Wow! I was not expecting much from this, but this is awesome! I was skeptical for a few reasons. First, it's a blend, and usually blends are a way for brewers to get rid of their old beans and mark them up like they're a premium product. Second, this is the most economical whole bean that I've ever seen anywhere. On a per pound basis, it's really only half of what you can get anywhere else. Third, I'd never heard of Coffee Bean Direct before. Well, this blew away my expectations. It's one of the tastier coffees that I've ever tasted. Granted, it's not the best coffee ever, but in the class of economy coffees, this one blows away all the other coffees in its class. These beans last for a long time, too. I repack mine into smaller Ziploc's, because five pounds is a lot of beans. We usually take about three months to drink 5 lbs of coffee, so this is the perfect size for us. Oh, the other reason to get this is if you get 1 lb bags at the store, a lot of times, they're only 10 or 12 ounces. So, if you're trying to get a good deal on coffee, then you should definitely try this, because it's a full 5 lbs. I also picked this because it's a medium roast. I started roasting my own beans a couple years ago, and I learned that unlike rum, the lighter the roast is generally better. The other thing that really surprised me was that beans taste way better about a month after they're roasted. Grinding is a different deal, though. In my opinion, the best coffee comes from freshly ground beans that were roasted 1-3 months ago. And, my shipment of beans were roasted about 1 month before I got them. There's quick turnaround on these, since they're such a hot item right now, so you can probably expect your beans to be just as fresh as mine were. Overall, you really should get this, especially if you're someone who values the best mix of quality and quantity.

I've seen some reviews that knock this coffee. Personally I think it tastes great. I'm not a coffee snob but I know what I like and I like this coffee. I use the Faberware Yosemite stove top percolator and I grind my own coffee. I find course ground coffee works best this way. You can use as much or as little as you want to taste. I don't find this coffee bitter at all. It isn't greasy and there is no jet fuel after taste. Just a nice rich hot cup of coffee. When I make this coffee you can smell it and the aroma is as good as the taste. This lasts for awhile so I bought one of those OXO air tight 5lb. containers to put it in and it will last for quite awhile. Enough for me to get through the 5lb. bag anyway. I don't see how you can go wrong with tis coffee. It may be the poor mans blend but it doesn't taste that way!

I bought a 5lb bag of the Poor Man's Blend - just made my first pot. I think this is a good, somewhat above average, coffee. Certainly worth the excellent price! It is not an exceptional cup, but I wouldn't expect that from any "blend". I drink a lot of coffee, at least one full 12 cup pot every day. I like it strong and I only drink it black, so no chance to cover up bad tastes. I find no bitterness or acidic taste to this coffee at all, and I even brewed this first pot a bit stronger than I usually do (based on the level of the beans in the grinder). The beans do not have a particularly strong or heady smell (somewhat disappointing), but they do have a fresh appearance, as opposed to some garbage brands that are bought several years old for pennies on the dollar. I am not a coffee connoisseur or "snob", but I certainly know what I like, and I offer the following information only to help any reader decide if my review might be meaningful to their specific tastes: First of all, I am frugal, probably even "cheap". I have found many excellent coffees over the years, but I just won't pay the usually stupid high prices to drink them every day., so I am always on the lookout for a new find at an excellent price. Coffees I generally find excellent include Blue Mountain, Jamaican, Ethiopian, and Honduran. I am not a particular fan of Kona beans, but most anything from Kauai is excellent. I prefer a dark roast, but I absolutely DETEST anything sold by Starjokes, and I will not drink that garbage even if it is free. Burnt dirt is NOT an acceptable flavor. No "flavored" coffee is ever acceptable - even the smell of them makes me gag.

We drink a lot of coffee so we were looking for a very cheap way to get a good cup of coffee. We happened upon this coffee a while back and thought we would give it a try. We figured out it is about 6.50 a pound, which is about as cheap as you can get and still get arabica beans. We brewed our first cup and were blown away. As of today we have ordered this item about 8 times. We have not had a bad batch. I know everyone's taste is different. We like the dark roast coffees. We prefer Starbuck's Verona or Sumatra. That is just to give you an idea where on the taste range this coffee is. You may have different results. It all depends on how you make your coffee. We drip brew. I grind the beans fresh, use cold, filtered water. Your results may vary. I would not hesitate to tell anyone to try this. After all, it is about 34 dollars. On subscribe and save it is about 32. Not a bad price by any means. If you drink it like we do, you will save a pretty penny and still be able to have all the coffee you want, plus great taste!

We really like the Poor Man's Blend, enough to put it on subscription. We also choose a substitute blend if the Poor Man's blend happened to be out of stock. Time for delivery rolls around. A message says it's out for delivery. Never arrives. New message, shipment delayed. OK. Things happen, no big deal. Days later, still no delivery and out of stock, understandable as it's quite tasty. Now, this may be my confusion, but I assumed that having a substitute from the same seller would mean that they would send me the substitute item without me having to ask them to do so should the preferred item be unavailable. They did not send the substitute but rather just decided I would be waiting the 2 months until next scheduled delivery date. I may purchase again in the future, I may not. But I will not bother putting the item on subscribe and save. It isn't that special.

Wow! is all I can say. This coffee is freshly roasted 24 hours before it is shipped, and pound for pound it is cheaper than Folgers, but tastes as good as artesian coffees. It is better than anything you will find at the grocery store. The coffee comes in a "stay fresh" bag, I store the beans for at least two months and they stay fresh. I love this coffee, I have been drinking it for more than 6 months. PROS: - Very smooth taste - Medium to dark roast, without tasting burnt or bitter, the beans are oily - Extremely fresh; after you open the bag, you can smell the coffee from 6 ft away - Potent, gourmet fresh roasted coffee - Beans come in a "stay fresh" bag, so you don't need a storage container CONS: - Not organic Country of Origin: Coffee beans come from Colombia and are roasted in the USA (New Jersey)

I am a Starbucks coffee kinda guy... there's just something in the way they roast their beans that gives the coffee a certain taste. Some people say it tastes burnt... but Hey... to each his own... This coffee intrigued me.. lots of beans for a lot less money.. had really good reviews... I'm all about a good deal. So... it's not Starbucks... but it does have good flavor and the beans had a nice glossy sheen and the right amount of oils of the beans.... a good sign... 95% of the coffee I make is cold brew. I use a simple wide mouth 1/2 gallon mason jar with a Country Line Kitchen Pour and Store lid and their fine mesh stainless steel cone style coffee filter -- a kit I bought from Amazon... I LOVE that kit. makes the best cold brew. Like I said, these Coffee beans had a nice amount of oils on them. After letting the coffee brew for 48 hours at room temp, all those awesome oils were floating on top. If you're tired of paying $8 - $9 for a 12 ounce bag of beans in the stores... these coffee beans are a really good alternative. I'll be buying again.
