  • Essential For Unifi Networks, Management Heart Of A Unifi Deployment. Outstanding User Interface Essential For Unifi Networks, Management Heart Of A Unifi Deployment. Outstanding User Interface
Pattern: Cloud Key
The cloud key is the central part of the Ubiquiti Unifi managed network system. Ubiquiti offers a cloud version of the Cloud Key, but I guess I'm old school and want to keep my management mostly in-house. I have used this with 2 clients. One was a couple of unifi switches and half a dozen access points spread across 2 networks connected via VPN. Setup was easy after actually reading instructions and watching a few YouTube videos. The next client was a 2 building wifi infrastructure setup. It had 24 unifi AC Pro access points, a 5 16 port unifi PoE switches and a 24 port unifi switch spread across 2 3 story buildings adjacent to each other. Setup was super easy after the first one and each access point was configured within minutes of setup. The cloud key is brilliant. It's PoE powered (or optionally via a AC adapter) and has a microSD slot which came with a card (for backups). The web interface and remote access capability facilitate management off-site. Device discovery works great and makes deployment so quick and easy. Monitoring lets you ID problems and overloaded access points. It's been a great troubleshooting tool. The cloud key is the management beating heart of a unifi network. One thing to be aware of: make a backup of your cloud key!!! I found that on 2 occasions cloud keys required a reset and restore after nasty power failures. It doesn't take a long time, so do and It could save your proverbial bacon. Oh yes, when you make changes make another backup. Going from more old-school network management to the beautifully integrated Unifi system was a bit of an adjustment and learning curve. Once I "got it" it's my first choice for installation with more than a couple of access points. ... show more

  • LOVE IT
Pattern: Cloud Key
DISCLAIMER: Ubiquiti sent me a Cloud Key free of charge if I agreed to write a review. I’ve been using the Cloud Key for a few days now. My impression of it so far is very positive. As expected from the UniFi line, it pairs nicely with my Unifi Security Gateway, PoE+ switch, and AP PRO. As of this writing (07-09-2016) my only minor issue with the Cloud Key is the lack of advanced options in the controller UI, though that is more of the controller firmware than the Cloud Key itself. Most of the advanced options are already available in the controller beta firmware so I’m confident Ubiquiti will really flesh out the capabilities of the Cloud Key and their whole UniFi line. For those that don’t know, the Cloud Key is a small SoC (system-on-chip) that can run the UniFi controller software. It’s a GREAT alternative for those that don’t have a server racked or don’t really have a need for one. For those that do, just run the UniFi controller on the server. The GUI runs smooth, provides a lot of nice stats for your LAN/WAN, and makes basic management of your other UniFi devices a breeze. It even comes with a MicroSD card for those that are comfortable with the CLI and would like to save configs/other miscellaneous things to it. Speaking of which, if you are familiar with Linux you will feel at home on the CLI since almost all of the UniFi devices are running a Debian derivative (at least from what I can tell). TL;DR – Do I recommend the Cloud Key? If you don’t have a server racked, 100% without question. It’s a great little tool for the price (<$100). I’ve had no issues with the device and it’s made this network engineer very happy. I love when things are simple, cheap (in price, not quality), and just work. ... show more

  • A must-buy for Unifi device owners
Pattern: Cloud Key
This device is a must if you run any Ubiquiti Unifi device. It is essentially a tiny always-on web server that runs the Unifi Controller software. Trust me, you'll need this. Don't be bothered with running the same (and free) software on a Windows PC. The PC version is very unstable, and it is hard to set up. As of this writing, the PC software does not work with JRE 9. I had to downgrade Java to version 8 on my Windows 10 PC. The PC software also requires manual opening up ports on Windows Firewall, but there is no documentation on which ports need to be opened. Even after much hassle to get it working, it will only run for a while before crashing. This device here, on the other hand, provides the same functionality, but it is plug-and-play. It is always on. Rock solid for a week since I started it up. It manages all of the Unifi devices on the same network. Since it is always on, it collects statistics of each device and connected client. For its price and what it does, it is a great value. ... show more

  • Great device, needs specific power
Pattern: Cloud Key
I bought the Unifi Cloud Key to use in my home network setup. Currently it is managing 2 Unifi UAP-AC-Lites. I've used Ubiquiti products in the past and I've always had mixed emotions about them. I work in the Server Administration end of the technology field, but prior to that I was also doing network support. I've supported the 1st gen UAP AC in a business environment and that made me despise Unifi products. Unstable firmware and nonexistent support. It was very frustrating whenever we would have problems. Yet, I still had high hopes for utilizing Ubiquiti in my home network setup one day. The Cloud Key comes in a small box with a short 3 inch Ethernet cable and minimal instruction manual. It would be nice if this guide also gave you a place to go for a more detailed/in-depth manual online. Perhaps troubleshooting info. But there is nothing further online that I've found. The quick start guide does walk you through the setup fairly easily though. I ran into issues though that I'd like to outline for anyone else to help them to avoid or provide them with a few steps if the issue does arise. Hopefully my mistake will help someone else if they find themselves in the same predicament. If you are not using a PoE switch for the Cloud Key, the Quick Start Guide mentions in small text to use a USB charger with 5V minimum 1A. This exact power output is very important. Having not noticed that text I initially used a 5V with 0.7A USB charger. It allowed me to setup the Cloud Key and it ran for about 10 mins before I lost connection to it and was unable to connect back up to it though the status light was on. After removing the power cord and trying to reboot it the initializing light would blink but never boot. Cue 3 hours of internet searching, resetting, and rebooting. If you unplug the Cloud Key and hold the reset button and plug it back in, continue holding until the light blinks white and blue. This enters the Cloud Key into an "Emergency Restore" state. The default IP address of the Cloud Key's Emergency Restore page is 192.168.1.30 but it may be a different IP based on your network's DHCP settings. Once at this page you can reset the device to factory defaults, reboot, or upload a new firmware file. I tried uploading a new firmware file multiple times but it would never succeed. It kept rebooting before the firmware update finished successfully. Then I finally thought, "maybe this thing is rebooting because of a bad charger cable." That’s when I noticed the power rating info of the charger vs the Cloud Key requirements. Searched through my old USB charger cables and finally found one from my Chromecast audio that had the right power rating. Used that cord and entered the device into the "Emergency Restore" state and uploaded a new firmware file. After about 1 min, the Cloud Key rebooted and I was back to the original setup page. Setup the Cloud Key again and added my UAP-AC-Lites and its been running great since. I'm only giving 4 stars because although this device is great, simple to setup and leave hanging on a wall, I wish there was more troubleshooting steps to follow either in a manual or online. They could have also setup the Cloud Key to produce an error flash code for "low/incorrect power" and saved me a huge headache. ... show more

  • Great for MSPs to Manage Remote Networks
Pattern: Cloud Key
For $80, The Unifi Cloud Key (UCK) is one of the easiest ways for a Managed IT Service Provider to effectively and efficiently monitor a remote network - or the IT Professional who wants to have eyes on their home network at all times. My company has been deploying Ubiquiti Unifi network equipment for the past year or so. Not all customers run full blown servers and IT systems onsite at their locations so installing the software based controller isn't really an option. This controller picks up the slack and some. First thing to note, when configuring it, is that it picks up a DHCP address, so if you're adjusting the LAN IP scheme of your Unifi network from 192.168.1.1/24, change the USG's IP FIRST, then connect the UCK which will pull DHCP on the new scope from the USG. Then, you'll navigate to https://<UCK IP>:8443/manage, run through the set up, go to settings/network/LAN and changed the default IP scheme again. Adopt the USG and that's about it. We've been using UCK's since version 4.8 and they're now on 5.5.20 and Ubiquiti has made some great strides and improvements. With each firmware/controller version update come more features. We really like that the UCKs come included with MicroSD cards and an automatic backup feature - We go in and downloadthis gives us the peace of mind knowing that if anything happens, short of a fire, we'll have the ability to restore the controller quickly. That said, once you configure your Unifi network equipment, you do NOT need a controller for the network equipment to continue to operate. Each individual piece of equipment will retain its settings even if it loses connectivity with the 'cloud', unlike some other brands. ... show more

  • Especially Great And Great To Have From the Get Go.
Pattern: Cloud Key
You can manage your Unify devices with the same interface using free software on your computer, or you can use a stand alone Unix box, or you can use a cloud server or use the Ubiquity cloud server -- but many folks do eventually install this -- so if you are starting out and want to do best practices and save some future transition steps (and redundant set up time) just go with this from the get go. In some cases, running this controller instead of on your shared computer or via cloud just has its advantages -- would you prefer to access this remotely rather than need to leave another device running 24/7? And sometimes, the speed of response (for example, accessing a cloud server or waiting for you computer to wake up) can impact such things as "guest access screens". This plugs in anywhere handy on your ethernet network (it is the size of a slim remote control) and then it is constantly standing ready, for local or remote access commands. You can power it with a spare USB power cube & standard USB male A (from power cube) to USB male mini (into the cloud key) cord like you'd use to charge bluetooth headphones. Your devices can run (once set up) without the continuous need of any kind of controller, but when a firmware upgrade comes along, or you want to make changes (whether you have 3 or 300 Unify devices), the Cloud Key "controller" has the pieces to make it happen, with nothing else required. Even if not mandatory, this is a tool most Unify folks take advantage of and use without a second thought about getting, as if it were required -- and for homeowners who want to check from work or from errands, and pro installers who want to be able to troubleshoot multiple locations, it might as well be simply required. ... show more

  • Amazing. Be careful with your power source to avoid hang!
Pattern: Cloud Key
I am new to Ubiquiti equipments and just bought UAP-AC-PRO and Cloud Key to evaluate their equipment. I am amazed with good design and convenience of cloud controller. The size of Cloud Key is bigger than Fire TV stick, but still small enough and silent. This let you avoid having to have a dedicated server to install Unifi Controller software to manage your Unifi devices. You do not need to have the controller software always running for AP only, but you will enjoy easy access to your device anywhere. Highly recommended. One thing I have experienced is that this device hangs if you use inadequate USB power. I initially connected the device to USB port of my Asus router and the device experienced hangs after awhile. Once I used a dedicated USB power wall adapter, it worked like charm. I plan to buy USG and managed switch to fully replace existing devices in my home. ... show more

  • Super convenient
Pattern: Cloud Key
If you are thinking about getting this device then you are either in the Unifi camp (so get a cloud key already, jeez) or you are thinking about swapping over (you won't regret it, get a cloud key). I used to use the Unifi controller software installed on a laptop for network control/configuration, now a web browser on any machine within the network can do the job. This is a surprisingly big quality of life improvement. Even chromebooks work nicely. Only one real issue came up - I was running the latest "beta" control software on the laptop. The controller runs the most recent stable release. As such, the controller couldn't just load the laptop's configuration backup file. So, I had to reconfigure from scratch. That was a slight pain, but a blessing in disguise because I redesigned the network while I was at it. The previous configuration had evolved. Now the network is designed fresh and ready to evolve from a cleaner state. A complaint is that Ubiquiti's instructions seem to assume that the cloud key is part of a fresh network install. That's probably a bad assumption because so very many of us did the initial configuration on a PC/mac and are swapping over to the cloud key. The instructions should have a section on "adding to an existing network." That would have saved me many hours of my life. ... show more
