I bought this for my husband as a 26th wedding anniversary gift, of course he's picky and picked this model out so I made sure to get him the correct one. We have older cars and he likes to repair them himself and he said this is a useful tool to have. He loved it and said he can use this to find the air leaks in our house and garage so he can fix them and save us money on repairs. The following words are his review as he knows more about it than me. Happy husband here. This unit is really neat. My wife had a car issue where she said it would not go over 45 mph. The steering wheel was also shaking. This could be caused by a lot of issues but I heard the right front of the car ticking like a catylitc convertor makes when it's cooling down. I had just received this a few days before and took a reading of the front tire area and it was 400 degrees! I checked the opposite tire and it was only 108 degrees, so I knew I had a stuck caliper and repaired it. This could be used to check your wheels for dragging brakes that would be costing you lower gas mileage. For fun I checked the rear tires and they were within 4 degrees of each other and running cool. I then used this to look for cool spots in my ceiling and wow, you can actually see where the rafters are! The wall near the top of the ceiling looks to not be insulated well and I will have to go up there and better insulate it. This is very accurate as I can actually take a temperature reading on a human and see the results. It also does video which can really be useful to record a complete room in one shot versus taking multiple pictures. Would be cool if this had a microphone where you could record comments during the video, maybe on the TC006 version? Even did a test on an engine looking for any hot spots. This can be helpful finding a pulley bearing that is running hot or a cylinder that has a miss and is running cooler. This thing is built like a beast and should last for years. I know it will help me repair cars and save us money for years to come. I'm glad I told my wife this was the model I needed. Have had good luck with other Topdon products in the past too.

I was skeptical at first, lots of imaging cameras out there that claim to be the best, but this unit works wonderfully. For the money, don't expect anything better. Brands don't matter any more, go with whatever works and is well rated. Professionals use something the rest of us won't pay for occasional use so let's go with that for this unit. I can say it has a lot of options, is well built, and has high enough resolution for anything I'd consider using it for. Works great for finding thermal leaks, hot spots, potential failures in heat exchanges, you name it. Certainly recommend for all those looking for upper end value of entry-level consumer imaging cameras.

I'm bumping my rating up to 4 stars, simply because this device is so reliable and useful despite its shortcomings, which I described in detail in my original review. The 2 star rating was more a reflection of the misleading claims made by the seller (possibly my own misunderstanding of what they are claiming when they say "automatically lock the lowest and highest temperature points") the than the quality of the product, which is very good in my opinion. Its durability was tested when I slipped on ice and threw the thing as I was falling. It landed hard on the asphalt street, which had a couple inches of freshly fallen snow to slightly aid the impact, but I heard it hit the ground about the same time I did like fifteen feet away. I was hurting but I had to go find the camera. I quickly found it still powered on and covered in snow, so I immediately shut it off and brought it inside. After I got it all cleaned up, I couldn't find any damage other than a plastic piece that covers a couple screws was missing. Screen was fine, buttons worked the same, no issues whatsoever after that. I still wish they would update to software to allow you to lock in a specific temperature range, but I've learned to live with it the way it is. One suggestion I have would be to redesign the case so that you put the camera in and take it out by the handle. The way it is now you have to pull it out by the end with the camera and screen. I try to avoid touching those areas so it makes the case kind of useless to me. Maybe just make the case so that it fits in either way, rather than the custom fit. Original 2 star review (unedited): I knock off stars when the manufacturer makes claims about a product that are not true, or it doesn't function like they say. The critical issue I have with the TC005 is that I cannot lock the lowest and highest temperature point which the product description claims it can do. Lacking this one feature significantly reduces the usefulness, because any time you point the camera in a different direction the entire image readjusts to new hot and cold points within the field of view. I waited 7 months to review because I was optimistic that they would have released another firmware update by now to address this. I just checked their website and they have not. I have the latest firmware for my camera (2.3.11) Also the analysis software for Windows is a joke. Video analysis does not work. The documentation makes no sense. It is unfinished beta software. Also my pc would not recognize the device when connecting it to my pc with the supplied usb cable. I tried one of my own cables which also didn't work. I tried another of my own usb cables and my pc recognized the device. Unfortunately the software is so bad that there isn't much reason to connect it other than to transfer images. The infrared sensor itself varies from good to terrible, usually gets worse over time, kind of like it hazes over. There isn't a good way to calibrate it either. There is an "image calibration" procedure that zeroes out all the pixels, removing any burned in gradient or halos that develop (if the calibration is successful. It might take a few tries). However this calibration doesn't calibrate the temperature reading. Usually I'm looking for areas that are hotter or colder than their surroundings as opposed to measuring a precise temperature, so the unreliable temperature isn't that big of a problem, but I wish it was a little better. The device itself is well-made in my opinion. It feels solid, comfortable grip, able to access all buttons easily, and the display is fine. Also no battery issues. In fact I just turned it on for the first time in about a month the battery still has full charge. Since it has a good build quality, maybe there's hope that they will fix the software. Adding the temperature range lock would immediately increase my rating to 4 stars.

I own a shop, and have multiple thermal units over the years but this one is so far the best. Topdon has been putting some impressive hardware out (I have their jump box, and have used their diagnostic equipment as well) which is the reason I trusted this would be a good purchase. This has a long battery life, high resolution, and is easily used. My technicians have noted that it is essentially dummy proof, needing no training to use. It's got a good lense for short and long distances, and is useful when trying to find a misfire or electrical draw. Lately I've been using it to find air leaks in our shop since it's now air conditioned. Originally I was using a Flir PS32 for shop use and spotting animals. 15 years ago it was great, but modern resolution and refresh rate makes this now a wheel chock, besides having to put it to your eye. I then got a thermapp thermal that goes on your cell phone. When I bought it the app didn't work for about a year and a half which made it worthless. They finally updated it to where it'll actually work but went out of business. It works well but you have to have manual focus and someone's (old) Android. I'm glad we now have a solution in the shop for the techs that don't involve unnecessary steps or poor performance and is easily grabbed for use.

I had been looking at thermal imaging cameras to use in the shop to speed diagnostic times on complicated engine cooling systems. I didn't want to invest a lot so I was looking at cheap ones that attached to your phone but I'm really trying to not put anything work related on my phone anymore to stay separated from personal life and I'm already hard enough on a phone so I went with this one. I knew they could be helpful but I've realized all kinds of uses since like electrical issues, leak finding, thermal loss, catalytic converter diagnosis and way more. When it came I was just playing with it around the house and found so many air leaks, and diagnosed a bad water heater element that I didn't even know I had. Its good to measure how efficient your appliances may or may not be too. I love tools and gadgets but I have played with this thing for hours on end like a toy also. There are several settings that fit how you are using it. It seems to be pretty accurate from what I can tell comparing it with a infrared thermometer. You can take screenshots or videos easily or connect to a larger display. It's well made, water resistant and I have dropped it a few times so it's pretty tough. I even took it with me deer hunting to track blood trails. I can highly recommend this for many uses. The case is not included I picked that up from Harbor Freight

First let me say that I've had this product for a good while now and have had a chance to fully run it through it's paces. I'm what you would consider an upper level DIYer/ handyman that does jobs for family, friends, and the like. My main purpose for an IR camera is to detect heating and cooling leaks in my house, which is a double wide manufactured home. There are, however, lots and lots of additional tasks in which having this tool comes in extremely useful. I've used it to work on the HVAC of multiple vehicles, detect if components on a circuit board were drawing power when they weren't supposed to be, check the temperature of parts on a high end RC car, check if my home audio receiver was consuming power while in standby mode and much, much more. I seriously didn't think I would find so many uses for this IR camera and I'm very happy with my purchase. It really was money well spent. Previously I was using a laser thermometer and while it did the job(usually), being able to SEE temperatures at a glance has changed the game for me, cutting diagnostic times significantly. If you are on the fence about buying this guy(like I was), don't be! You WILL wish you'd have had it years ago. TOPDON has become one of the go to manufacturers of testing equipment and it's no secret why. The value of their products typically can't be beat. I also own an obdII Bluetooth scanner and it's also top notch and can do things my Innova 5610 can't, and it was 1/4 or less the price! Now I realize that the TOPDON TC005 isn't a "cheap" tool. But consider what you are getting for this price. A VERY full featured IR camera along with the ability to take pictures AND video of anything you're looking at. It automatically shows you the hottest and coldest spot in the frame you're looking at. You can adjust the color scheme to look like you're watching Predator or one of a half dozen other color combinations. One great feature I've only had a small chance to play with is the TDView software for Windows computers. It has a bunch of tools and features not available when using the TC005 in standalone mode. It's not just a screen mirroring app, although I'd does do that as well. I'm sure there are more features I could talk about and could compare it directly to a tool who's name rhymes with beer, but if you're looking to get the most for your money your looking at the right one. I've shared some screenshots I've taken so you can get an idea of the picture quality and I've only charged it once in the almost month I've had it and it gets used at least every other day!
