiFi gear. In short, this version of Ultraloq has issues with T-Mobile Home Internet's WiFi. If you have T-Mobile, your device will stop responding shortly after the setup. If you put your own WiFi (connect to the ethernet), set up a 2.4 GHz-only channel, and disable all the fancy features, this device will be OK. I was trying to use T Mobile's Home Internet system's WiFi for everything. To isolate this issue, I set up my Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro router and Unifi access point and now this door lock is working OK: - Does not work with a mixed network (has to be 2.4ghz only) - This is a well-known issue and the app even says this clearly. I simply changed that endpoint to 2.4ghz only. Your router can support both. Just create a new WiFi channel that's 2.4 GHz and you will be OK. Some routers are wonky and you may need to split all your channels to be either 5 ghz or 2.4 ghz. - With my own WiFi, I have a dedicated network for the IoT. In the case of Ultraloq, it has issues with 801.11r, known as "BSS Transition" or "Fast BSS Transition". This is used by the Access Point management to steer devices to AP and only is useful if you have multiple APs. (e.g. to balance out traffic) and enabled by default on the Unifi APs. BSS Transition settings are known to be problematic with IoT devices. So I disabled it and WiFi unit is working great. - To change the WiFi, you do need to be physically next to the device and change them one at a time but you do not need to 'reset' the device. For the first time, I can connect after rebooting my U-bolt after it's been up several hours. My take: While Ultraloq could easily say "It's your WiFi issue". But this is a home security system where features rely on WiFi so that's not acceptable. While I was able to isolate the issue, not everyone here worked at a networking company, tweaked WiFI (DD-Wrt, etc), or has $800 network gear lying around to isolate the problem. Now that the product appears to be functioning properly (at all times), I will be updating after several weeks of use. Update (Nov 1, 2022): I called them to ask about the after-purchase support. He begrudgingly admitted this happens a lot and recommended I email them and someone would get back to me to collect more information. He agreed that returning to Amazon would be a lot less hassle. I am returning the unit and see how the second one works. But I am also going to check the other unit and see if people are complaining. First Review: If you want something fancy without the support, then go with these guys. The tech on the phone was friendly but all they can do is troubleshoot. If you need an actual replacement, you have to reach out to their shadow group with no phone call or email and they may reach out to you when they feel like it or ghost you. But this is a $300 lock to your home and I think they should be responding quickly. Details: I have 2 versions of this lock. I bought the integrated WiFI (this one), and the other one with the Bridge. After spending time with the support resetting the device (again), the device just stops talking on Bluetooth or Wifi. I also noticed a YouTuber who said he had issues. So I believe they are having quality control issues. If you run into this issue, immediately return to Amazon as the U-Tec return is extremely slow or unresponsive. But I have to ask myself, can I live with a locking device sold by a company that ghosts customers when you need them? I am thinking hard about it. Details: I prefer to save the seller money so I try hard to go through them whenever possible. When an item is swapped, the merchant is charged for the return and new shipping/processing. After the call with their tech support (After waiting for 20 minutes on hold, I resorted to a callback, which came back quickly), they sent me a link as they are not authorized to handle discussing further support and potential replacement component as necessary. I've completed all the information (serial number, app version, firmware, etc) twice but I have not heard anything in several days. (No emails, or phone calls). There's no phone call on the page and you will get redirected to this link and told to wait. So I am resorting to Amazon as they will turn this thing around quickly and not make me run around. I can't say whether this lock is good or bad because it's disconnected 90% of the time. And the device goes offline (the outside control works), so it's impossible for me to program it without constantly taking the battery in and out of the unit. I did mention another YouTuber complained about similar issues and regret trying to troubleshoot and should've simply returned it. If I did not have the other u-bolt pro with the WiFi bridge, I would probably say this is a terrible device. But the WiFi bridge works really well and the built-in WiFi is junk. Especially since it costs more money and this is a $300 device, it's truly disappointing. ... show more
