  • Way better than the name brand options!
**SHORT REVIEW** 2 of these Racks will fit on 53" Thule Wingbar Evos. We used them to carry 2 XL Malibu ocean Kayaks on top of a 2021 Kia Sorento. Super solid build quality. Easy assembly and loading. Price is unbeatable. **It did require us to get longer bolts to fit the wingbar evos with the rubber wind gaskets installed. We used m6x10 rather than the m6x8 that are included. **Extended Review** This is our first camping trip since Covid hit and we decided we wanted to get our own Kayak racks rather than borrowing my grandparents Suburban and Rack. We were wanting something that made it easier to put up and down and almost went with the Hullivators from Thule but felt that they weren’t a very sturdy looking design. My Dad happened to find these racks and we both fell in love with them.

We were originally going to mount them on my parents 2018 Yukon but discovered that it won’t work on their car because the way their crossbars mount they are at fixed points rather than adjustable placement. **THIS RACK REQUIRES ADJUSTABLE CROSSBAR PLACEMENT** Seeing as my 2021 Sorento has adjustable crossbars I volunteered. We have two Kayaks however and weren’t sure how wide of a bar I was going to need to make two of these mounts fit. We saw that they overhang the ends of the crossbars quite a bit and decided to gamble on a 53” bar. They fit perfectly up there with a few inches of play on all sides.

The build quality of this thing is superb. We are machinists by trade and know when corners have been cut. This thing looks and feels amazing. The bolts all of some pre-applied lock tight to keep everything from rattling loose. Though the included hex wrench is pretty cheap quality.

Now to get the base to mount onto our Thule Wingbar Evos with the T-slot we did have to grab slightly longer bolts to make this work. The rubber wind strip on the crossbars made it just slightly too tall to slide it on. All our local Home Depots were out of stock of the bolts we were wanting but thankfully we have a machine shop and raided the bolt department. M6x10 Bolts are the perfect fit. Those couple extra threads made all the difference and we were able to slide the base on with ease.

The top section of the rack then slides into the base and locks in.

You may need to loosen your crossbars to get the spacing right as when we first threw the rack up there one of them slid with ease while the other was catching. We loosened the crossbars and wiggled the placement around until both were sliding easily.

THIS THING DOES TAKE A TON OF EFFORT TO GET DOWN WHEN THERE IS NO KAYAK MOUNTED. You’re fighting the shocks that help make the kayak go up easily, so without that extra weight it can be a bit difficult.

When needing to raise it back up without anything mounted on it I found it helps to drape myself over the end of it while I push down and release the locks. It seems the release point it lower and if there isn’t any weight on it you can’t move the release locks.

There aren’t any locks to prevent theft but they would need to know how to remove the top sliding portion in order to get to the lower mounting bolts. I don’t think it’ll really be an issue. Though we have removed the top sliding section for the past week leading up to our camping trip and left the bases mounted up there.

My parents went up to grab the kayaks from our family cabin and gave the racks their maiden voyage back home. First time mounting them took them and hour and a half but that included getting the kayaks down from the rafters and fighting a stuck ratchet strap. We think once we load them up for our trip this weekend we can have them fully secured in 15 or so minutes now that we now what we are doing.
Easy strap placement as you can walk between the kayak and the car the place the strap on the back side. On the way home they opened our sunroof to see if anything shifted. My dad took it all the way up to 75mph and said they didn’t move at all. There was a slight whistle at 45 mph but it quickly went away once you went any faster.

Overall we LOVE these things. Be prepared to get stopped and tell people all about them because they definitely draw some attention.
Build quality is phenomenal, assembly is a breeze, and mounting is the same as any other rack. For the convenience it bring and at half the price of the name brands it’s a no brainer purchase! ... show more

  • Excellent, multi-function rack.
Color: Black
I bought this rack becuase I am no longer happy with the vertical rack I bought for use on the back of my 5th wheel RV. And since I had a trip planned where only one kayak would be needed I pulled the trigger on ordering this one. The package arrived quick and when I opened it I found it all nicely and securely packaged. Instructions were good and I probably spent a total of 20 minutes putting this together (taking my time and doing some other things in between). Once assembled i took it out to my truck to install the base and then to insert the rack into the base. My truck is tall, so I still had to use a step stool to get everything put on. The rack fit perfectly and I opted to the external u-bolts over the T-slot since this was not something I planned to leave on the truck fulltime. Once on i confirmed what the instructions said - you really need to put some force on it to extend it when empty. You need to pull out and down at the same time, which requres me to step up on something for the "out" part of the motion. If I just stand below it and try to pull down it will not work. This is not a problem for me. I know I have a tall vehicle so it's the price I pay. The last thing I did while installing was to put two large rubber strips on. They have a strip of REALLY THIN doublesided tape. Once installed the rack sat for a while. Later that day I had to go somewhere and when I got hom I saw that the two rubber strips had been ripped off by the wind. I think some thicker 3M VHB might have held better than what's on them. Aside from this the rack was fine. Loading and unloading a kayak made this thing 100% worth it. No more standing on something and trying to get it on top of my truck and then trying to secure it. This let me put it on and secure it while at a good, easy level. Releasing the latches and letting it swing up to the roof were the easiest part of loading it up. It was nice to be able to have this secured on the roof while still being able to tow my RV and it was also nice to not have the kayak on the back of the RV blocking my rear-view camera. Over the initial 2.5 hour trip (each way) the rack and kayak held securely and other than the expected added wind noise (even with no kayak) it was all good. I did reach out to the seller asking about a part number for the two strips that were ripped off. The initial response was great, but after my 2nd message I haven't heard from them in a few days. It's nothing major and does not impact the overall functionality. I've temporarly put some other rubber strips on there while I wait to receive a response. One thing that led me to get this rack over a competitor (that costs twice as much) is that this rack isn't just for kayaks. With the t-slots on the two main rails I'll be able to use my bike racks if I ever want to take my bikes somewhere and can't use the bed of my truck. I believe they have a basket that will work on this rack too, in case I ever need something like that. The added functionality swayed my decision in this direction (in addition to the price - not saying this is cheap becuase it is not, but I didn't want to pay almost $1000 for a single use rack). If you're on the fence about this item go for it. If your vehicle and not too tall and you can extend/close standing on the ground your experience will be better than mine. I still give it 5 stars in spite of the rubber strips not holding. I hope to be able to replace them once I hear back from the seller. ... show more

  • A few quirks.
What I like: 1) It's a great concept. There are compromises in the design, but they've made a good product. 2) It can handle a 17 foot rotomolded Wilderness Systems Tempest (65 lbs? empty). 3) On the road, the Kayak is well supported in the cradle, but bow and stern lines are essential. 6) Screws come pre-treated with blue thread lock (removeable/reusable). It would have been nice to have the same treatment on the U-bolts that hold the tracks to the rack cross bars. What didn't quite work for me: 1) One of the holes on one of the tower pieces didn't align with the threaded hole in the aluminum, horizontal, piece. There is a flange at the bottom of the tower piece that should be flat that wasn't. It took a combination of pounding the flange flat, grinding the edge of the flange to fit into the channel that receives it, and opening up the hole to make it work. Annoying for someone with a garage full of tools. If you are an apartment dweller, depending on the Allen wrench supplied to get this together, this would be grounds for returning it. 2) The packaging consists of a huge amount of cardboard. There must be a way of packaging this without having to fill a recycling bin with waste. I know, we're concerned about plastic, but this is a lot of cardboard. 3) The gas struts are clearly sized for the maximum capacity. There really should be an option to order by boat weight range, so a person with a 70 lb. boat isn't pulling down a strut sized for twice that. My wife, a longtime kayaker and nurse, can't pull it down empty. With a boat on the cradle, it's still quite a pull. 4) There's a need for some additional, diagonal, bracing on the towers and cradles. When you pull the cradle down, it's difficult to maintain perfectly equal force on both sides of the pull-bar. As you pull out and down, the rack is prone to twisting. Ideally, you should be able to pull something like this down with one hand. As it is, you really have to use both hands and watch the torque. I'll be adding some stiffening. As it stands, it would be easy to get the rolling cradle bound up in the channel it rides in. 5) There are two pieces of plastic rod that the pull handle fits over, and which the two long screws provided fit into. They are polyethylene, or something like that. With all of the welding performed to produce this, having plastic on major stress points is, in my opinion, a big mistake. I foresee one or both of the plastic pieces breaking somewhere up some dirt road where I really need to be able to get the boat on the rack by myself. This should really have been steel, welded in. Believe me, it takes some force to pull the cradle down when empty. Do this repeatedly, and I believe it will break. An unfortunate engineering decision. 6) The u-bolts supplied to attach the tracks to your car rack cross bars are undersize (in my opinion), at 6mm. I'll probably put some 8mm (5/16") u-bolts on instead, or find a different solution. Given the assembly challenge due to poor quality control (the misaligned hole) and the use of plastic in a high-stress part of the device, it is pretty well constructed. I've used it about 10 times, and find it far superior to J racks for transporting. Sometimes, when using J racks driving in a crosswind, a kayak will tend to move around in the rack. So far, this seems quite secure. This is a HEAVY device you're putting up on your car roof rack. If you are using two, at 40 lbs each and kayaks at 60 or 70 lbs each, be sure you don't max out your car rack capacity. ... show more

  • Makes loading my kayak so easy
Color: Black
I read a lot of reviews and researched other racks with lift assist before ordering this one. Reviews mentioned a few things that I will address here: 1. It is correct that you cannot easily remove the base of the rack from your vehicle. You can remove the actual rack that lifts up and holds your kayak, but the base itself has to be screwed on so it's not quick to detach and remove . Not an issue for me. I'm leaving the base on because I plan to use it weekly. 2. Some people commented they had a really hard time removing the removable portion of the rack, something about the hardware sticking and requiring grease, and the rack itself does say to use grease if needed. Luckily ours came off very easily, but removing it is a two-person job. 3. Your height and the height of your vehicle are factors in how easy this is to use. I am 5'6" and I drive an Expedition. I am not tall enough to be able to pull the rack down. There's a point where you first start pulling it out that it takes quite a bit of strength/leverage to get it moving, and with my height compared to my vehicle height, I can't do it without a step stool. I put one foot on a small step stool and the other foot on the running board for leverage and it comes down no problem. If your vehicle is shorter or if you are taller, you probably won't have this issue. My husband is 6' so it was easy for him. 4. Yes, when the rack is empty and you set the locks to the "open" position, it does want to pull up really fast. This is NOT a design flaw. This is user error (user not understanding the functionality of the rack). The rack is designed to pull itself up when it's holding the weight of a kayak so of course when it's empty it's going to pull up more quickly. You need to firmly hold the bar on the front when you set the locks to the open position, and make sure you keep your body clear of where the rack will go when it rises so you don't get hit. You just need to understand how it functions and manage the use of it accordingly. 5. The height relationship (your height vs the height of your vehicle) is also a factor in how easily you can get your kayak into the rack. It's a bit tough for me but I figured it out after a few embarrassing failed attempts at home, before I took it out for a paddle. 6. My husband assembled and installed this for me so I can't comment on how easy that is for an average person like myself. My husband is an engineer and very skilled with all things mechanical so the assembly was very easy for him. The installation took some effort but he did it fairly quickly. 7. Lots of reviews of roof racks talk about whistling noise. The only noise I experienced was the handles on the ends of my kayak banging against it. 8. My only complaint is the padding is not robust enough. It's pretty thin rubber that I don't believe is going to protect my kayak sufficiently when going over bumpy roads, which of course I will encounter a lot when traveling to places where I can reach a kayak launch. We will add some sort of additional padding to it to make sure my kayak is well protected. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase. I used it for the first time yesterday, on my own, and was able to unload and load my kayak on my own pretty easily. ... show more

  • DO NOT BUY THE TOOENJOY RACK WITH THE KOMSEPOR CAR RACK they are incompatible.
Color: Black
1 star initially to grab your attention. Both products seem like good products but Amazon has made a mistake by reporting that the tooenjoy kayak rack and Komsepor Car Roof Rack Cross Bars 55” are "Frequently bought together". They may be frequently bought together but they are not fully compatible and Amazon should not suggest that buying them together is normal. The ubolt and plate that hold the rack to the crossbars DOES NOT FIT. The plate's groove is narrower than the crossbar is wide. While this *should* work if it's tight enough, It's really not right. I have contacted tooenjoy support for help on finding a better plate or suggestions for better cross racks. Amazon's "Product Support" was unable to help, actually completely useless, a joke really. ... show more

  • Adapter Clamps are poor design.
Color: Gray
I have Toyota RAV4 with a luggage rack. The Carrier will not fit on the existing rack, so I had to buy the Roof Adapter to make it fit. This was in itself quite a project. The hardware included in the kit did not easily fit into the designed slots. In forcing one of the provided clamps to fit, it broke and so we were one clamp short. I resorted to going to the hardware store and buying C clamp bolts to bolt the Roof Adapter to my existing rack. With this arrangement I felt the Roof Adapter is more secure to my luggage rack. On the kayak carrier itself, I was able to assemble it without too much difficulty. However, once I installed on the Adapter and extended it to load the kayak the lift will not stay down without a load. I have to use a bungee cord hooked to the rack and to the vehicle to make it stay down. I have taken the kayak on the carrier to my local lake, and it stayed secure and tight both ways. I will next take it to the Colorado mountain lakes and see how it does at high speeds on the highway. ... show more

  • Fast and easy to use
Color: Black
I am the envy of all at the lake. Super easy to use once it's installed. I had a very hard time with the t-bolts. The square nuts and short screws were too short to use with a track that has wind inserts. I just could not get them in the track. I had to remove the inserts. I think a longer t-bolt where the head is what slides thru the track would have been better. Next year when I put it on again I'll try that. I think the inserts really help with wind noise. And now, I have to turn the radio up to drown it out. And fuel efficiency expectantly goes down. But, getting my kayak on my car is fast and easy now! ... show more

  • Clunky initial setup, but quality product overall
Color: Black
I got this mainly for my wife, who has rheumatoid arthritis but also wants to be active. Plus it helps save me after long days. We have a Chevy Traverse that sits really high, so this seemed like the best option. Building it was a little confusing since the directions had an illustration that said to keep the logo facing out, only thing is, the part in question didnt have any logo or sticker signifying left or right side which can been seen in the included pictures. Once I was able to figure that out the rest was a breeze. The whole thing is heavy but it can be broken down into two separate pieces that are relatively light. Though I am 6’1” and can lift 50 lbs really easily. So user experience may vary with that. I will have to buy the TooEnjoy cross bars at some point, but it’s fine for now. I like that it is built from strong steel. And it looks really nice and quality. I did struggle getting some of the rubber pieces on but after adding a few drops of dish soap it slid on the rest of the way no problem. So far I would definitely recommend ... show more
