  • Starts right up, sturdy, but with an issue on throttle
Size Name: 52cc Powerhead with 8" Auger Bit+12"...
So I bought this to drill holes to replace 10' by 8" lodge pole fence posts. I was surprised by the quality, surprised it started right up. Easy to carry balanced like an M60. Excellent bit Motor is powerful enough for Illinois dirt and easily cuts through 1-2" roots. Thicker roots do jam it, but the machine stops. One person can use this machine...but at my age I don't recommend it. Pitch of the screw is ok. You will need to extract the screw to empty holes, but for the price point a) the durability of the screw is fantastic b) the pitch is fine without spending $300 2 throttles. The inner throttle seems to stick wire causing the machine to continue running when in idle position. NOT spinning at full rpm, but rotating nonetheless. ... show more

  • Just what you need
Size Name: 52cc Powerhead with 8" Auger Bit+12"...
It works great for digging out holes. I have super rocky soil and this did a great job digging our holes for a fence project and bogged down when it hit rocks but worked out not to throw us. Great value for your money. Only downside is throttle stick sometimes

  • Time and Effort is not wasted!
Size Name: 52cc Powerhead with 8" Auger Bit+12"...
Using a post hole digger, shovel,.... is primitive. The Thunderbay Auger is proficiently effective. It is operated by one person or two people. Sturdy but light weight and handles with ease here in Florida

  • Great Value Auger
Size Name: 52cc Powerhead with 8" Auger Bit+12"...
I was very pleased with my purchase. I used it to dig holes to set deck posts below the frost line (42 inches). It started right up on first use and every time since. It's more powerful than I expected and rips through dirt easily. One can handle it alone, but the optional second set of grips for a partner is a great feature. It did everything I asked when digging. ... show more

  • This machine hates you.
Size Name: 52cc Powerhead with 8" Auger Bit+12"...
The Pros: It digs post holes like a demon and they are straighter than you can dig with a PTO post hole digger. It is half the price of the comparable Echo. The Cons: This machine loathes you and resents any happiness you have ever experienced. It wants to wring your lumbar vertebral discs like wet paper towels and then encourage the leftovers to traumatically evacuate your body in a bloody mist. At the best of times, you have to stabilize the power head away from your body until it is below knee level, then lift it up and down to clear the hole. If it binds on a rock or root, the handle will punch you in the gut, try to fracture your thumb, or both. The throttle cables like to slip into the throttle lever and stick so that the return spring can't bring it back to idle. You have to hold it with one hand as it thrashes in the hole and grab the throttle cable and pull it away from the throttle lever with your other hand. You can't let go or you'll have to wait for it to run out of gas. I have used some duct tape to keep that throttle cable from slipping, but it is a weak repair that I'll be forced to revisit frequently. Lastly, it is a cold starting machine. I have to cajole it for 5 minutes by carefully alternating between choking it for a pull or two, then turning off the choke for a pull or two to avoid flooding it before it will fire first thing in the morning. Final thoughts: In the end, it does what it claims at a budget price compared to other options. I think two man use would be much safer and comfortable than using it by yourself. Watch that dang throttle cable. Do not let your stubborn dad with a bad back anywhere near it. ... show more

  • DANGEROUS!
Size Name: 52cc Powerhead with 8" Auger Bit+12"...
I am not a small person and know how to use these machines. The throttle sticks at wide open and the only way to stop it is to turn it off. You can not slow it down so you pray that you can brace it against your leg, control it with one hand and hope you can hit the power button before it goes wild. Someone posted a video of the powerhead spinning in it hole it dug. The same thing happened to me. I took stick to try and jar the carburetor throttle and that did not work. I had to pry the machine out of the hole until the auger would spin instead of the powerhead. Extremely dangerous! This cracked my wrist and broke an expensive watch ... show more

  • Its a great tool, but definately 2 people definately needed for 8" auger
Size Name: 52cc Powerhead with 8" Auger Bit+12"...
For the price, this is an insane value. There is nothing fance about this machine, but its well made and reminiscent of the Stihl products we own. We dug fence post holes for deer fence, 2 feet deep and 8" wide in Virginia clay. It still taxed my athletic husband and me working in tandem to get them dug, there is a lot of torque! Were going to get a smaller auger and use it to dig plant holes for tomatoes etc, maybe that will be more of a one-person job. ... show more

  • Quality auger
Size Name: 52cc Powerhead with 8" Auger Bit+12"...
With pre-mix gas from the Lo(wes)cal hardware chain, this auger took three pulls with the choke on to start the first time. Idled great once the choke was turned off. Ramped to speed quickly. The clutch engaged at an appropriate RPM. The auger bit, once spinning, dug the holes I needed to the depth I needed. It is VERY powerful and I could see soil like clay needing a helper to keep this from throwing you, but this is not as powerful as the high end commercial augers you might rent that really require two people. The next day, it started the same as the first, maybe slightly easier and worked perfectly. I am happy with the purchase and found the 8" auger to be perfect, but maybe a little more of a hole than I needed for 4" posts. ... show more
